DE Nick Bosa (Pro Bowl, All Pro, 2019 ROY, 2022 DPOY, San Francisco 49ers)

URBAN MEYER, OHIO STATE EXPECTING IMMEDIATE IMPACT FROM FRESHMAN NICK BOSA

A No. 97 jersey with the last name Bosa stitched across the back will be worn inside Ohio Stadium again this fall. It’s just not going to be donned by the same person Ohio State fans are accustomed to seeing.

Nick Bosa is the one carrying on his family’s name, taking over for older brother Joey, who left early for the NFL Draft following the 2015 season after becoming one of the best defensive players in school history. Joey was selected third overall by the San Diego Chargers — the first of five first-round picks from the Buckeyes' 2015 team.

The comparisons between the two Bosa brothers will be there, of course, and perhaps they’re warranted.

“He’s pretty much just like Joey is,” Ohio State senior center Pat Elflein said of the younger Bosa. “Walks, talks, acts like him.”

Fair or unfair, on-field expectations will be there, as well. Nick Bosa will almost always be compared to his older brother. And as Joey Bosa recorded 26 career sacks and 51 tackles for loss, that’s a lot of pressure for someone to come in and match those numbers.

Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer says he doesn’t see that pressure as an issue yet, however.

“I’ve been with him a lot during the summer, the last three weeks, and I don’t feel it,” Meyer said. “I’m very appreciative of him, Mickey Marotti is with him every day. Non-issue.”

Urban Meyer Not Interested in Being Patient with Nick Bosa?

BosaFamilyUrban.jpg

This summer Urban Meyer sent out a group text to Nick and Joey Bosa and their parents to give them an update on how things were going with Nick. He happily told them how well Nick was performing in workouts and the like. He simply wanted to provide the family with an update on how things were going for the young freshman and give some words of encouragement for all involved.

Joey fired back a response. "Be patient."

Meyer took his phone and typed out a terse two-letter answer.

"No."

"His dad got a kick out of that," Meyer said. "No patience."

Truthfully, however, the Buckeyes are going to be as patient as they need to be with the rookie from Fort Lauderdale who has been making his way back from a torn ACL.

Even though Meyer said last week that Bosa was "ready to go", they are still going to keep him on a "pitch count". They won't overwork him. Every rep will be counted and they will see where he stands along the way. If he needs a break here or there, he'll get it. The important part is having him at full strength and ready to go when the whistles count.

Meyer doesn't want to be patient, but the possibilities are too good to rush. Nick Bosa, like his brother, comes to Ohio State as a 5-star All-American defensive end who could have gone anywhere in the country. And after what Joey did as a Buckeye, the excitement meter at Ohio State hasn't been out of the red since Nick arrived.

"Can’t wait," Meyer said. "Larry Johnson is the one that I’ve got to calm down. He’s much more mature than Joey was when we first got him. I still don’t know if we have that yet. I’ll see pretty soon. His maturity level and ability to communicate, he’s a very mature person."

Ohio State Expects Nick Bosa to Hit 'Ground Running' Next Week

When freshman defensive end Nick Bosa arrived on Ohio State's campus this summer, he did so ahead of schedule as it concerns his recovery from a torn ACL last year.

But just because he was ahead of the doctor's schedule didn't mean that Urban Meyer and defensive line coach Larry Johnson were going to let him go full bore from the outset of camp.

The Buckeyes have kept a "pitch count" on Bosa. Every rep at every practice has been watched and counted, and when he has reached his predetermined limit, he gets shut down. That number has grown each week of fall practice, and it has all been done with the idea that he will be full go and ready for the season opener against Bowling Green.

"We’re still monitoring him a little bit," Johnson said this week. "I’ve got a head count in my mind what I want him to do in practice every day and when I get to that number I shut him down. As we go through the week I increase that number, but right now I’m trying really to keep him ready and get him ready for next week."

And will he be ready next week?

"Oh, no question about it," Johnson said.

Once Bosa is out on the field it will be impossible to refrain from drawing conclusions to his older brother Joey. Nick is playing the same position and wearing the same number. If you squint only a little, you might not see a difference.

"If you stand behind (Nick) they look the same," Johnson said. "Same jersey, same number, the body mechanics looks the same. But once they turn around and once the ball is snapped, they’re both different athletes."

Larry Johnson Not Surprised by Nick Bosa's Performance

NickBosaSack.jpg

Not all beginnings have to be humble.

Joey Bosa had one tackle in his Buckeye debut, and it happened in the fourth quarter of Ohio State's 40-20 win over Buffalo in 2013. It was a simple tackle of Buffalo running back Brandon Oliver on a 6-yard gain. So, yeah, that was pretty humble, all things considered.

Younger brother Nick Bosa, on the other hand, was one of seven Buckeyes to have a team-high four tackles this past Saturday. He was also the only Buckeye to notch a full quarterback sack.

His first tackle took place in the third quarter and went for no gain. His next tackle was a 13-yard loss. His third tackle was a stop on a 2-yard gain, and his fourth was a stop on a 4-yard gain. Not bad for a freshman who played just 22 plays on the day.

"Very poised," is how defensive line coach Larry Johnson described his rookie. "I was not surprised, but we have talked about him not going into a game trying to chase anything. Not chase a sack or a tackle, just go into a game and play fast, and when you do that, great things will happen for you. And I think he bought into that. I was really impressed how he played for 22 plays. Now we’ll continue to grow him as a player."

For now Johnson likes the number of reps that Bosa is receiving. He'd like him in the 22-25 range until Big Ten play starts, and then they'll raise those numbers. The focus now is making sure he is totally recovered from his ACL injury last year and that he actually has some success when he is on the field.

Johnson is watching Bosa closely because he wants him to experience success through his own hard work and merits. While some might wonder if he is trying to live up to his brother's accomplishments or what other people think he should be, Johnson said that kind of stuff just isn't in the picture.

"I’ll be honest with you, I don’t think he’s worried about his brother," he said. "I don’t think he’s worried about what people are saying. I think he wants to be a really good football player. In our conversations, that’s what we talk about. ‘How can I be a good football player?’ That’s all he wants to be. So I don’t think he’s chasing anything or worrying about the pressure. He just wants to play football and that’s the thing I like about him."

Nick Bosa registers his first sack as a Buckeye. Needs to work on his shrug, though.

1. The injury to Sprinkle makes this moot.

2. The truth in today's recruiting world is that you'll only have a Bosa for three years so there's no point in signing him up to sit. The same applies to redshirt.

He never was going to RS. I thought he would beat out Tracy. Now that isn't necessary. He just needs to beat out DJ and DH which is certainly do-able. In fact the coaches taking it slow on increasing his minutes will be the only factor. Also, I will add that it doesn't matter, per se, who starts as the staff will heavily rotate. Small Bear could be first in the rotation and still log the same or more minutes than a starter. JH is in a similar situation.
