Wash me
On the rare chance that someone here knows something about ancient Egypt:

My grandfather left me a (presumedly) Egyptian tablet when he died.

Photographs of the tablet and the weird (though unrelated, I assume) book-cover it came in are attached. Any insight as to the origin of the tablet, the meaning, etc. would be much appreciated. I assume it is a meaningless stolen/bought tablet from Egypt or a replica thereof, evenso, I want to know its possible history.

Thanks.

I ran this by a friend at the Carlos Museum at Emory. His translation is as follows:

"Michigan still sucks."

This is honestly one of the very few times I have laughed out loud while reading this board. :)

I posted on some weird egypt-freaks board and they are checking it out for me. I doubt it has worth, but I am curious as to its origins.

FWIW, Kinch, I think it's pretty cool. Keep us posted on the appraisal.

I'm no Egyptologist, but I've done some reading about the ancients. Anyway, that tablet certainly looks authentic, but I've never seen a heiroglyph of a falcon with the pharoah hat on.

Have you heard any family lore as to where he got it? If not, I suggest asking aunts/uncles or better yet great aunts/uncles about it.

Pretty cool anyway. So long as it's not cursed....

edit: nm I found one here:

Okay, here's the key to deciphering the tablet:

Good luck! :p

Hehe seriously though, that thing does look authentic and could be worth some $$ to collectors. Though donating or loaning it to a museum would be cool too - can you imagine the little sign near the display? "From the Collection of Kinch" hehe

I did a search on Yahoo for "falcon hat pharoah" and found a painting that is supposed to be about Isis and Horus. Horus is the falcon wearing the hat. Although I believe he is supposed to be a man with a falcon's head, this seems to be another way that he is depicted.

I always find the following useful when deciphering my hieroglyphics.

rosettaSTONE.jpg

For those of you who don't know, it's the Rosetta Stone.

I saw it in London last year, it's pretty freaking neat!
