DC Jim Knowles (National Champion)

pressure was there, but we were still over-pursuing. was too easy for their QB to step up and slip through for some decent gains.

gabriel was doing the same thing.

EDIT: i know, i know... 4 sacks, but there were a few nailbiting moments.
Eh hard to be critical imo. Bucks are the only team this year to hold UT to sub 300 yards of total offense this year and that's with UT mounting a garbage time TD drive of 70-ish yards or so. In terms of stats this Buckeye defense has only given up 300+ yards of total offense once this year to Oregon. Kind of insane to think about.

well, yeah, but… we’re going up against oregon next, hence my concern about gabriel’s slipperiness. we haven’t done well this year with slippery quarterbacks who are able to step up into the pocket and scramble out.

our lb’s are doing a better job of containing the qb scrambles, and the backs are coming in for support. but the backs likely will not be able to do that against oregon.

so maybe it just comes down to how much our lb’s have improved since we played in eugene.

This game was a total warmup for Oregon. Difference will be the accuracy of Gabriel and the talent of WRs. You can see the strategy working though. Gabriel ain't getting up from all the hits Nico took either

For a seconds there I thought the rb out of the backfield was going to kill us. On the last Play they put Styles on it.
I will assume by Sunday morning Knowles will have to figure out how to defend that play because you can bet your ass we'll see it again Jan 20
I read, and it seems anecdotally correct to me, that Ohio State was blitzing an abnormally large percentage of the time against Texas and the RB out of the backfield weakness was a direct result of that.

I assume they were trying to 1) change things up to break tendencies and 2) recognize and counter Texas’s talent that they tried to disrupt rather than react to.

I imagine Ohio State/Knowles will be able to get back to dictating the game without taking risks they might get burned on against ND given that their QB struggles to throw and their WRs aren’t elite.

I’d imagine a heavy dose of trying to hit their TE’s and Leonard taking runs. Fortunately we did well against Penn state with Warren to give me faith in stopping that. I just hope we don’t see Leonard taking off for 7-10 yards up the middle like we did earlier this year.

Spy with a linebacker like we did against Oregon and not JT like we did against Tennessee and I think we’ll be okay.

Also, I REALLY like how (up until Texas) they were pinching the dline in (Sawyer and JT are, surprisingly, really good at it over speed rushing the edge), lining up/playing the LBs on the edge, and sitting Downs (or one of the other safeties at times) right in the middle to be an absolute monster against the pass and run.

Texas was good enough to make us react… I don’t think ND has the talent to take us out of what we want to do.
