Ohio State Defensive End Kenyatta Jackson Jr. Available Against Illinois

Ohio State should again have its full complement of starters when it faces Illinois on the road Saturday.

Starting defensive end Kenyatta Jackson Jr. will return for Ohio State after suffering an upper-body stinger against Minnesota last week, Ryan Day confirmed at the Buckeyes' hotel arrival on Friday.

“Kenyatta's here, so he'll be available and ready to roll,” Day told reporters.

Just sayin': GREAT NEWS!!!

If, as reported, it was a stinger, they may hold him out this week, too. I’ve had more of these of varying severity than I want to remember and the problem is that if not given sufficient time to recover, they can become chronic.
Any Ohio State fan old enough hears stinger and thinks of one guy.

Kenyatta Jackson Jr. Playing Team-First Role in Ohio State’s Defense But Eager to “Use My Pass-Rush Moves” More

Kenyatta Jackson Jr. is eager for more opportunities to put his pass-rushing skill on display.

The redshirt junior defensive end’s primary role this season has been to “cage the pocket,” meaning he’s been responsible for not allowing quarterbacks to get outside of the pocket and extend plays with their feet. He’s done a great job playing that role, helping lead the way up front for an Ohio State defense that leads the nation with just 6.8 points allowed per game this season.

But Jackson, who was hyped up by his teammates as a potential first-round pick entering the season, hasn’t had a lot of production as a pass-rusher, recording just 1.5 sacks in Ohio State’s first six games. As such, he’s told Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia that he’d like more chances to “use my pass-rush moves.”

“I'm doing things that I wouldn't say I don't like, but sacrificing for the team. I'm a team player first, so I think my year is going well, but I would like to do other things,” Jackson told reporters on Wednesday. “I talked to Coach P about that, and he's open to it.”

I thought last year that on occasion, Kenyatta didn’t set the edge properly. His performance against Washington was excellent in that regard, and it was more important to cage Williams than to rush hard trying to sack him.

As others have pointed out, that will also be important against Underwood. As well as when UCLA comes to town.
