With pending suspension, O'Neal's playmaking limited to practice
COLUMBUS -- Senior safety Jamario O'Neal is working hard in preseason camp to open eyes. Or, to be more accurate, re-open eyes. He's already caught the attention of Big Ten Network cameras. Making the tour of conference schools, BTN recently aired two hours of an Ohio State practice, which included footage of O'Neal making a leaping interception.
It likely will be the only face time O'Neal gets for awhile. He and starting cornerback Donald Washington acknowledged they've been suspended for the first two games for committing a team violation this spring. Coach Jim Tressel never divulged the infraction, but what O'Neal calls an "off-field altercation" kept them and fellow defensive back Eugene Clifford (who has since transferred to Tennessee State) out of the spring game. It will sideline O'Neal and Washington until Sept. 13, when No. 2 USC hosts the third-ranked Buckeyes.
"Talking to the coaches -- once that's over, it's over," O'Neal said. "I've been working my tail off in practice because if you don't play for the first few weeks, the only thing (the coaches) have to go off of is practice.
"If you go all out in practice, then once you come back they'll think, 'OK, I want to put that guy in because I know he can make plays.' So I'm making sure I'm knowing my stuff and being in the right places."
Being in the wrong place jeopardized one of the best opportunities of O'Neal's career: he was running with the first-teamers at nickel back when he got in trouble.
"It's another stepping stone, a lump on the head, but I know I have to overcome that and, come the USC game, be ready," O'Neal said. "We put ourselves in that situation, and now we have to deal with the consequences. "Of course, it's disappointing, but I know my potential -- and this camp I really feel like I'm reaching it."
