DC Matt Patricia (Official Thread)

The safeties are a problem. Downs isn't there anymore to fix everyone else's mistakes so every mistake now is huge. Zone is still a big problem. Guys are guarding grass instead of people. The spot behind the LBs is an enormous achilles heal that even Texas was exploiting game one but Arch was terrible.

This guy has been amazing and maybe it was personnel doing most of it but I think he's earned a pass so far. The tackling and effort was not a good look at all last night so he needs a leader out there to step it up. I think I saw Matthews Jr finally get pissed off enough to become that, hopefully.

If they make mistakes, fine, do it 100mph then learn from it. Guys still looking lost though this late in the season is scary though. Hopefully Timmons comes back this week but the vets have to play a lot better.

I have to assume the pathetic 3 man rush is because we don't have anybody outside of Kenyatta that can even get to the QB.....and even he doesn't do it often.
Well he does have a reaaally sticky jersey though apparently so. What happened to the pup who was a pass rush specialist early on tearing it up? Wilder what happened to him?

And the 3 man rush is the worst possible front. Several times last night they either knew it was coming or checked the play and gashed the hell out of us with a run. Our Defenses have always been better when we attack and dictate. Sometimes aggressiveness gets caught, sure, but the passive thing for us seems to get torched more often than not.

Predictability seems to go hand in hand with poor red zone performance, shitty OLine, and Ryan Day.

Our team hasn't know how to play zone for what feels like over a decade. So many times we have 2 or 3 guys just standing around a receiver and no one undercuts the throw at all or even tries to break up the pass most of the time

Another thing I've been stumped on all season is why we don't stunt or twist with the athletes we have? It's straight bull rush and I dint want to hazard a percentage guess but it is almost every time.

I would think, in my amateur assessment is, if you aren't Chase Young, a Bosa or Myles Garrett, would you not try to use every move in the book to get the job done? Now I know for an absolute fact that LJ has taught hand techniques for a long time yet I'm not seeing it.

Obviously after a loss we question everything but these are things people are noticing in good times and bad. Maybe there actually is a strategy in place dictating this I just haven't heard it.

This defense runs a fair amount of picks on pressures. The downside with stunts on early downs, especially with a defense already struggling with their triggers & fits, is that if you're not highly disciplined you can get caught with voided gaps.
