Kirk Ferentz used to watch with amazement as Ohio State's NFL production line turned out one first-round draft choice after another.

The Iowa coach was an NFL assistant then and the rate at which the Buckeyes were cranking out all-pros didn't seem to bother anybody in the professional ranks as much as it rankled former Ohio State coach John Cooper for one reason.

"I remember coach Cooper being upset because they were losing so many juniors," said Ferentz, whose 13th-ranked Hawkeyes play the No. 1 Buckeyes Saturday in Kinnick Stadium. "Sure enough, those guys would get drafted usually in the top 10 of the NFL draft, and then a year later there would be (an Ohio State) guy higher on the board at that same position."

That's the world Ohio State lives in, and Ferentz and others around the Big Ten have had to come to grips with the fact that no matter who the Buckeyes lose, they seemingly have somebody nearly as good waiting in line.

Ohio State watches cornerback Ashton Youboty go off the board in the third round of the draft in April. By September, sophomore Malcolm Jenkins is already being praised as one of the nation's best at his position.

Jenkins filled highlight reels with his 61-yard interception return for a touchdown against Penn State, but it's more than just that play that has caught the attention of his fans.

"I see a lot of college football players via film or watching other games and I don't think there's a better corner in the country than Malcolm Jenkins, and I'm not just saying that because of the interception," former Ohio State linebacker and ESPN color commentator Chris Spielman said this week on WBNS, the Buckeye flagship radio station.

"I'm saying that week after week, he rises to the challenge and when he plays, he plays violent, and I love that."

Jenkins says that's what he wants to hear.

"It's great to hear people think of me that highly," he said. "It's definitely one of my goals. I want to be one of the top corners in the nation, and for people to think that highly of me is great, but I've got to stay level-headed. It's a compliment, but I'm sure there's a lot of other people who think differently. I've got to keep improving my game until there's no doubt."

There was, however, some uncertainty about Jenkins' touchdown against the Nittany Lions. He weaved his way through potential tacklers, but prematurely started to celebrate the touchdown. Replays showed Jenkins dropped the ball at the 1-yard-line.

"The coaches addressed that," he said. "I guess I got away with one."

What was the message of the Ohio State coaches?

"The just told me to hand the ball to the official next time and celebrate with your teammates," he said.

Jenkins ranks second on the team in interceptions with two and passes broken up with two, but he might lead the Buckeye defense in confidence.

"He's the type of guy when he steps out there he feels he's the best corner in the country and no one can beat him," Ohio State defensive tackle David Patterson said. "I think that really helps him. Malcolm plays really confident and that helps him play better. He's not intimidated by anyone he faces. I love being out there with a guy like Malcolm who has that kind of swagger. He's confident in his abilities, and he knows he can play with anybody."

Jenkins says confidence is easy to possess when you play behind a defensive line that regularly pressures quarterbacks.

"That takes a lot off me and knowing I'll get help where I'm supposed to get the help from my linebackers or safeties," he said. "(The confidence) comes from the coaches. They have a lot of faith in me and confidence (by) letting me play out there on the island by myself. If they believe in me, I should believe in myself."

The Hawkeyes had similar feelings about Jenkins after watching him help Piscataway High School to three consecutive New Jersey state titles. But even though the Hawkeyes have a recruiting presence in the state, the 6-foot-1, 202-pound cornerback said he didn't know much about Iowa and made an early commitment to the Buckeyes.

Now Jenkins looks like he's on his way to being another Buckeye coming off the NFL production line.
