DB Najee Murray (Montreal Alouettes)

Entrance Exam: Najee Murray
Defensive back sees action in opener against Miami, posts two tackles
Updated: September 10, 2012
By Brad Bournival | BuckeyeNation

Najee Murray and success go hand in hand. So does speed, and that's a big reason Buckeyes coaches have already found a way to put Murray on the field.

Murray helped Steubenville's 4x200-meter relay team win a state title at the track and field facility next door from the Woody Hayes Athletic Center at Ohio State in 2011 with a state-record time. He kept the quicks up through his senior season.

One of the top defensive backs for the Big Red, the 5-foot-9, 179-pound Murray led Steubenville to the state semifinals and a 12-2 record in 2009, and an 11-1 record and the regional semifinals in 2011.

As a senior, Murray recorded 54 tackles and was named first-team Division III All-Ohio. He was also named the Associated Press' Division III co-Defensive Player of the year in 2012.

In 2011, he led the Big Red with 17 receptions for 280 yards and had four touchdowns.

Murray opened the 2012 season for Ohio State with two tackles against Miami (Ohio) in a reserve role.

Najee is a very humble young man. I know him personally and got to coach him in track the last 2 years. He will be an impact palyer at ohio st. He is not afraid to come up and hit someone in run support. His conerback skills are already known as he was the MVP of ohio states camp as a senior in high school.

In case people didn't know Najee had an injury occur at practice this week. Slight tear of the acl/mcl. He had surgery on Wednesday and from what I heard it went well. Unfortunately he may be out for the rest of the season, they are looking at the possibility of a medical redshirt. Will try to update as I get the info.......Get well soon buddy!!!!:osu:

Hate to see a guy injured, but getting him for 3/4 years would be great.

He's not seeing much if any PT this season, but could very well be a starter next. Lot's of talent, wish him all the best in his recovery.

Man injuries are really hitting us hard. Lets hope he can get a medical redshirt and come back ready to compete for a spot next year.

Who is 'they'?

Getting a year back after playing in 6 games is unheard of. The rule-of-thumb is the player has to be hurt in the first 1/3 of the season.

I believe the rule is the player can't play in more than 1/3 of the games and can't play during the second half of the season.

Not sure how many games he's played in. Either way, hope he fully recovers, sounds like a nasty injury.

Below are the notes on a medical redshirt, pertinent info bolded.

A special case involves the eligibility of a player who loses the majority of a season to injury. Popularly known as a medical redshirt, a hardship waiver may be granted an athlete who appears in fewer than 30% of his or her team's competitions (with none coming after the midway point of the season), then suffers a season-ending injury. A player who is granted such a waiver is treated for the purposes of his or her eligibility as though he or she had not competed in that season.
