DE Nick Bosa (Pro Bowl, All Pro, 2019 ROY, 2022 DPOY, San Francisco 49ers)

Ahead of Schedule with Rehab, Coaches Eager for Nick Bosa's Arrival

For some people, expectations are a burden, weighing them down and creating a sense of perpetual fatigue. For others, expectations are simply a path showing them the direction in which they know they need to go.

For incoming Ohio State freshman Nick Bosa, expectations have been a way of life, just as they were for his older brother Joey. There is no newness to having people place expectations on either of them, because it's all they've ever known

And when it is all you've ever known, it doesn't have to be a burden if you can turn it into a strength.

Joey Bosa came to Ohio State with the expectation that he would be productive, and relatively quickly. In his first camp, defensive line coach Mike Vrabel made it abundantly clear to Bosa that he was no longer the 5-star hotshot that he recruited.

"This isn't St. Thomas Aquinas," Vrabel would shout during practice.

Even though it definitely wasn't Bosa's old high school stomping grounds of St. Thomas Aquinas, he did end up starting by week three, and ended up starting in 10 of the Buckeyes' 14 games in 2013.

A freshman performance like that is unfair to expect from Nick Bosa, but that doesn't mean there won't be similar presumptions for him.

While his coaches would never put a number on what they expect from Nick Bosa, they certainly aren't shying away from talking about their beliefs in his immediate future.

"Nick Bosa is an automatic," Urban Meyer said back on signing day.

"Nick is a mature kid that I don't think will bat an eye coming in whether he wears the number 97, whether he looks like Joey or walks like Joey," defensive coordinator Luke Fickell said on signing day. "The reality is he's Nick. He's grown up with it his whole life. Went to St. Thomas Aquinas and followed his brother and had a successful career. I don't think anything on the mental pressure side would affect him."

Not to be all negative, but given the clear height differences between the two, it seems like Bosa the Younger will have a more John Simon-esque career trajectory to look forward to.
I think the Louisville DE got drafted yesterday, and he's something like 6'1" (if that) and 300+. I think folks need to quit harping on the 1- or 2-inch height difference between Joey and Nick.

It's not like John Simon type career is bad. Dude was a boss. Perhaps folks should not project so much on a kid who hasn't set foot on campus.

Not saying Simon's career was bad. Point is that folks are already pigeon-holing him into a position other than what's he's playing just because he's and inch or two shorter than his brother.

Uhh, I don't know if you know much about the position, but it's actually important/useful. And projecting him as Simon would still be dominant. Just not in the same way as Joey. But way to go all in there Mili.
I'll choose to wait until Nick gets here before determining that he can't be as dominant at DE as his brother. But, you go ahead and call Meyer and his staff to let them know of the blatant difference in body type between the two so they don't end up making the heinous mistake of playing him at DE where he's clearly built for DT...
