Darrell Hazell (official thread)

Happy for coach but this is probably one of the crappiest jobs in the MAC. :(

Only because they haven't won. If he can turn Kent into a winner in the next few years He'll move his name to the top of the list for JT's replacement. Kent hasn't had a wholesale coaching change since after the 97 season so it is a stable place to go when you look at other programs that replace their entire coaching staff every 4-5 years.

Ohio was a shitty job too, then Solich took over and has taken them to 3 bowls games. They can't seem to win one, but getting there is half the battle for a MAC team.

Kent actually has decent facilities, is in a great location for recruiting football talent, and has a new AD who obviously made a good decision with this hire. The Flashes were only a game or two below .500 the past few seasons, and if Hazell can improve recruiting even a little they can compete in what is not a really tough conference.

It will be interesting to see how they do in his 1st season: KSU returns just about everybody on offense (except mighty-mite RB Jarvis), but will definitely need to beef up the middle of the defense (NT, 2 LBs, both SFs graduating). Sophomore Spencer Keith is on his way to being one of KSU's most-prolific QBs ever, and Tyshon Goode leads a solid WR corps which has to be thrilled to have Hazell taking over. DL Roosevelt Nix was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman.

I know poaching from within the conference is generally frowned upon, but one guy I like is Kevin Johns from Northwestern. He gets the most out of kids who are really limited athletically and also designed the pass game. Not sure where he grew up but he played college ball at Dayton. Full-time assistant at a BCS conference school before 30, ran recruiting for NW before giving that up to take over passing game duties.

Toledo's Jason Candle is a good young recruiter who has Eric Page and Pierre Garcon to his credit and is a Mt. Union grad.

Kevin would be a great hire. From what I remember from the one year overlap we both were at Dayton and the two years he played football with my brother-in-law, he's a good guy. I believe he's originally from Piqua, OH.

"Most like Tressel of all the assistants" = Tressel's replacement. I can see Fickell also being considered, but after the 2014 season when Tressel retires, I see Hazell becoming our head coach and Fickell the assistant head coach.

Congratulations, coach. Thanks for all of the great years, and for helping to change up the offense in recent years.

I thought he would be gone years ago. It was a blessing keeping him this long, and this should be just enough time to prove himself as a successor. If the challenges of Kent State extend that turnaround process by a few years, that means more years of JT

I love Candle. He has a bright future as a college coach. I'd love to see Tressel get him. He also has coordinating experience at Mount Union, which would help. He is also known as one of the best recruiters in the MAC.

Besides the mention of P.J. Fleck as a replacement in a newspaper article, another bit of evidence supporting the possibility of Fleck leaving Rutgers is that Rutgers recently hired Jeff Hafley, Pitt's DB coach as of a few weeks ago. He was hired despite there being no known openings on the Rutgers staff. Although he was a defensive coach at Pitt, he coached offense previously, and was a wide receiver in college. If nothing else, it is an awfully interesting coincidence.

Certainly possible, but if Fickell is still around, and get's passed over, he more than likely takes a HC job elsewhere.
