DB Malcolm Jenkins (All B1G, All-American, Thorpe Award, All-Pro, 2x Super Bowl Champion)

In today's press conference, JT was asked for his thoughts on Jenkins spiking the ball at the 1 against PSU. JT mentioned that it was something he doesn't like to see, because the team emphasizes finding an official, handing off the ball, then going back to celebrate with the other 10 guys that made the play happen. JT stressed that all players are taught to act like they've been there before, then JT added, "but then I thought about it ... and Malcolm hadn't ever been there before." It sounds as though Jenkins was given a pass for his gaffe.

JT continued though, that after reviewing the film he was more concerned with Antonio Smith's apparent high stepping into the endzone. That didn't sit well with the coaches.

Those are good kids, they'll know better the next time.

I can see the high stepping not sitting well with the coaches, if only because there are officials that, in the Big House anyway, would call that a penalty.

Both Malcolm and Antonio appeared to be taken with raw emotion from my perspective. I'd like to see us avoid anything that might result in a turnover or a cheap penalty, but I can't tell you I wouldn't have done what they did if I had accomplished what they did at their age.

yep, this is more of an experience problem than anything. i think it was russel last week that tossed the ball down after an int and got a penalty. it was far less than what tate did last year against us and he only got a 5 yrd'r but oh well. the coaches immediately put their hands on russel and did a little coaching on the spot. then in the psu game hartline got a nifty little pass and left the ball on the ground then ran back to the huddle. he immediately stopped after a couple of steps, went back to the ball, picked it up, and handed it to the official who was at that point standing directly over it. that brought a smile to my face.

so i would imagine jenkins will not get a pass for what he did, but i think the fact that these kids are freshman and sophmores is not lost on the staff. regardless of how much they play like upperclassmen.

You can bet your house that both Jenkins and Yao are running extra gassers this week. I went nuts when Jenkins spiked the ball at the one. But, I'm 110% sure both are learning their lessons this week...

What a thrill for both of them ! Just imagine if that was you crossing that goal line. What would you do for just that opportunity ? They both probably didnt even notice running the last ten yards.
if you were to ask me if I would give away my wife of 39 years to be able to do that ...............

I was in that section just a few rows from the field where Jenkins took the INT for a TD. Ironically, me and the girl sitting in front of me were talking about the Gamble INT in 2002 just before that play happened. We just looked at each other, stunned. Jenkins ran into the side of the field with a ton of students and we were going nuts. I could barely keep my balance cause we were jumping on the benches, some of us falling over. Needless to say, I can't imagine what must have been going through Jenkins head after he took it to the house for the first time in his career.

Malcolm Jenkins, sophomore cornerback

On his interception during the Penn State game

"I'm not focusing on that pass any more. I am concentrating to perform in this game (against Iowa). We just want to win the turnover battle. We are going to put a lot of pressure on them and do what we did last week."

On the play of his fellow teammate Antonio Smith

"He is a hard worker and a smart guy. I see him in the film room all day, learning his craft. It has definitely been helping him, as you can see."

On his success on the field

"I didn't expect to make an impact as quickly as it happened. I just keep trying to get better every day. Going up against Ted (Ginn), (Anthony) Gonzalez and (Brian) Robiskie all day in practice - that can only make me better."

On Iowa

"They have good players and good freshmen. They won't fall asleep. I think they have a good lineup, even with the young players. We have to affect them early as we don't want to fall asleep on them."

There is a little blurb on page 43 in this weeks' Sporting News that states, "Jenkins is playing better than any corner in the country." I happen to agree with that statement.

Another corner that has made plays and gotten some publicity is Daymeion Hughes of Cal.

If they believe in me, I should believe in myself."
The Hawkeyes had similar feelings about Jenkins after watching him help Piscataway High School to three consecutive New Jersey state titles. Now Jenkins looks like he's on his way to being another Buckeye coming off the NFL production line.
