DE Robert Rose (Official Thread)

Small, Rose try to raise draft stock
Saturday, March 13, 2010

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The issues with Ray Small and Rob Rose have never been about athletic ability, and yesterday was a reminder of that.

They ended their Ohio State football career on a sour note, suspended from the Rose Bowl for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Both had earlier transgressions, as well, including academic struggles.

But yesterday was the school's pro day, when NFL teams show up to gauge whether any of OSU's departing players deserve to be paid professionals.

Rose and Small appeared to make a strong case for themselves.

Rose, a 290-pound defensive lineman, reported times of 4.76 or 4.79 seconds in the 40-yard dash. Small, a receiver and punt returner, said he heard times ranging from 4.42 to 4.5.

Rose said both realized that, with their checkered backgrounds, this was going to be a big day for them.

"Yeah, we had jitters," Rose said. "I spent the night over at (Small's) house last night. I couldn't sleep; he came to my room early this morning, wanted to talk to me about it.

"Coming in (to OSU), I would've thought that the door would've been bigger for me and Ray, because we were so highly recruited. But things happen - God has a plan for everybody."

Small said every team official he met with asked him about his off-field history.

"I'm not perfect," he said. "It's just that (because) I made a mistake before, that anytime I do make a mistake, it's more brighter than anybody else's mistake. I'm not perfect. I will make mistakes, but it won't be the same mistakes."

Rose and Small likely won't be drafted, but will hope to sign as free agents.

Small, Rose take part: Receiver Ray Small and defensive tackle Rob Rose, both of Cleveland Glenville High, participated. They were suspended from playing in the Rose Bowl because of team violations. Unofficially, Small was timed in one 40 in 4.42. Rose, 6-5 and 290, ran in the 4.8s.

Rob Rose ran an official 4.79 in his forty-yard dash weighing in at 295 pounds. After his off-field issues which saw him miss the Rose Bowl, he readily admitted that this was a very important day for him.

?This is a huge day,? he said. ?This is my combine. I was preparing very, very hard for it. I?ve been preparing ever since I couldn?t make the trip out to California. I?ve been working hard and it?s starting to pay off for me a little bit.?

He also said he was ?content? with his performance, but still feels he could have done better.

When talking about who looked good during the workouts, Rose was asked about Thaddeus Gibson. His response: "Thaddeus always looks good."

Oh, and because he's been watching his weight and working out for the last six weeks, Rose said he was going to Golden Corral afterwards to ?pig out?.

Rose-y future

Defensive lineman Robert Rose did not do anything to hurt his draft stock at Friday's workouts.

The beleaguered product of Glenville — who was suspended for the Rose Bowl — said he ran 4.76 and 4.79 in his two 40-yard dashes.

"I was pushing for 4.6," Rose said, "but 4.7s is still good for someone weighing 290 pounds."

Both Rose and receiver/kick returner Small — who reportedly ran a 4.42 on Friday — could be fighting reputation more than athletic skills in the upcoming draft. Each have talent — Ballard called them "freak athletes" — but each have had academic and off-field issues while at Ohio State.

"I know the questions are coming (about his past)," Rose said. "I'm just truthful. I made mistake. I have to be a man and live up to it."

Rob Rose (DE, 6-4 ?, 294) ran 4.77 and 4.74 in the 40-yard-dash, 4.44 in the short shuttle and 7.49 in the three-cone drill. Rose also recorded a 27.5 vertical jump, 9.2 broad jump and 24 reps on the bench.

Seattle Seahawks: Intriguing Undrafted Free Agent DT Rob Rose
April 27, 2010
@scottcushing

In response to a comment by reader, DHark, I sought out Ken Gordon, Ohio State beat writer for the Columbus Dispatch to find out some background info on Seahawks new undrafted free agent, DT Rob Rose. You can find Ken's work here and here.

If he had to boil down Rose's tenure at Ohio State he'd use this one: Inconsistent.

He as highly touted out of high school (Cleveland; Rivals.com 5 star, Scout.com 4 star) and earned playing time right away but suffered through two separate shoulder injures which eventually resulted in surgery.

He got back into the rotation in 2008 and became more of a regular in 2009 and showed ability at times and evidently is a strong guy (and evidently fast according to his 4.7 40s weighing 290+).

Apparently Rose had issues academically, before the season and all the way until the Rose Bowl before ultimately being held out of the Rose Bowl for other reasons which were not disclosed (the ever-popular for "violating team rules"). Speculation is just that, speculation, and you can read this for what he may have been held out of the game for. Take a wild guess.

So, he's a physically talented player who never showed much on the field or in the classroom, who didn't show the best judgment overall, but who is getting a chance with Seattle because of his potential.

Sounds like a perfect zero risk (as an undrafted free agent) high reward kind of guy.

Better late than never

The final member of the Seahawks? 2010 draft haul has finally made it to Virginia Mason Athletic Center.

Rob Rose, a defensive end from Ohio State who was signed as a rookie free agent, arrived in Seattle on Friday, worked out with the team today and will participate in Tuesday?s OTA.

Per NFL rules, a rookie cannot join his new team until his university?s academic year is completed. Ohio State?s spring quarter wrapped up on Thursday, allowing Rose to fly to Seattle on Friday. Two other Seahawks ? Earl Thomas and Walter Thurmond III ? missed one day of the team?s OTAs in May because their schools were in session when the OTAs began.

Link?

If so, I'm a bit disappointed and hope he gets picked up by someone. Always thought he was a great addition to our depth at DL. Excited to see where him and the other few Buckeyes, who were recently waived, go.

IMHO Rob never scratched the surface of his potential. What were his mensurables at the NFL combine? Nobody his size ran 40s underl 4.8. Based pretty much solely, on his combination of size and speed, Rob was (past thence), the #1 DE coming out of HS.

If God ever physically gifted anyone it was Rob Rose. I can only imagine what could have been had he really learned how to play the game. I would love it if the Browns picked him up for the practice squad.
