Despite the fact that "experts" expected a rise in cases to occur immediately in states re-opening from lockdowns--especially in those whose governors have issued blanket lockdown releases--those spikes just haven’t happened.

High-risk states are seeing fewer new coronavirus cases

Cases in point: Florida 14% reduction in cases, Georgia 12% reduction, Texas 9% reduction.

while I tend to side with you more often than not, why are news outlets reporting today that several countries that have reopened are now reinforcing lock down orders including Wuhan Province?

trust me, I want this to be over. but i have damn idea who or what to believe anymore. :(

Considering states just reopened and new cases are a lagging indicator because of incubation and test turnaround times, I will be more interested in seeing data towards the end of May. If cases are still going down, that will really mean something.

Critical elective surgeries are being opened up here Monday. Surgeons demanded my son (an OR nurse) be returned immediately... He was temporarily reassigned when elective surgeries were shut down.. has been working only Covid+ for 7 weeks/14 hr days... put more people into body bags than you'd ever want you kid to experience...

I'm fuckin screaming happy...

From the article:

South Korea last week rescinded a go-ahead for bars and clubs to reopen after a spike in cases, hours after officials announced the lifting of previous social distancing restrictions and the start of a “new everyday life with the coronavirus.”
How can a spike occur within hours due to lifting of restrictions? I've been posting about how we're been on a downward trend for weeks now and the usual suspects here claim that there is a 2-3 week lag so we can't say that lifting of restrictions isn't causing an increase in cases. And they blame a spike in cases that occurs with hours of lifting restrictions on those actions?

In the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the pandemic first emerged, authorities on Tuesday ordered the testing of all 11 million inhabitants after a cluster of six new infections emerged, five weeks after the city had apparently rid itself of the disease.
Testing has been ordered...nothing about restrictions being put back in to place.

Germany, which is widely regarded as the model in Europe of a balanced coronavirus response, is warning that some areas may have to reinstate restrictions after localized outbreaks caused a rise in cases.
Note the bolded words. A localized rise--not spike--in cases in some places may make them reinstate some restrictions. This tells me that they are keeping a close eye on things and will take actions as needed.

And oh yeah, it's fucking WaPo, so...

I don't know the answer to the first question. As for the rest, you have incomplete numbers for 2-3 weeks, because that's how long it can take for symptoms to set in, after which time you can finally go in to get tested, and then await your test results.

I just don't understand the absolute clown show in the US in response to this pandemic. I am living in Africa. Africa. About one-fifth of the population living in urban slums, cheek by jowl. The country geared up four weeks ago. Here is what has happened.
  • About one-fifth of the population have been examined and screened by trained healthcare staffers. The examinations identified about 4% of those examined who required coronavirus tests and lab work.
  • The confirmed infections in South Africa is about 181 people per million.
  • The US, the UK, Spain, Italy and Singapore have between 2 400 and 4 600 coronavirus cases per million people.
The US is less than 5% of the world's population, yet it has 28% of COVID-19 related deaths and 32% of COVID-19 cases.

It is not possible to argue that these things are being over-reported in the US because, as I illustrate above, South Africa is exceeding the US along these lines. If you had told me twenty years ago that this was going to happen, I would have been willing to bet everything I owned that the US would be at less than half the incidence rate for deaths and infections.

That several of you seem to want to wish this away or claim it is not as bad as it seems is beyond me. Please take care of yourselves. Please.

Edit: And who cares what Greta Thunberg might have to say about this. Your news service from the left and right is absolutely appalling.

IMHO it boils down to a lack of leadership at the Federal level. Not to go political, but you can blame Trump and you can blame Congress both. It’s a total shit show at the Federal level. Follow that down to the State level and it’s more of the same. Yes, there are some States Leadership doing good things, but it is inconsistent at best. Now you have various levels of government coming up with their own rules.

Then you have the media, all of which have their own agendas. It’s become increasingly harder to wade through the stream of information coming out and decipher what may or may not be valid.

it’s an abomination that the US is unable to produce the necessary masks, tests, drugs, ventilators, etc. that we need to fight this. What happened to the ventilator that Dyson designed and built in ~10 days?

It’s a total shameful clusterfuck...

And yes Fuck Greta, she can piss off...
