The rate may be higher but look at the bigger picture

400 some odd deaths but the ICU numbers are flat or declining. They haven't done irreparable financial, emotional and psychological harm to millions of their population that will be a drain on the system for generations to come.

They basically followed option #2 from the Imperial College study and it appears to have been the smart decision.

Fair point.

OTOH, if it was that easy to expect humans, in this country in particular, to be highly disciplined in what they do, we would have tried that too. Actually, we did in some states, and watched morons congregate for spring break, get sick, and travel back to their communities with it. A Sweden option would never work in this country. Ever.

But this.

But this.

Those morons wouldn't be under any kind of lockdown in Sweden though would they?

The missing part is the ability to test as all have been in some form of agreement on since this started. If we could test we could quarantine the sick and go about life.

As far as the comments regarding the economy and no big deal on that side of it, well I strongly disagree.

The airline industry is all but shutdown. Same for automotive, real estate, hospitality and B&M retail.

We are well beyond the local barbershop here. The impact on these people's lives is staggering and will be long term.

I don't see it getting a fair consideration in the horrible calculus of economy vs mortality.

It’s a respiratory disease, so only OH8CH is vulnerable.

I don't know if you're actually intending all of that for me, but all I was doing was agreeing with @Bucklion that Swedes are more likely to behave appropriately when ASKED and more likely to generally take into account the needs of and respect others than Americans are, which makes it less likely that their approach would be as effective here. They also have a lot fewer underlying health issues than we do at a population level (e.g., about 20% vs. 36% obesity), which likely will reduce their fatality rates.

and I wouldn't want it any other way
Well, it's interesting since you generally seems to be a small government guy. Believe it or not, I actually am too despite it not showing much on this thread. But at a very fundamental level my view is that the main reason why government is necessary is to protect the general population from assholes (e.g., brigands, con men, rapists, foreign invaders, corporate sociopaths, etc.) and that if you have a strong culture that discourages assholishness, government can be smaller and less forceful. Here, business. media, demagogues/con men, the political parties and many elected officials, and the parasite economy that feeds off of the intersection of business and interest groups and government have developed a co-dependency that needs to dumb down the average person and promote assholishness to justify mission creep and increasing concentrations of power. Institutions that are supposed to check each other instead divide and conquer the general population through fear and disgust triggers and then collaborate to divvy up the spoils among themselves.

Anyway, if TLDR, the point is just that if you want small government you probably want to discourage assholishness.
