DB Damon Webb (2017 Cotton Bowl Def MVP, Ottawa Redblacks)

How Urban Meyer and Ohio State have attacked Detroit and infiltrated Michigan pipeline Cass Tech: Buckeyes recruiting

By Ari Wasserman, Northeast Ohio Media Group
November 26, 2013

DETROIT, Mich. – Damon Webb makes his way through the front entrance of Detroit Cass Tech high school, turns left and goes up the stairs toward the gym.

Because he travels up those stairs every day, the collection of more than 10 national flags hanging from the walls just seems to blend in. Sometimes he doesn’t even bother to lift his head.

Then Webb turns to his right and climbs one final set of stairs. Another flag, this one twice as large as the others, always does something to nudge him. This flag, the one that bears the University of Michigan’s large logo, always stands out.

Maybe it catches Webb’s eye because it is bigger. Maybe it is because Webb has to walk directly past it to reach his daily destination. Or maybe it is because Michigan, the team he grew up associating with home, has recently become his most bitter rival.

“Michigan kind of felt like they already had me in the bag,” said Webb, dressed in a black and gray jacket with Ohio State’s logo prominently etched onto the front, during an in-person interview with Cleveland.com last week. “That’s kind of the vibe I was getting (during my recruiting process).”

ALL-DETROIT: Coach Thomas Wilcher helps make Damon Webb latest Cass Tech DB phenom

Damon Webb played six games as a sophomore at U-D Jesuit before transferring to Detroit Cass Tech.

He met football coach Thomas Wilcher and announced he was a wide receiver.

“It was the only position I had ever played,” said the senior bound for Ohio State. “I had been a receiver my whole life.”

Wilcher looked at the young man and had a different plan.

“He says, ‘I’m a wide receiver,’ ” Wilcher said. “I said, ‘Great.’ We started doing drills and stuff. I noticed his athleticism, how quick his feet were.

“I told him you might need to be a defensive back. I told him I had to teach him how to tackle first. I had to teach him how to move his feet.

“He was like, ‘I’m a wide receiver.’ I said, OK, but I told him if he learned how to do the defensive back drills, he’d be the best defensive back in the country because he had great feet.”

Wilcher told him there were as many high school All-America defensive backs from Cass Tech than any position at the school. He could point to Dior Mathis, Delonte Hollowell, Terry Richardson and Jourdan Lewis, to name a few.

“I told him to just trust me,” Wilcher said. “I told him he could be the next great defensive back.”

Webb bought in, Ohio State noticed, and the rest is history, including a state championship Webb took part in a year ago and a tough loss to Novi Detroit Catholic Central in the Division 1 semifinal to end his high school career. He lost three games at Cass Tech.

Love hearing this about incoming DBs. Shutting down elite WRs, Webb is a shutdown corner in every sense of the word. He and marshon, will be studs together on both sides.

5. Damon Webb, CB, Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech Ohio State commit Webb had a few spectacular plays from the cornerback position as well and probably has the best ball skills of any defensive back for the West. He also is one of the most fluid in his back pedal and flipping his hips.

I can't say enough how glad I am to have this kid in this class. He's a stud CB, but also a leader who's not afraid to go up against the best. This kid hasn't been phased one bit by the game, or any camps. Our CBs will certainly be pushed and Coombs will love coaching Damon.
