DC Matt Patricia (Official Thread)

SILVER BULLETS → SILVER BULLETING. Here’s an incredible stat from Reddit user potterpockets, who shared over the weekend that even if Ohio State’s opponents were able to roll over the points previous teams scored against the Buckeyes in 2025, Ohio State would still be 5-0.
  • Ohio State beats Texas, 14-7 → 14-7
  • Ohio State beats Grambling State 70-0 → 70-7
  • Ohio State beats Ohio 37-9 → 37-16
  • Ohio State beats Washington 24-6 → 24-22 (this one was close!)
  • Ohio State beats Minnesota 42-3 → 42-25
Matt Patricia’s defense is hilariously good.

I think it was Ross Fulton (cant remember 100% who it was) used to say Ohio State's defensive strategy is always pretty simple. You know what we're going to do but we have better players. And it'd be interesting to see what happened if they combined complex schemes with those players.
The trade-off was always allowing the players to play faster by not thinking as much in a simpler scheme vs a complex scheme that slows down their reaction time and possibly leads to blown assignments. Patricia has done an excellent job of teaching them so we're seeing the best of both options

Nine months into his Ohio State tenure, it’s clear Patricia is loved by Ohio State’s defensive players and is allowing them to play at their best. The Buckeyes’ defense has been the best in the country so far this season as a result, though Ryan Day doesn’t want them to become satisfied with their early success.

Just sayin': Over the years you have heard coaches say "we need to do a better job coaching" and/or "we need to coach up these guys so they play at a higher level", etc. and very little seemed to change. With all the players (and the DC) Ohio State lost off last year's defense, everybody thought that 2025 defense probably wouldn't be quite as good (especially early in the season); and the offense might have to play a bigger role in "carrying the team", if the 2025 team was you be successful. Well, so far this season it has been just the opposite. The defense has played a huge role in "carrying the team" as the offense developes (which they are doing), etc. Matt Patricia is living proof that a coach can make a significant difference in a player/team's performance. It just appears that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts" so far for this year's defense and that is mainly due to Matt Patricia.

Each time I read about how he simplifies things I think of “the definition of genius is taking the complex and making it simple.”

Maybe we went from an intelligent DC to a genius-level one. I’ll take it!
I think we went from a guy who thinks genius is being a mad scientist and that his system is the best and only way to a guy who is smart enough to be flexible as to personnel and scheme and to teach rather than dictate.
