DE Mike Vrabel (All B1G, All American, Pro Bowl, All Pro, Super Bowl Champion)

Vrabel case expected to be resolved favorably
The National Football Post Apr 6

The felony theft case against Kansas City Chiefs veteran linebaker Mike Vrabel(notes) isn't expected to amount to much legally.

Vrabel allegedy took eight bottles of beer from an Indiana casino deli and was arrested earlier this week.

And the case is expected to eventually be resolved favorably for the NFL player without any jail time or heavy fines. It's possible, if not probable, that the case might not be pursued altogether in the court system.

Under Indiana law, the theft of anything no matter how valuable is treated as a Class D felony. The charge carries a sentence of between six months and three years in prison.

He's free on $600 bail. If convicted, he could be sentenced to six months to three years in jail.

"It was an unfortunate misunderstanding, and I take full responsibility for the miscommunication," Vrabel said in a statement e-mailed to National Football Post from his agent, Neil Cornrich. "I feel comfortable that after talking with the appropriate parties, we will resolve this matter."

Indiana Gaming Commission Director of Enforcement Kenny Rowan told KMBC News that Vrabel was cooperative during the arrest.

"We understand that Mike has communicated publicly that the matter is a misunderstanding for which he takes full responsibility," the Chiefs said in an unattributed statement. "We hope it is resolved for Mike in a positive way."

I like Vrabel and am glad to see this was just a misunderstanding. Hopefully it's resolved without much more legal issues. Dude helped Brady win three Superbowls, what's not to love about this former buckeye. Not to mention he's always been a class act.

Vrabel talks about his future

I haven?t had a chance to speak with linebacker Mike Vrabel about his playing future since his recent arrest in Indiana. But I don?t think that the incident will impact his decision whether or not to play again next season or the Chiefs? interest in wanting him back.

But I did speak with him on that subject shortly before his arrest and he indicated he would like to play a 15th NFL season. Vrabel turns 36 in August.

''I would certainly hope so. I really do,'' he said. ''But I also have to find out realistically if anybody is interested. It does me no good to say I want to play if nobody is interested. It does me no good to say I don?t want to play if somebody is interested. Maybe I?m approaching this the wrong way but that?s been kind of helpful to me the last couple of months.

''I?ve still continued to work out. We probably need to get (the labor situation) resolved and if something presents itself, I will look at it long and hard.''

About Waters and Vrabel

It?s interesting to note the Chiefs drafted an interior offensive lineman (Rodney Hudson in the second round) and an outside linebacker (Justin Houston) in the third while their two players most active in the labor squabble are an interior offensive lineman (Brian Waters) and an outside linebacker (Mike Vrabel).

Only a cynic more hardened than me can see revenge in the Chiefs motives here. Waters and Vrabel are near if not at the end of their careers and the Chiefs would have made huge mistakes had they not drafted at those positions.

At any rate, I asked Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt before the draft about the standing of Waters and Vrabel with the organization and here?s what he said: ?Those are two guys I think very highly of, not only as football players but as human beings. They have both been active in the union for many years. Right now, we?re on different sides of this agreement. But I?m looking forward to us getting this behind us and continuing to have them as part of the Chiefs family.??

As for Vrabel, he will be 36 this summer and has no contract for 2011. Previously, I posted right here his thoughts on returning to play another season. That comment came before his recent arrest in Indiana for theft, but the arrest and its aftermath shouldn?t be much of a factor in his decision.

The Chiefs have Houston, Andy Studebaker and Cameron Sheffield at outside linebacker with Tamba Hali as their franchise player, assuming that designation holds up whenever the NFL resumes its business. So even though it?s getting crowded at those positions, I suspect Vrabel will have a spot on the roster as long as he wants one because of his leadership ability.

The bigger issue is whether Vrabel would want to stick around in a much smaller role.

2010 Chiefs: What the Film Revealed
By ANDY BENOIT

While we wonder whether there will be a 2011 season, this is part of a series looking back at the 2010 season, with the benefit of film analysis. This is the final installment of the series.

Myth Buster

Mike Vrabel is too old

The 14-year veteran turns 36 this August, but in 2010 he looked like a man barely over 30. Vrabel can still hold the edge against the run, and he?s fantastic at working off blocks and collapsing into traffic. His pass-rushing prowess has declined a bit, but not enough to make coaches feel obligated to always take him off the field on third down.

Former Buckeyes believe success will continue at Ohio State
Despite last week's resignation of Jim Tressel, Ohio State product Mike Vrabel and others believe good times are ahead for the Buckeyes.

(Columbus) - Jim Tressel's sudden resignation sent shock-waves through Buckeye Nation. A week later, some of those who played and coached for the Scarlet and Gray believe Ohio State football will continue to dominate, despite potential NCAA sanctions.

"I know good times are ahead for Ohio State," former Buckeye Mike Vrabel of the Kansas City Chiefs said. "There's still a lot to be positive (about), not only with the players, but the coach that's going to be leading them has been ready to do this for quite a while."

Vrabel, who finished his Buckeye career in 1996, played on the Ohio State defensive line with interim Ohio State head coach Luke Fickell.

"The (players) are ready and the summer will be important," Vrabel said. "It'll be great for them to condition and work knowing they have a leader in place. Someone they know is going to be there and can lead them into the future."

Vrabel Not Ready for New Career
Former Buckeye Unlikely to Fill Current Coaching Vacancy
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Mike Vrabel would love to be a football coach some day.

When that day comes, there is nowhere on earth he would rather coach than the Ohio State University, where he was a star defensive player for the Buckeyes in the mid-1990?s.

The recent shakeup in Columbus has left interim head coach Luke Fickell with a vacancy on his coaching staff, but it doesn?t sound like Vrabel is ready to give up his spot on the field for a view from the sideline, even for a former teammate and the best man in his wedding.

?No, Luke hasn?t said he wants me on his staff,? Vrabel said after showing up to support Fickell during his introductory press conference at Ohio State.

?Luke knows I still have time to play, and I?m traveling to Chicago or New York for meetings with the owners. Luke knows I?ve got a bunch on my plate right now.?

Pair of Former Buckeyes Have Faith In Fickell
Bobby Carpenter and Mike Vrabel give Fickel vote of confidence
By Tony Gerdeman

Crammed to the gills with media, faculty, coaches, and various other onlookers as Luke Fickell was introduced as Ohio State's 23rd head coach on Monday, in the back of the room there were two former Buckeyes who had hoped that they would one day get to see Fickell land his dream job.

Mike Vrabel, who was a linemate of Fickell's for three seasons, and Bobby Carpenter, who played under Fickell as a junior and senior, were both in attendance to lend their support and to see that dream realized.

Vrabel says Ohio State hasn?t called about coaching job yet
Posted by Evan Silva on June 17, 2011

Linebacker Mike Vrabel went sack-less in 16 starts last year, turns 36 before this season, and will be an unrestricted free agent once the lockout is lifted. There has been speculation that Vrabel wants to be a football coach, but that opportunity hasn?t come from his alma mater just yet.

?No, [Ohio State coach] Luke [Fickell] hasn?t said he wants me on his staff,? said Vrabel after Fickell?s introductory press conference. ?Luke knows I still have time to play, and I?m traveling to Chicago or New York for meetings with the owners. Luke knows I?ve got a bunch on my plate right now.?

Vrabel has been active in labor negotiations between the owners and players. He does want to coach someday, though, and it ideally it would be for the Buckeyes.

?I think it?s certainly something I?d be interested in under the right situation,? Vrabel confirmed. ?I?d have to look and see when my playing career comes to an end and my involvement with the players association and being on the executive committee and being in that role.?

Vrabel indicated that he still has designs on playing in the NFL.

?My contract is up with the Chiefs,? he said, ?So I?ll be looking for a job as soon as this lockout ends.?

Ten most disappointing oversights
The players and coaches whom teams never should have given up on
By Brian McIntyre
Football Outsiders

9. Mike Vrabel, LB, Pittsburgh Steelers

Drafted by the Steelers out of Ohio State in the third round of the 1997 NFL draft, Vrabel spent his first four seasons in the league as a backup to Jason Gildon, Carlos Emmons and Joey Porter before the New England Patriots signed him as a free agent in 2001. Although he would be named to just one Pro Bowl and All-Pro team during his time with the Patriots, Vrabel became an instant starter and vital cog of the defense, totaling more than 600 tackles, 48 quarterback sacks and all 11 of his career interceptions during eight seasons in New England. The Patriots named him to their 50th-anniversary team in 2010, five months after they had traded the 6-foot-4, 261-pounder to the Kansas City Chiefs. During his stints with New England and Kansas City, Vrabel also has flashed his versatility as a goal-line tight end, catching 12 touchdown passes in the past 10 seasons, including a pair of touchdown grabs in Super Bowls.
