DE Robert Rose (Official Thread)

Rose?s presence in middle a thorny issue for opposing linemen

Their newest starter has had a sneak preview of how the 2013 season will look for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats because every game he?s played for the Sudden Heroes has been on the road.

Defensive tackle Rob Rose, all 6-foot-5 and 285 pounds of him, didn?t sign with the Ticats until Oct. 18, and less than two weeks later was in the starting lineup in Regina. Five days after that, he got a taste of the Argos-Ticats rivalry in Toronto.

He?s one of the many successful results that emerged from Marcel Bellefeuille?s emphatic experiments with the lineup during the three-game lame-duck period to end the regular season. We?re assuming most of the vitriolic criticism of the Ticats coach has disappeared after almost every one of those moves paid off in the Montreal Marathon on Sunday.

During the live lab tests, the Ticats found out that what they thought Rose could do ? put pressure on the passing pocket from the inside, throw his long arms up to change the passing angle and help discourage the run dead up the middle ? he could actually do. So it became a priority to keep him in the lineup for the division semifinal, contributing to the widely condemned roster moves elsewhere.

Rose didn?t have any sacks or official tackles in the Montreal upset, but he kept pressure on the pocket, discouraged the Brandon Whitaker option at key times and also made one of the bigger, if subtle, plays of the entire season. When he pushed an Alouette guard into Calvillo, it caused a quacking pass that Jamall Johnson picked off for one of the most riveting moments of a long afternoon full of them.

The Cats found Rose at a free agent camp in Buffalo two years ago after he went undrafted out of Ohio State.

?We really liked him because he showed tremendous physical attributes,? says Ticats general manager Bob O?Billovich. ?He?s 290, 6-foot-5 and runs 4.65 (seconds) for the 40 and we?ve got a lot of players at skill positions that can?t run that fast, especially with that size.?

The native of Cleveland?s eastside Glenville neighbourhood eventually got a chance with the Seattle Seahawks and, when he was cut there, spent a year with the Miami Dolphins before they let him got on the final day of cuts two months ago. Like so many American players, he didn?t have a passport, and arrived at the border with only a birth certificate and a support letter from Shawn Burke, the Cats? director of football operations.

?At immigration, they Googled me,? Rose smiles, ?and, when it popped up that I did actually play football, there was no problem.?

The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced today they have signed import defensive tackle Robert Rose. As per club policy, financial details of the agreement were not released.

Rose (6?5? ? 285) joins the green and white after opening the 2012 season with the Hamilton Tiger Cats where he appeared in eight games registering seven tackles.

After spending four years at Ohio State, the Cleveland native originally signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks before being released and joining the Miami Dolphins practice roster for the 2010 season. The three-year pro joined the Tiger Cats late in the 2011 season, appearing in three games registering eight tackles and one quarterback sack.

Wasn't Rob Rose one of those people who had less than stellar things to say about OSU after he left? I may be just lumping him in with Ray Small.

I remember Rose as having academic trouble along with Ray Small, but I don't recall Rose having any unkind words about OSU. Small, yes, Small's dad, yes, but not Rose. Rival's ranked Rose as a 5 star recruit, number 1 DE coming out of high school, so relatively speaking, he was a bit of a disappointment.

One former Buckeye, defensive end Robert Rose, whose career ended in 2009, told SI that he had swapped memorabilia for tattoos and that "at least 20 others" on the team had done so as well. SI's investigation also uncovered allegations that Ohio State players had traded memorabilia for marijuana and that Tressel had potentially broken NCAA rules when he was a Buckeyes assistant coach in the mid-1980s.
