DB Malcolm Jenkins (All B1G, All-American, Thorpe Award, All-Pro, 2x Super Bowl Champion)

I heard an interview with Tressel around the 2008 election, where he was asked which of his players would get his vote if they were in politics, and he responded without any hesitation "Malcolm Jenkins." Jenkins is the epitome of what we like call a Tressel-type recruit, and I've thought for years he's really going to make a difference on and off the field.

Will Malcolm Jenkins make a big impact at free safety?
Jenkins, the team?s top draft pick in 2009, made the move from cornerback to free safety just before OTAs and transitioned well by most accounts.
While he?s probably the heir apparent to All-Pro Darren Sharper, Jenkins will get a lot of reps in training camp, because Sharper is going to be limited as he returns from knee surgery.
Jenkins (6-0, 204) has the size and quickness to make a bigger contribution in the back end of the secondary after struggling when isolated one-on-one on a faster receiver last season

Free safety Malcolm Jenkins: After struggling at times at cornerback as a rookie, Jenkins, who has good size and speed, will get plenty of opportunities to show the coaching staff what he can do at a new position.

Jenkins made a smooth transition to free safety in the organized team activities and minicamp, and he?ll get many more practice reps than he would ordinarily have had in training camp because All-Pro Darren Sharper will be brought along slowly after having knee surgery in March.

Malcolm Jenkins providing competition for Darren Sharper as New Orleans Saints' starting safety

Gregg Williams was in his element.

There are few things the New Orleans Saints' defensive coordinator likes more than a competitive position battle at training camp. He has one at free safety.

It might shock folks to think Sharper, an All-Pro coming off a career season, would have to fight for his starting spot, especially against an unproven second-year pro in his first year at the position.

But it could happen. And not just because Sharper is still trying to recover from offseason surgery on his 34-year-old left knee. Jenkins is playing that well -- so well that Williams insists the Saints could start the season with the second-year ballhawk at free safety and not miss a beat.

"He's special," Williams said.

Jenkins has been one of the stars of the Saints' offseason. He's playing like he has been at safety his entire life, not just six months. He's playing like he's not just going to settle for an internship this season.

He made the highlight play of the morning workout, a torpedo tackle of Lance Moore that cartwheeled the diminutive receiver high into the air and planted him on his head. It was the kind of hit safeties are paid to make. It showed Jenkins is making the transition from cornerback a seamless one.

"I'm feeling more comfortable every day," Jenkins said.

How is the transition from cornerback to free safety going?

?It?s going good. The transition has been smooth. I had the work in the spring. Now it?s just about getting the experience and getting better.?

How important is Darren Sharper to this defense?

?It?s huge. If you look at the amount of players Darren made for us last year from the free safety position, that?s a big hole to fill, depending on how his injury works out or if it?s a regular injury during the season, we need someone to come in and fill that role. Right now I?m just trying to get all the experience I can so if I do get in I can replicate what he did.?

What?s the hardest thing to get used to at safety?

?Just the vision. You go from looking at little things like receivers? hips or little dots on receivers. Now you have to see the whole field, the receivers, the quarterback, linemen, receivers out of your peripheral vision. That transition is pretty hard because you have to consciously say open up your vision and process things. But you get used to it after a while.?

?It?s gone well,? Jenkins said Wednesday of his transition. ?Every day as we go through different phases of the game I learn a little bit more about the position, getting a lot of good experience.?

As a special teams player, Jenkins had nine tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery as a rookie. It could be those contributions that help the Saints? staff make the final call.

?That?s what all young guys have to understand,? said Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. ?You have to play on special teams and then we?ll find a place for you (on the roster).?

Said Jenkins: ?I think I contributed a lot last year on special teams and I plan on doing the same this year.?

For Jenkins, the joy of winning the Super Bowl has him just as hungry in his second season.

?Once you taste that trophy you don?t want to go back to anything else,? he said. ?I don?t know anything else and I?m not trying to figure it out.?

New Orleans Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins (27) does a dance for teammates while they stretch during a joint football practice with the New England Patriots in Foxborough, Mass. Wednesday Aug. 11, 2010.? Read more ?

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. ― The first notes began blaring over the loudspeakers at New England?s suburban Boston training facility and Malcolm Jenkins began to twitch.

The song was ?Atomic Dog? by George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars and Jenkins knew exactly what he had to do.

Dance, and his teammates were more than eager to egg him on.

So, as the Saints went through stretching drills, Jenkins got up and went through his stepping drills, showing off moves likely not seen since his final days as an Omega Fraternity member at Ohio State University.

?Our theme some is like the Atomic Dog so when they threw it on, I had to do step right quick,? Jenkins said, a smile plastered on his face. ?They were egging me on. I wasn?t going to do it, but they made me do it.?

That Jenkins danced wasn?t a surprise, Reggie Bush said.

?No, because we have quite a few guys with us that were in fraternities in college and we joke around with them about the little dances, the fraternity dance,? Bush said. ?I don?t know what it?s called. I play football. I didn?t do the fraternity thing in college. They do it every now and then and they brag about it.?

New Orleans Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins catches a pass during practice at training camp Aug. 6.

Last year's first-round pick Malcolm Jenkins wasn't fully expected to take over the reins at this position so soon, but with the offseason surgery to All-Pro Darren Sharper and his slow rehab, Jenkins is making strides. Originally drafted as a cornerback, Jenkins has made the switch to safety rather seamlessly. His size and playmaking ability is suitable for the position, although he hasn't quite shown the big-play-making abilities of Sharper.

New Orleans Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins ready to start if needed in Week 1

With just two weeks remaining before the season opener, it's looking more and more likely that second-year pro Malcolm Jenkins will begin the year as the New Orleans Saints' starting free safety.

It looks more and more like Malcolm Jenkins will be the New Orleans Saints opening day starter at safety.

Veteran Darren Sharper still has not returned to the practice field since undergoing knee surgery in early March, and he's been wearing a brace on his left knee during the past week while out on the practice field.

Both Sharper and Coach Sean Payton insist that there's still time to evaluate his progress and that no decision has been made on his roster status yet. But with each passing week, the possibility grows that he will start the season on the physically-unable-to-perform list, which would keep him out for at least six weeks.

"Certainly we were hoping that we were closer to getting them on the field," Payton said of Sharper and veteran linebacker Clint Ingram, who also has not practiced yet after undergoing a similar knee surgery in the spring. "Yet you still have to pay attention to the injury. We're still going through the process ... evaluating the progress and the treatments."

Jenkins, meanwhile, said he has been preparing all along as though he will start in Week 1, because he didn't know what would happen with Sharper's health. And he said, if needed, he hopes to be able to step in and play the position just as well.

That's an awful tall order, considering Sharper intercepted nine passes, scored three touchdowns and was named first-team All-Pro last year, while Jenkins just switched from cornerback to free safety this spring.

But that speaks to the confidence Jenkins has - and the confidence the Saints have shown in him ever since they drafted him with the 14th overall pick in the 2009 draft out of Ohio State.

"I like my chances with him," defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said when asked if the Minnesota Vikings might try to pick on Jenkins in the season opener.

Williams said it will be hard for teams to create matchup problems against Jenkins, since he has the coverage experience as a cornerback. And he and Payton both lauded Jenkins for being a quick study.

Jenkins settling in as free safety

METAIRIE ? Malcolm Jenkins? stint as the New Orleans Saints starting free safety was supposed to be limited to the first couple of weeks of training camp until starter Darren Sharper?s surgically repaired knee was healthy enough for him to start practice.

But four weeks into camp, Sharper has yet to practice. And Jenkins, last year?s No. 1 draft choice who played cornerback as a rookie, has taken advantage of the extra time to acclimate to his new position.

?I think he?s doing really well,? secondary coach Dennis Allen said. ?I think the thing about Malcolm is he?s an extremely hard worker. He?s dedicated to his profession. He?s a pro, and I think he?s got instincts for the game.

?Now there?s a learning curve that we?re going through right now. There are mistakes that he?s making. Those aren?t anything that?s out of the ordinary. I think he?s getting better every day, and I?m pleased with his progress.?
