DB Tyvis Powell (National Champion)

If one looks up 'True Buckeye' in the dictionary (aka Google in 2011), it would show a picture of Tyvs. Whether or not he excels at OSU or not, he is one of those kids that will bleed scarlet & gray. Whoever is at the helm, he will be happy he's there. I guess that the 5*'s want to pick a winner going in, but maybe they don't realize that the Pros pick those that are players at whatever level/team they play with. Jerry Rice, arguably the best WR in NFL history, played at, what, Southern Missippippi State? Not a paragon of football history, but that didn't make any difference. To Tyvis, OSU was where he wanted to go to earn his degree and play his trade at football. Here's hoping he does well during his 4-5 years at OSU and forever in life. He's one of those that stood by his commitment during thick and thin.

Cleveland-area recruits say they're sticking with Ohio State despite bowl ban
Published: Tuesday, December 20, 2011
By Joe Maxse, The Plain Dealer

No big deal.

That's was the general consensus among Ohio State's area recruits in their reaction to the bad news hitting the Buckeyes on Tuesday. The one-year ban from postseason play, which had the most immediate impact on these new players, is something that will just have to be dealt with.

"It doesn't really matter [to] me," said Bedford's Tyvis Powell, whose last day of high school is today. "I still want to be a Buckeye and we are still going to win the Big Ten. My motivation is to go out and play for the fans."

Powell, a 6-4 defensive back, will be home for the holidays. He will enroll at OSU on Jan. 3 to begin his educational and football goals.

"We're still going to beat Michigan, which is the biggest bowl," he said. "Beating Michigan is like winning the national championship.

"My reaction would be calm. I can't be happy with a bowl ban, but as long as we are winning and I'm getting a great education at the Fisher School of Business at the Ohio State University, it's all right."

Cool little story that happened today.

My youngest son is a freshman...about 6'1/2" and close to 235-240 lbs. He is a center (pretty good too) and also guard. He has always been an OL and he loves being an OL. When he read the above quoted article in the Plain Dealer, he cut it out and taped it to his bedroom wall. Kinda cool that a DB supplied an OL with some motivation.

My oldest son is graduating this Saturday, and today we had some folks come by to help out with some cleaning. Two very polite young people these folks were. Turns out, one of them is also graduating. I heard him tell Mrs. Buckiprof that he was graduating from Bedford. I told my youngest to ask him if he knew Tyvis Powell. He did and it turns out he was Tyvis' brother.

Immediately my son talked to him about Tyvis and mentioned the article about Tyvis that he cut out and taped to his wall to help keep him motivated. Well, the young man pulled out his cell phone and called Tyvis and the next thing I know, my son is talking to Tyvis.

Tyvis told my son that he was "honored and humbled" by him cutting out the article and serving to motivate him (an OL to boot!). He asked how my son's grades were and asked if he wanted to go to OSU. My son said that , "of course my dream is to play football at OSU, but if I can't I still want to go to OSU. I am a Buckeye, football or no football!". Tyvis told him he felt the same way about OSU. He was OSU bound football or no football. He too, was a Buckeye...football or no football. Also, Tyvis stressed the importance of getting good grades more than once to my son.

They talked about 5 minutes and my son was pretty stoked to talk to the guy whose face and story he has seen everyday on his bedroom wall.

His brother took a photo of my son's wall and sent the pic to Tyvis. He told me that Tyvis simply talking to my son, seeing the picture of his wall, knowing that his story in the Plain Dealer is on his wall and motivating him, will actually make Tyvis work a little bit harder.....knowing that someone "looks up to him and his hard work" will mean the world to him.

My son came away quite impressed with him, and I came away (hearing the things Tyvis said) knowing, as others have already stated in this thread, he is a true Buckeye. I also linger on the words from his brother. How my son's wall, with this article taped up...an article that my son uses as motivation for himself....will in turn serve as a little more motivation for Tyvis. Not only a true Buckeye, but Tyvis seems to get "it".

Thought I would share a cool little story about one of our Buckeyes and if Tyvis visits this site, a hearty thank you for taking the time to talk to my son.
