DE "Captain Jack" Sawyer (All B1G, All-American, Buckeye Legend Forever, National Champion)

I was gutted after the TCUN game because these kids came back and sacrificed only to see that game coached so badly and their goals slip away.

When we remember this team and Sawyer especially, it seems like that memory should rest first and foremost on their calling Ryan Day into a team meeting and helping him make the final transition to head coach.

I'LL TAKE THE LOT. In hot pursuit of #content to end the Skull Session, I stumbled across an Etsy page called CodeyDraws.

What does Codey draw?

Well, lots of stuff...

... including, but not limited to, Jack Sawyer's scoop-and-score in the Cotton Bowl and Smith's 56-yard catch in the national championship game.

Check this out:

5 Potential Round 1 Draft Picks Gone Under Every NFL Team’s Radar ft. Dillon Gabriel

Alright, picture this. The NFL Draft is in full swing, fans are screaming, cameras are zooming in on prospects, and Roger Goodell’s up there shaking hands like he’s running for office. But while the big names are getting their flowers, there’s always that one star sitting in the green room, waiting… and waiting… and waiting. Some guys get hyped to the moon, others? Straight-up slept on. Happened to Lamar Jackson, and happens every year. But let us put you on the game—there are a handful of dawgs like Dillon Gabriel in this draft who ain’t getting the love they deserve, and some teams are about to get a STEAL when they pull the trigger. Here we go:

3. Jack Sawyer (DE/EDGE, Ohio State)

Jack Sawyer is the hometown hero who turned his childhood dream into reality. A five-star recruit from Pickerington, Ohio, he took the slow-burn route to stardom at Ohio State. And in 2024, everything finally clicked. His senior season was a masterclass—9 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and a Cotton Bowl performance for the ages. He strip-sacked Quinn Ewers and took the fumble 83 yards to the house, sending Ohio State to the national championship game. That’s the type of play that sticks in NFL scouts’ heads. Some consider him a 1st round pick, but anything can happen in the draft night.

Sawyer ain’t the flashiest pass rusher in this class, but his power game is filthy. He doesn’t just rely on raw athleticism—his hand usage, counter moves, and ability to convert speed to power are all NFL-ready. His bull rush is lethal, and his play recognition against the run is excellent. Pro Football Focus graded him as one of the best run-defending edges in the country, which is a big reason why he’s a safe bet for early playing time.

Just sayin': I've seen him listed as late 1st rounder in some mock drafts.

Jack Sawyer reveals he will root for Jim Knowles' success at Penn State

“I think he’s bringing the smarts,” Sawyer said. “Obviously, he’s done it now at the highest level, won a national championship with us, and helped us get to where we want to go. I know he’s going to do the best he can at Penn State. Obviously, I’ll still always root for Ohio State but I will definitely root for Coach Knowles and his success because he’s been a huge part of our journies.

“Great guy, great guy to play for. He’s always going to be my DC so wish him nothing but the best. But that one game, every year, I’m rooting for the Buckeyes. Look forward to seeing that matchup.”

Jack Sawyer calls out 'unfair s***' Ryan Day had said about him at Ohio State

“Coach Day is one of the toughest, most resilient guys I’ve ever been around,” Jack Sawyer said. “That’s the reason why we all love him. It’s the reason I love him so much. No matter what’s going on, no matter all the unfair s*** that’s being said about him — excuse me for cussing — but he’s going to stand in there, stand strong, and take it all on the brunt. Take it head on for us, and take all the blame even if it’s wrongfully deserved.”

“So, playing for him and seeing the way he’s responded the last few years, especially this year, it just shows everyone across the country what he’s capable of. He’s the best head coach in the country by far, I think in college football, unbiasedly. So, being able to see us have that happen, hear all the things that we heard in Columbus,” Sawyer said.

“And him and his family go through the things that they went through and come out the backside of it, win a national championship, man, it meant the world to me. It meant the world to us and to him and his family. So, Coach Day is one of the toughest guys I’ve been around. That’s one of the biggest things that stands out to me.”

Jack Sawyer calls out 'unfair s***' Ryan Day had said about him at Ohio State

This statement seems completely inaccurate when I read what Sawyer said. It reads like Ryan Day was being unfair to Sawyer.

Jack Sawyer calls out 'unfair s***' about Ryan Day others had said about him at Ohio State

Still a poor sentence, but now it makes sense.
Original headline, lazy or click bait? You decide.

Great play, one of the all-time Buckeye best. Also think a shout-out needs to be given to Sonny Styles. On Sawyer's 'TD run', Sonny kept a Texas defender (WR? RB?), from catching Sawyer from behind. Sonny blocked the poor guy out from making a TD saving tackle. Do believe that Sonny should have gotten a couple extra Buckeye leafs (leaves?) for his play.....
