The Glenville-to-Ohio State pipeline will deliver another star player today when Tarblooders lineman Robert Rose makes his oral commitment to the Buckeyes public during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
"The decision wasn't hard, but keeping it to myself was tough," Rose said via cell phone from San Antonio in preparation for today's game. Rose will make his official announcement sometime during the 1 p.m. game, which will be shown on WKYC Ch. 3.
Rose visited OSU, Southern California, Tennessee and Michigan State. He also was interested in LSU, Florida and North Carolina.
"USC was tempting," Rose admitted. "When I visited, they were the defending national champions and the weather there is nice all year long. But I'm from Ohio and OSU is where I belong."
Rose, who plans to major in sports and leisure and play defensive end, said he knew he was going to be a Buckeye the moment OSU offered him a scholarship last February.
"It was tough not telling anyone," he said. "I kept saying, 'I don't know, I don't know,' whenever anybody asked me where I was going to play in college. But I wanted to experience the recruiting process and I'm glad I did. It was fun, interesting and I learned a lot."
The 6-6, 250-pounder registered 67 tackles, including 19 for losses, had 15 sacks and 13 deflected passes despite often being double- and triple-teamed in helping lead the Tarblooders to an unbeaten regular season, a ninth consecutive Senate Athletic League title and their sixth postseason appearance in seven seasons.
Ranked the 11th-best player in Ohio High Magazine's preseason edition, Rose earned All-Ohio Division I first-team honors and was named Defensive Player of the Year by The Plain Dealer.
Rose visited OSU with Glenville teammates Raymond Small and Bryant Browning.
So, are Small and Browning ready to join Rose and former Tarblooders Troy Smith, Ted Ginn Jr., Jamario O'Neal, Curtis Terry and Donte Whitner and extend the Buckeyes' pipeline even further?
"I don't know," Rose said.
