DB Dustin Fox (National Champion)

there was TONS of talent in that osu-miami game for the ages. miami had a whopping TEN first-rounders on that roster (9 starters, one backup in vince wilfork). the starters were mcgahee-johnson-winslow-carey-mcdougle-joseph-vilma-williams-taylor. 21/22 starters on the buckeyes have been drafted or will likely be drafted (assuming that clarett-joe-sims-fox get drafted). the only undrafted guy was bryce bishop, who would lose his job the following year to nick mangold, who will probably get drafted. in addition, the bucks had 3 non-starters (sander, allen, carter) that got drafted as well. If there is another game in the history of college football that consisted of so many draft choices (rounds 1-7), I'd like to see it. Just another reason to support the claim that it was the greatest college football game ever.

Fox

I was just reading Mr.Bucknuts article on the talent level on the team and noticed he totally missed Fox when he covered our CB depth. This is a guy who I don't think gets the credit he deserves. He had a few problems getting into the receiver too soon early last season but I thought he fixed that and was playing very well. Problem was he had developed a reputation as hitting early and was getting flagged on what I thought were good plays. Towards the end of tyhe season that seemd to go away though. This guy is a great CB and should get more credit.

He mentions Fox as the starter later in the article. His point I think was that you can make that great starting lineup with all underclassmen. I don't think he meant it as a dig at Fox...although I do agree with your point that Fox is underappreciated.

This is my first post on the site. I've been reading everyone's thoughts this week and have been really impressed by the level of knowledge and class of the postings. That said, I apologize in advance for lowering your standards.

As to Fox, I think he is perfect for us at the boundary corner and the ideal Tressel player. The less we hear about him the better. It means he's doing his job and most of the time he gets it done. I think he'll make a hell of an NFL safety, but in the meantime I'll enjoy knowing he has his side locked down for us for another year.

in re-reading the article, nixon's right. it's focusing on the underclassmen. fraser isn't mentioned either and he'll be a senior along with fox this year. scary how good this defense could/will be.

I didn't realize the focus of MrBucknuts article. Not the first time my reading comprehension has been called into doubt. In any case my point wasn't to rag on Bucknuts for forgetting Fox but to give some credit to a guy who I see as a captain this season and a great player.

I liked this post.

I'm glad some people appreciate Fox. He played pretty well for the most part and I think the defensive scheme always evolved into some sort of prevent D all the time with those guys trying to keep people in front of them all the time. Gamble seemed bent on living up to his own pre-season hype all season long and became sort of a head case up until the end of the season when he just said "Screw it, I'm gonna just help the team" sort of thing now. I'm not telepathic or anything but that was just my impression from watching him play into overtime versus Purdue. Braylon kind of smacked him around real good up in Ann Arbor and I thought that was good for him, to sort of remind him that it wasn't some beauty contest.

Like was mentioned earlier, Fox wasn't really heard from too often, either way and this was good. He just seems like a great selfless (Tressel) type of player who's game for doing what's best for the team. He's fast. He can leap, obviously, and he will get a shot at the NFL.

We always heard that the defense was going to be "in place to make plays" but it always seemed that they were just preventing the other team from catching up all the time. I sincerely want this to change and for Snyder to sack up and use what are arguably the most talented (arguably inserted for trolling UM-Miami, that is- fan) players on defense in the collegiate universe. For this to really be possible he needs to allow the talented Mr. Fox to make plays just like he did when Penn State picked on him last year. Sit these guys on the island and let the rest of the guys get turnovers. I was at the Spring Game and our young guys allllllllll look like studs with incredible speed, skill and aggressiveness. The only thing they lack is gametime experience. They'll make mistakes but they're too talented to not be able to make up for them.

Just my two cents.

Looks like you're off to a good start to me. Welcome aboard!

Thanks for the welcome, guys. As for Fox, I think many people are still fixated on the Illinois game a couple of years ago. I don't think Fox played all that badly, especially considering he was up against Lloyd who was a top-rate college receiver. The Dantonio quote above is exactly right. You don't need a corner who makes 15 big hits a game. You want one who won't bite on an out-and-up (Gamble at Wisconsin) and who will lay the wood when it's necessary.

Cheers
