Ohio DE Lawrence Wilson

Who says Coach Weis doesn't have time to do it all?

Lawrence Wilson's father told me that Coach Weis is coming Saturday morning for an in home visit.

Are they still interested in Notre Dame?

"Yeah, I think, yeah," Wilson's father told me. "I only talked to him a couple minutes, but I watched the press conference and I'm definitely interested."

I'll have the full interview in Friday's edition of IRISH TODAY.

I took some insurance classes with Lawrence Wilson's Aunt (or something like that)about a month and a half ago. She was telling me that he just absolutely loves Notre Dame. He loves the school grounds and everthing about the place. According to her nobody else ever was really in the running, that he was just letting the recruiting process run its course before he made his intentions known. If what she said is true then I doubt he goes anywhere else. However, she could be wrong.

Rivals premium

He is down to four schools- Florida, tOSU, scUM and ND. He has told all other schools to stop calling.

Florida- Urban hired a ND assitant coach who is helping in Wilson's recruitment. Lawrence also likes Urban Meyer.

tOSU- He says they are in the lead and talks to tOSU coaches all the time. JT was at his BBall game last Friday.

scUM- He is not sure where they fit on his list of favorites.

ND- He likes where Coach Weiss is coming from. Weiss has an in-home with Wilson on Sat..

Good point, SCB. But is it by school or by coach? If a coach gets fired, can his replacement do an in-home?

Anybody know?

Has to be by school, else a school could rotate each one of their coaches to a kid's house, giving that school as many as 10 or more in-home visits.

The NCAA bylaw limits the head coach to one off-campus (in-home) visit. As this limitation (and others) applies to an insitution's staff, it does not matter who the head coach is. One visit by a head coach per school, period.

I am not sure whether this is premium or not, but this article implies that Willingham had not made an in-home wit Wilson. The article talks about the contact period (which ends tomorrow, I believe) and states that Wilson was scheduled to have an in-home with a ND assistant. No mention of Ty making a visit.

Tressel puts OSU in lead

Buckeye coach's visit to basketball game impresses St. V-M two-sport star Wilson

By Darnell Mayberry
Beacon Journal staff writer

Lawrence Wilson indulged in his favorite part of recruiting Friday night -- the attention.

Wilson was graced with Ohio State coach Jim Tressel's presence for St. Vincent-St. Mary's 70-50 win over Lakewood St. Edward.

Wilson, who had orally committed to Notre Dame, recanted his commitment when the Irish fired Tyrone Willingham as head coach.

``I was very disappointed,'' Wilson said. ``I felt like I could talk to him. I really trusted him and his staff.''

Now, Ohio State is the leading school. Tressel's visit only solidified that.

``It means a lot,'' Wilson said of Tressel's appearance. ``They tell you on the phone how much they want you, but he actually came and talked to me and watched my game. That means a whole lot.''

Tressel, who by NCAA rules was not allowed to talk to Wilson until after the game and can't comment directly on Wilson, walked through St. V-M's doors just before halftime of the junior-varsity game. Tressel sat with Wilson's parents, Eugene and Sarah, throughout Wilson's game. The quartet was scheduled to ``grab a cup of coffee'' after the game, Eugene said.

Tressel couldn't comment on the circumstances leading to the Buckeyes getting back into what is becoming the ``Lawrence Wilson Sweepstakes.''

``All I can do is acknowledge that we're recruiting him,'' Tressel said. ``Yes, we are interested in him.''

Tressel couldn't discuss his conversations with Wilson, but said he tries to sell to all recruits Ohio State as a quality institution, the opportunity to play and proximity for in-state prospects.

Tressel's visit comes just before the NCAA cutoff for its ``dead period'' during recruiting from Dec. 19 through Jan. 2, when recruiters can't visit or bring in a prospective student-athlete. Tressel's arrival didn't conflict with the Buckeyes preparing for Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29. The team finished practicing Friday at noon and will be off until the 21st before leaving for San Antonio on Dec. 22.

Wilson said his top three choices are now Ohio State, Michigan and Florida, which recently hired former Utah coach Urban Meyer. New England Patriots offense coordinator Charlie Weis, who was named Notre Dame's new coach on Monday, is scheduled to fly in from New England today to see Wilson. Wilson said the Irish still have a chance.

But the Buckeyes are far and away the favorite.

``Ohio State, they've been there since the beginning,'' said Wilson, whose brother, Eugene III, is currently enrolled at Ohio State. ``I really like Ohio State, and I really like coach Tressel.''

Wilson and his parent did say that they would keep an open mind when Weis visits today. All three were impressed with Weis' dedication to charter a flight, then return to New England to finish preparing for the Patriots' game against the Miami Dolphins on Monday night.

``You've got to stop and pay attention to what he's saying,'' Eugene said.

Weis e-mailed the Wilsons soon after he was introduced as coach on Monday morning, Sarah said. She added that Weis said he looked forward to talking to the family and that Wilson was ``a very high priority.''

St. Vincent-St. Mary proved that it is a little in front of St. Edward on Friday when it pulled away in the final quarter and coasted to a 70-50 victory in front of a crowd of about 1,000 that included Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and former Irish star LeBron James.

Tressel was on hand to visit with SVSM forward Lawrence Wilson, who also plays defensive end and tight end on the football team and recently said he may change his mind about the verbal commitment he made to attend Notre Dame because the school fired coach Tyrone Willingham.

Wilson, a 6-6 forward, scored 12 points and had nine rebounds in slightly more than 21 minutes. He scored six points and had three rebounds in the final eight minutes.
