In one interview I saw Klatt say he talked with Hafley after our 1st game and Hafley mentioned that OSU would need to change somethings because they didn’t have the same players to run the 2019 D.

    I should have clarified.

I don't know that "we" have a choice.

DB room is just decimated in terms of depth and experience from last year. Leaving the LB's in on obvious passing downs was very telling to me. Coombs and company see practice, they know what they have and they apparently have zero faith that the new guys are anywhere near ready.

I look at what the coaches had to say when they signed them..”they have the talent we need to coach them” you had an extra whole week coach one of them up ..I hate the Co Vid excuse you had meetings since August it’s Thanksgiving.. some corners get by on instincts even in the NFL.

Losing brown was a devastating loss. Without him, they don't have 3 corners they can rely upon, or 2 safeties, and those are mutually exclusive.

You can replace Hooker with Proctor, which would be a dramatic upgrade just from a measurable/skillset standpoint, and still have a giant issue.

    1. CB Okudah - early NFL
    2. CB Wade
    3. CB Banks
    4. CB Brown - inj for year
    5. CB 2019 - grinch actually recruiting one
    6. CB Johnson
    7. CB Phillips - decommit to Utah

    1. CB/S Riep - dismissed
    2. S Wint - dismissed
    3. S White - transferred
    4. S Battle - switched to Bama
    5. S Hooker
    6. CB/S Williamson
    7. S Proctor
    8. S Williams - inj all year

    Pretty young: Cavazos, Watts, Ransom

So to recap; OSU can barely field a nickel defense this year. They cannot, at this point, field a dime defense, using 6 DB's, unless they want to run some true freshmen out there.

Speaking of which, what about Martinez, Hickman and Shaw? I've lost track of them. Against Illinois and MSU how much worse can they be than what we are currently seeing? Maybe time for some new blood a la White in 2018.

I don't know the stats that go into that, but I can tell you outside of their games against 1-6 Duke and 1-7 Syracuse, they've given up at least 26 every other game. Their defense has been far from good and Phil Jurkovec is doing a good job of carrying that team.

Hafley I think is going to be a very good coach - the point I was trying to make was Hafley with this talent in the secondary would look very different. We're a few ingredients short of a BBQ so we're just trying to make chopped steak out there.

Yeah, it’s definitely not fare to lay all the blame of Coombs so I should probably retract some of that. And I agree that coaches know what they see in practice but don’t they balance that with what they see in games? Hooker looked absolutely awful. If we are putting our guys on an island or guys just keep making the same mistakes then something needs to change.

Shaw was someone I had been thing about.

Here is the point, football at almost all levels is so pass heavy that 5 DBs is almost necessary as a base it seems. If the goal is to win a Natty then the current product will probably get shredded by Clemson or Bama.

I just see Northwestern playing better defense than the Buckeyes and it kills me.

Should be more on the side of "expect them to adjust and be prepared to act in kind." Resting on our laurels seems to be the status quo at halftime these days.

I think this relates to keeping modern CFB defense vs offense in perspective. A "good" defense now will still give up an average ppg in the mid to high 20's. You are doing good to keep any offense with a pulse under 30. You just simply can't lead with the defense anymore because eventually, you are going to face a legit offense and it will break that 30 barrier on you.

As of right now OSU gives up 26 ppg. Clemson gives up 22 and Bama gives up 19 but that number is massively inflated by allowing a total of 3 points to MSU and UK. Before that it was at 26.

Depth and experience in the secondary is a major concern, lack of pass rush from the DE's sure as shit isn't helping. Both of those things can improve over the next few weeks of game reps.

Yep. And making teams react to something other than our base defense.

Between Clemson, Bama and OSU, I’m pretty sure that OSU is also the only team to have a new DC and CB coach of the 3. I mention that, because yes, Hafley said changes would need to be made, but with no off season, did no one think that there would be growing pains at times? No time to install a new defense, losing a ton of talent, and then throw in injuries and a game like this was bound to happen. I’m sure that many of us thought that a game like this would happen against a team like Ped St, and Indiana has shocked the conference.
I tend to laugh at the critique of Coombs now, like all of the sudden he can’t coach. Our entire fan base was elated when he was hired, and now all of the sudden he’s seen as a bum because we’re in the midst of the craziest season in history. Unranked Ole Miss had 2 RBs with over 120yds and a QB go 21/28 365yds on Bama, unranked BC had 28pts on Clemson and not mention ND dropping 47 on them. OSU has 2 games to work out the kinks against subpar comp, and then the Game where we should curb stomp scUM and then the Big 10 west champion is a crapshoot. Step back from the ledge, 2020 is a messed up season in so many ways but Coombs isn’t the main problem

Certainly the talent is significantly down from last year.

I will say we disguised man vs zone significantly better last year. I don’t know if that was a Hafley thing, but we are giving away coverages pre-snap again, which is a little disappointing. Simple motion is telling offense what defense we’re in.

Hafley was pretty creative in that regard....just bc a DB wouldn’t shadow a receiver in motion, didn’t mean we weren’t in man. They’d show zone pre-snap and actually jump into man post snap, and vice versa where they’d shadow a receiver in motion as if they were in man, to drop into zone.

Coombs is a smart guy and coached a helluva DB room in Tennessee while there. I think lack of reps (the Covid excuse) is legitimate. But I think they’re extremely basic right now, and it sucks when QBs know if it’s man or zone pre-snap bc it makes the read infinitely easier for QB. If my one wish were granted, it’d be that we’d play a little more zone in general this year, but we’d be more exotic in coverages and disguise what we’re in better. Not only would it make life harder on opposing QB’s but it’d make our secondary look a little better....and it’s nothing physical....just getting a little more creative in game-planning.
