Special teams standout Nate Ebner turned in some of the faster 40 times on the day, recording unofficial times of 4.48 and 4.47. For him, he couldn't have asked for a better performance.

"I wish I could do a little bit better in everything, that's just how I am," he said. "But I think it went well, though. As good as I could ask for. I'm happy with it. That's all I can control.

"I don't really have any expectations, but if a team is interested in me, I'm going to give them everything I've got."

Ebner, who is also a rugby standout, knows that he has some options if the NFL doesn't work out, and there is a very specific reason why he would continue to exhaust those options.

?I'll probably go back to rugby, without a doubt because I'm gonna be hitting people as much as I can until my body says 'No', and then I'll think about getting a real job.?

He also has his eyes on the Olympics in 2016.

Ebner impresses

Nate Ebner, a special-teams standout at Ohio State, might have improved his stock as much as anyone. He was timed by at least one scout at 4.51 in the 40 and had a standing vertical jump of 39 inches. He is likely to be on the radar now for NFL teams seeking special-teams help.

?I did the best I could,? Ebner said. ?Obviously, I wish I could do a little better in everything. That?s just how I am. I think it went well, though, as good as I could hope for.?

He could (in theory) play in several of the IRB 7s stops during the NFL offseason.

He's already infinitely better than Miles Craig, the as*clown playing 7s for us with the rat tail, who supposedly "played" for the Dolphins.

Among Buckeyes with NFL Draft dreams, Nate Ebner's is rather special

Did I think I'd be in a position to get drafted?" said OSU special teamer Nate Ebner. "No way. But to possibly play on a pro team? I'd like to say that was always maybe the goal."

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Four Ohio State players should be taken in the NFL Draft this week. There's a chance the former rugby player who doesn't really watch the draft could get picked, too.

Nate Ebner is listed as a safety but played just a handful of defensive snaps as a Buckeye. But after opening eyes at the school's pro day in March, Ohio State's best special teams player from a year ago is completely focused on taking a shot at the NFL and making an international rugby career just a backup plan.

"I'm giving football my 100 percent," Ebner said Tuesday. "I don't want to say, 'If I wasn't messing around with rugby, what would have happened?' It's football all the way, and if that doesn't work out, I'm definitely playing rugby somewhere if I'm not playing football.

"But I'm going to be hitting people with my body as long as it can take it. And rugby's too fun to not play if I'm not playing football."

After walking on with the Buckeyes in 2009, Ebner talking about the NFL might seem odd. But if you're on the field in an OSU uniform, you'll always get a look from the league.

Ebner wasn't a recruit at all. But if there's anyone who helped their NFL prospects with the 2011 Buckeyes, it may be Ebner. For a guy who didn't play high school football, now contemplating making a living at the game is a bit surreal. Except Ebner, who competed at an elite level in rugby, couldn't help but believe he'd have a shot.

"Did I think I'd be in a position to get drafted?" Ebner said. "No way. But to possibly play on a pro team? I'd like to say that was always maybe the goal, but I didn't know how realistic it was until this past year."

Ebner was timed as fast as a 4.48 in the 40 at the pro day, showed his agility with a fast time in the three-cone drill and did well in the broad and vertical jumps. He figured he might do well at the tests, and what he proved is that at about 215 pounds, he could be a raw athlete with a lot of room for growth. That should make him worth a look as an across-the-board special teams player, either in the draft or in free agency. He has continued to talk with NFL teams since pro day.

"I'm not getting overly excited about the draft," Ebner said. "I just want a chance with a team. At the end of the day, you have to show up when it comes time to play."

Then you get your body out there and start hitting people.

S Nate Ebner (seventh or free agent): Would have to make his mark as a go-to guy on special teams, but he filled that role well at Ohio State.

NFL draft: Ohio State's Ebner hopes he gets a call this weekend
Nate Ebner caught scouts? eyes at Ohio State?s pro day with his running and jumping abilities.
By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch Friday April 27, 2012

At the end of last season, Nate Ebner?s improbable football career figured to be over.

Strictly a rugby player at Hilliard Davidson, Ebner played almost entirely on special teams at Ohio State. He was a walk-on until earning a scholarship for his senior season.

That is not the typical r?sum? for a professional football career. But an exceptional OSU pro day performance in March has given Ebner hope that by the end of the weekend, he will be on an NFL team. There?s a possibility that Ebner will be drafted, but it?s more likely that he will latch on as a free agent.

?I?m excited, obviously,? Ebner said. ?I don?t want to get overly excited, and I don?t have too-high expectations. Nobody is guaranteed anything. I?m just hoping to get on a team somewhere and make the most of my opportunity.?

Ebner entered pro day as an afterthought to NFL scouts. But after he ran 40-yard dash times of 4.47 and 4.48 seconds and posted a vertical jump of 39 inches, scouts scrambled around the Woody Hayes facility to find out more about Ebner.

?For pro day, we were training four hours a day,? Ebner said. ?It was intense stuff. I took it as seriously as I could.?

Ebner is listed as a safety, but he saw exactly three plays at that position last year ? those three plays included a sack, he?s proud to note ? but NFL teams are always looking for special-teams players late in the draft or as free agents, and Ebner revels in that role.

?He?s a sick athlete,? Ohio State linebacker Andrew Sweat said, ?and he?s one of the toughest players I?ve played with.?

Nate Ebner and the NFL Draft

Ebner in the CRC with Ohio State
Nate Ebner won?t have the ESPN camera in his face or walk across the stage at the Radio City Music Hall in New York this weekend. But, chances are, he?s holding out hope his name will be called as one of the 253 players selected by the time the NFL Draft concludes Saturday.

A walk-on turned special teams standout at Ohio State, Ebner greatly boosted his chances to become a professional football player at Ohio State?s pro day last month, running a 4.48 40-yard dash. The former USA U20 fullback has been in contact with teams since.

?I'm not getting overly excited about the draft," Ebner told the Cleveland Plain Dealer earlier this week. "I just want a chance with a team. At the end of the day, you have to show up when it comes time to play."

Even if Ebner isn?t drafted, which is entirely possible, his courtship with an NFL career won?t be over. Next week every team in the NFL will begin signing undrafted rookie free agents, and they may take on more than ever before, as the NFL has expanded the overall team roster capacity to 90 players.

?Going the football route for now. Would love to keep in touch with the rugby team and will definitely contemplate making the switch,? Ebner told RUGBYMag.com, ?but for now it?s all football until they tell me to leave! Or also if these new leagues start to pick up for sevens or I get some good offers to play 15s that I can't turn down.?
