Sarah Wilson took a break from entertaining guests in her home during the weekend to ponder life as the parent of a highly sought college football prospect.
"It’s been kind of surreal, really," she said.
Her son, Lawrence Wilson, is a defensive end from Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary. Ohio State wants him. So do Michigan, Florida and Pittsburgh.
And so does Notre Dame. She found that out big time on Sunday night. Her son was still at basketball practice — he plays for the same school that produced LeBron James — when she and her husband answered the door.
"We were expecting some coaches from Notre Dame," she said.
How many showed up?
"Seven," she said, laughing. "We weren’t expecting that many."
Her husband entertained the coaches in the living room as they watched the New England Patriots beat the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL playoffs. And occasionally they caught a glimpse of Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, who in December was named head coach at Notre Dame.
"This has all been very, very interesting," Sarah Wilson said.
Adding to the excitement is her son’s current undeclared status. With national letter of intent signing day just 15 days from now, major-college teams are trying to hang on to the commitments they have gained while also trying to reach their quotas. Lawrence Wilson hasn’t made a commitment yet, but he’s extremely interested in Ohio State.
And vice versa, it seems. The Buckeyes have 15 commitments toward a class that might number as many as 20 on signing day.
They’re also still courting running back Jason Gwaltney of North Babylon, N.Y. He said he will announce his choice between OSU and Southern California on Wednesday.
OSU coaches also await word from Youngstown Ursuline two-way standout Kyle McCarthy, a late-bloomer who also is being courted by Notre Dame and Navy; linebacker Tavares Kearney of Atlanta, who seems to be down to OSU and South Carolina; and defensive lineman Walker Ashley of Eden Prairie, Minn., who won’t announce until signing day whether it will be OSU, USC, Oklahoma, Minnesota or Penn State.
The key for all, Sarah Wilson said, is to enjoy the moment.
"I’m glad for my son because this is giving him some options in life," she said. "And we have met some really wonderful people during this."
All she wants her son to consider is "going someplace where he will get a good education, and the schools he’s looking at will give him that," she said. "Second, where is he going to be happy? He has to be comfortable with the coaches, the players and the school."
As for a mother getting comfortable with coaches, Notre Dame offered her a crash course Sunday night.
