Cure for a lack of pass rush.

I dunno about you guys but I see D'Andrea being pretty much a 3rd down linebacker this year used for coverage. Lets remember even if we do run a 3-4 at time I believe our linebackers will be this OLB's-Hawk/FREEMAN with our Insides being Carpenter/Schlegal.

D'Andrea is my over all favorite buckeye but an ACL is something you just dont' bounce back from look at Greg Jones, and Frank Gore they did little to nothing their first years back. I think it would be crazy for us to expect the world out of D'Andrea. I think we can all just hope he returns good as new, but you can't like the past records of ACL tears.

Also Worthington wouldn't be good inside becuase he simply wouldn't be able to get the leverage on players that is needed. His long reach would be awesome in seperation from the Tackle if he played End. I like blitzing the secondary because we have such good linebackers that I'm confident in their pass protection as well. I mean if you blitz your secondary and then you act like you're going to do it again on the next play and instead here comes Hawk/Carpenter/Schlegal/Freeman/D'andrea thats a bit of a problem for the opposing Offenses.

I agree that for us to get to the roses we need to be able to get to the QB on a much more consistant basis but before we start talking about moving players, changing from the 4-3 to the 3-4 let's talk about who we have @ their current positions in the current scheme.
Some observations / thoughts / opinions from some folks w/ some access would be appreciated on this topic...Alan / Nevada / HH / grad anyone else w/ some sort of access.

Richardson- heave heard he has bulked up some. haven't heard alot about how he preformed during spring & if he has taken the next step. have heard he played a good spring game & was able to pressure the QB & play in the backfield. Anyone heard how he is progressing? Will he be able to be the DE we need that can play consistently on the other side of the line of scrimmage & be disruptive? Anyone heard how he is progressing?

Barrow- I had heard he has been showing flashes of being the guy during spring. Haven't heard how he performed during the scrimmage or spring game. Seems a little on the small side but we need someone to bring the pressure of the edge? Anyone heard how he is progressing?

Gohlston- I have been anxiously waiting for Vernon to arrive. Great athlete that was raw coming out of high school. Great speed. Is his technique where it need's to be? Haven't heard much about his performance this spring other than that he is a physical freak. Anything coming out of spring on his progress?

IMHO we need one of the three to develop & be disruptive, able to play consistently on the other side of the line of scrimmage. Doesn't have to be Will Smith but has to be someone who can consistently get pressure from the edge & someone the D need's to account for in passing situations by either doubling or keeping a back in to help.

This position & P are the biggest ? & keys to the season IMHO. Thoughts?

I think the 3-4 puts better athletes on the field. LB is OSU's deepest postion and the 3-4 gets more of them on the field. Also, the move of Patterson to DE might telegraph a move to a significant amount of 3-4. Patterson is a penetrator as a DT but not an edge rusher. He is more in the mold of a 3-4 DE who is quick and can stalemate 2 OL (or split them to force the RB to make a move) against the run. OSU can put 3 DL on the field to hold the front against 5 OL and create rushing lanes for the multi-talented LBs. Using the 3-4 in certain situations is the best way to get the best athletes on the field and pressure the QB from an area that is difficult for the QB to read before the snap.

i can't get into specifics on players, but i believe both lines will be much improved over last year.....for one, there is much more depth on both sides.....

both lines being improved not only helps in a game, but helps in practice as well...

I agree. I think what you are seeing is more due to improvement along the offensive line than it is regression along the DL.

It's also partially due to the limited formations and schemes the D is running in these scrimmages.

Funman..good thoughts bro. I can see value in your points, but I do not agree with the 3-4. For one thing, it requires a dominant NG...just not someone to take up space, but someone to demand a double team and still be able to wreak havoc inside. If the NG is not sufficient, the LBs are in trouble. I'm not sure if we have that player...

I just see more value in a solid rotation of DL in the 4-3 with the occasional 3-4 look...players like Barrow and Gholston make that look very possible without package subs. The zone blitz out of the 4-3 is devastating and is my personal preference.

Good discussion all around.

Alan said is that the guys we have will be "fine." Maybe, maybe not. Again, they were not "fine" last year, they were mediocre.
I also don't remember Alan saying that we would be "fine" last year. In fact. The D-line was a major concern last year. With the amount of action from this team that Alan's reported here. I would say that "we'll be fine" means, we'll be fine.

What about Ted Ginn, Jr.? He can do everything!!!

I do like the thought of getting 4 LB's in there occasionally, but for all the reasons mentioned earlier, it just doesn't seem all that practical to institute as an every-play scheme.

Alan, I'm just dying to know that we will have one from Richardson, Gohlston or Barrow that has stepped up, improved & will be able to be a disruptive force coming from the edge. Don't have to know who, just that someone has emerged.:wink2:

Also... keep in mind how well Michigan's line did after they switched to a 3-4..

What are they running this year? I think they switched back to a 4-3 again.

As osugrad21 pointed out above, you need a dominant NG to run the 3-4 and Michigan has Gabe Watson. When you have an athletic 6'4" 340 lb lineman, you have a dominant NG.
