Who is the Nate Ebner wannabe sitting to his right? Chuck Norris?

Nate is quickly becoming one of my favorite Buckeyes this season. Bad Ass.

James Georgiades...was a walk-on fullback from North Canton Hoover but, as I understand it, is now more of a student/coach due to a lingering back problem. I saw him on the sidelines this past weekend in an OSU polo and my understanding is he is helping in a kind of grad assitant-type role. We hope to get James back for rugby this spring.

Ohio State notes: Ex-rugby player will be team captain vs. Toledo (with video)

COLUMBUS ? Nate Ebner never played high school football.

Yet when Saturday arrives, the 2008 graduate of Hilliard Davidson will be one of three captains who will represent Ohio State's football team at midfield for the pregame coin toss.

Talk about something that doesn't happen often.

A senior on the Buckeyes' roster, Ebner is a converted rugby player. The 6-foot, 205-pounder has worked his way through being a walk-on to being an integral part of Ohio State's special teams units.

After starting his career as a walk-on, he is on scholarship for his senior year.

Needless to say, being named a captain in Week 2 ? part of OSU's changing game captain system ? is a big deal for Ebner, who will be joined in captaincy by quarterback Joe Bauserman and linebacker Andrew Sweat.

"I think it's really exciting," Ebner said. "It's humbling. I'm excited to be a senior and lead the team. It's a great opportunity."

Coming out of Hilliard Davidson, Ebner was a standout on the United States' under-19 and under-20 national rugby teams. He was named MVP of the Rugby World Cup in both 2007 and 2008, and at age 17 ? while still at Davidson ? he was the youngest player to ever play in the National 7s.

He joined Ohio State's football team for the 2009 season.

And now we know where the back problems came from :wink2::biggrin:

I'm starting to like the concept of rotating captains. It gives guys like Nate who stay under the radar to most people but leave it all out on the field each Saturday another chance to lead. Nate was really flying around against Akron and I'm looking forward to him doing that all season.

Ohio State football: Former walk-on is named a captain

First, a scholarship. Now, captaincy.

For Nate Ebner, it?s hard to imagine a better start to a senior season in a career that seemed unimaginable just a few years ago.

Ebner didn?t play football at Hilliard Davidson. He was a rugby player, one good enough to make the U.S. national team.

Ebner got the itch to play football as a college freshman and successfully tried out as a sophomore, quickly becoming a force on special teams. Coach Luke Fickell awarded him a scholarship before this season.

Against Akron, he made three tackles in kick coverage. Ohio State is naming captains on a game-by-game basis this season, and Ebner will be one for Saturday?s game against Toledo.

?It?s extremely exciting,? Ebner said. ?Knowing I?m a senior and can lead the guys out there, it?s humbling. I?m proud to be a captain.?

I know this is way the hell out in front but is it conceivable that this guy could make an NFL team as a special teams maniac? Why not?

I havent gotten to see enough of him at safety but the way he plays special teams is, well, special. Larry Izzo made pro bowls out of special teams. There are terrible receivers in the league because they arent afraid to go do it on the special teams. If he showed very well at the combine, which I'm sure he would, he could get a serious look and then make it with the level of attitude and talent he has.

Dont know how much Rugby pays but the league minimum in the NFL is a pretty sweet paycheck. Just sayin.
