DB recruiting failures as seen in 2020

Not specifically disagreeing with your point but I do think it’s worth considering that the other elite schools missed out as well. Do they have as much of a “relationship” as tOSU? Maybe and maybe not.

The point is, perhaps it should be acknowledged that Goodwin might have simply made the pick he wanted and has less to do with Stud “blowing it”.

Back to my point that once is a coincidence, twice is a trend. Stud has swung and missed on at least 4 (Pending a Goodwin flip) in the past 3 recruiting cycles. I don't mean to keep beating it to death but rationalizing it away on a case by case basis is disingenuous imo. OSU football is the ultimate accountability driven outfit and you have to wonder out loud about OT recruiting no matter how good interior OL recruiting is or how much depth we have this year.

We all saw what happened with one bad year of recruiting DB's in the form of the 2020 secondary.

Couldn’t disagree more
How can you disagree with that? Last year's issue was the back 7 on defense. It featured the following:

Baron Browning #1 LB
Shaun Wade #2 CB
Tyreke Johnson #2 S
Teradja Mitchell #2 LB
Justin Hilliard #3 LB
Josh Proctor #7 S
Ronnie Hickman #10 S

What more can you really ask for to have a top 25 defense? Yet it was ranked at the bottom in the country.

I agree that still should be more than enough talent to field at least a top 50 pass D, but the lack of depth definitely showed too. Whiffing on an entire class means you have to hit at an unrealistically high rate on the others.

Yeah...But my point of listing those names in particular is that they were all healthy. We had top players at their position and ranked near the bottom in just about every passing category.

I disagree here. Last years issues had nothing to do with any recruiting misses or a bad year recruiting. The guys who played in the secondary last year were all priority recruits and are playing what they we’re recruited to play.

I don't have time to look them all up and list them out but the almost 0-fer class 2-3 years ago and the attrition of the two guys who were kicked off the team, recruiting losses to Bama led to us having to rely on guys last year that would not have been at the top of the depth chart under normal circumstances.

Why are we listing linebackers in a conversation about the secondary? Cornerback recruiting from 2018-2020:

2018: Banks, Johnson
2019: None
2020: Cavazos, Watts, Martinez

Three classes produced one starter, one guy who’s a safety still trying to figure out CB, and three raw true frosh who all needed one year minimum to learn the position.

How can you say that recruiting wasn’t detrimental to the overall play of the position?

What guy last year played significant time at DB who was not supposed to?

The only difference is, there wasn’t the rotation of guys. Plenty of teams go without rotating their DB’s.

We’ve been told the issue last year was the lack of practice time. Now it’s supposedly talent or depth? With nothing but top of the board guys playing back there? Sounds like another excuse to me.

The better question was why were you talking about the secondary in Kiyanta Goodwin's thread? That's where I replied to your comment about last year's failures. And idk, maybe because the Linebackers play a significant role in pass defense. More so now than ever.

But again, Ohio State had more than enough talent in the secondary to be a top 25 pass defense.

I'm old enough to remember when 3 star Malcolm Jenkins, 3 star Chimdi Chekwa, 2 star Donald Washington, 3 star Anderson Russell and barely 4 star Kurt Coleman had Ohio State as one of the top pass defenses in the country. I guess landing 5 star CB Tedd Ginn was the reason why...?
