Pass Rush
Our pass rush lacked, yes. Worthington will be sweet, yes. His videos showed him running down opposing running backs via the backfield to the opposite side of the field in his San Francisco 49er looking uniform that was cool, yes.
Point of note to the o-linemen posting in this thread with their mutual agreement (generally, as I skimmed mostly) regarding their PREFERENCE to blocking tall DLs... note: Imagine blocking a crazy ASS ALONZO SPELLMAN. I heard Warrick Dunn in an interview with somebody on the radio not too long ago on local radio here (last season) and they asked him what player scared him more than any other player in his career. The interviewer postulated that somebody else had mentioned, perhaps Eddie George, that Alonzo Spellman was the absolute scariest player they'd ever played against, and Warrick instantly agreed that he was one not to be trifled with in the least(a shame really)- but back on point- let me be one to speculate that the DLs you faced were probably not on par with any of the amazing athletes that OSU is bringing to fall camp this year so these comparisons are certainly apples to plums in this instance.
Our coaches saw a need after last season and went out and recruited to shore up that need even with redshirts waiting in the wings. We want tall, nasty, crazy, physical freaks at the corners of the line. That much is obvious.
I worry more about that little tear drop that Stocco was able to drop in over Carpenter's and Shlegal's heads on a consistent basis. I worry about us bringing pressure off the edge and flipping Basenez making our ends and safeties look silly with his stupid little pass option right, but mostly left- the game he had working with three receivers toward pressure. I pulled my hair out, especially having to listen to that son of a bitch Andre Ware call color and spew again and again that we weren't close to being the 6th best team in the country (we could've been coached up better IMO). Tressel even said as he walked on or off the field, "We're not the 6th (or 3rd or whatever it was at the time) best team in the country (this was Tressel pissed)."
More than that I worry about the absolute ineffectiveness of our team as a whole versus Iowa. I don't even know where to begin with what went wrong there. We don't seem to ever talk about that game but that should be the game that we talk about the most. Personally, it hurts because my uncle is a Hawkeye that holds 20 season tickets and holds an open invitation out to me every single time they play and even when they don't play (I never go because I'm lazy and now my wife, and more recently my son are my excuses), like when we were together Thanksgiving 2002, I have to deal with his SHIT--- He's my grandmother's brother, and I'm his favorite from our side of the family (we both love Scotch)- so I'm always nice-- but I digress.
Flipping Iowa. I want that game. I want us to tear little Tater tot to bits and pick him off a whole bunch of times (and smash him). There's no way their lines are that good next season... but jesus, we were schemed to death by them and this Beckman guy definitely delivers me a little peace of mind because I think he's the new real D- Coordinator this season who can deal with a little dirt and the eye, throw it over the shoulder type of bullshit offenses every BIG MAC, BIG 12 and Auburn team seem to be running these days.
