Well damn. Friends’ from college dad is in the ICU on a ventilator.

Very successful family here in Indy. Grew up playing basketball against these twins. Oddly enough, ran into them 3 weeks ago at the [one and only] Big Ten Tournament night. Talked about how crazy this whole thing was but agreed on the precautions at the time (banning fans). They had a family trip planned and canceled. Now hoping they get a chance to re-schedule some day.

who gives a fuck? We are all gonna die. How might involve a few more minutes of pain than another but in the end we all go out the same we we cam in, alone.

deal with it

sorry, just had enough of this over blown fear of what we should know is coming from day one on this earth

fucking soccer moms have taken over the world.

(maybe should be in @saw's thread)

I'm dealing with it just fine. In fact, I'm still going to work every day.

I found a nurse's first-hand perspective interesting. If you and the Hawaiian genius don't want to read it no one is fucking forcing you to do it.

Serious question: If Celebrity hadn't cancelled, would you have gone anyway?

Good question. It was cancelled 10 days before the start and I hadn't made a definite decision on that yet. As days went by I was leaning more and more to not go; however, since I was still actually agonizing over it I can't give you a definite yes or no reply. I was booked on back to back cruises (17 March & 1 April) and once the 1st one was cancelled I decided fairly quickly that I wasn't going on the 2nd one (which wasn't cancelled yet) either. Fortunately to get a full refund on it, it was cancelled a few days later too.

Another comment. You would like to think that companies in the travel business (i.e. like Celebrity Cruises) has your best interest heart and wouldn't put you in harms way; however, it appears that the primary reason Celebrity cancelled this cruise was just because India was refusing the ship entry into their ports (i.e. not necessarily your "safety and well being"). See their cancellation notice:

Dear Guest,

We have some urgent information to provide regarding your upcoming Dubai and India cruise aboard Celebrity Constellation®

As we monitor global developments related to the coronavirus, our priority remains the health and safety of our guests and crew, as well as providing amazing vacation experiences. each morning our executive team reviews daily updates from the CDC and WHO regarding the situation.

We have just been advised that the Government of India will no longer allow entry to cruise ships. We have therefore made the difficult decision to cancel the Constellation voyage of 3/17/20. Up until today we did not intend to cancel this voyage, however, in an abundance of caution we feel this is the best decision for the health and safety of all. This decision was not made lightly as we value your vacation time and want to ensure you have the best experience possible on a Celebrity Cruise.

In order to compensate you for this cancellation, all booked guests will receive a full refund to their original method of payment and a 25% Future Cruise Credit (FCC).

If you pre-booked any shore excursions through Celebrity Cruises, you’ll receive a full refund to the original form of payment. Guests with independent arrangements should contact their tour operators as soon as possible. If you pre-purchased any beverage, internet, specialty dining or other onboard packages, you will also receive a full refund to your original form of payment.

Guests with air travel and hotel booked through Flights by Celebrity will be refunded automatically. Guests with independent air arrangements need to contact their air carriers directly to make all required cancellations. For any airline flight change fees incurred, you may receive up to $300 per person reimbursement. In order to receive reimbursement, you must send us a copy of the air change fees assessed.

We know how important your vacation time is and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience of this cancellation. Your safety and well-being are our highest priority. We hope to welcome you aboard soon for an amazing Celebrity Cruise vacation.

Sincerely,

Celebrity Cruises

I found a nurse's first-hand perspective interesting. If you and the Hawaiian genius don't want to read it no one is fucking forcing you to do it.

First, you have to make a Hawaiian Punch guy meme for Mili or risk losing the chance forever

and second, I wasn’t busting your balls. Sorry if it came across that way. Just espousing my general philosophy on dying.

I get a nurses perspective every day when my wife comes home so maybe a little tone deaf.

For starters, you’d have to pause it internationally for it to work. Not happening.

1. Everyone's in the same boat, so would work.
2. We are the world's economy. The USD is the de facto world currency. If we say we're not paying interest for a month, we're not paying interest for a month.
3. Even just covering the intl interest payments would be a lot less than the $4 Trillion slush fund and $2 Trillion printed by the Fed, the overwhelming majority of which is going straight into the hands of people who don't need it, didn't do a single thing to earn it, and has nothing whatsoever to do with the issue we're in.

My point being if we had the ability to flex into testing at scale we wouldn't have had to nuke the economy to save lives.

the rest is much more nuanced and I'm just too tired to take it line by line

respect your views and opinion though bro, even if I don't agree with all of it

but that's all of us though isn't it? Only God/Woody and Kirk Herbstreit are perfect.

I outlined earlier what in my imo were the 8 factors that got South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, et. al. off the hook. At least so far... a second wave is coming for them.
A manufacturing base on home soil, not dependent on China, is definitely one of those factors (which Sing does not have), coupled with strong border control (where Sing rebounds).

However, if you live in a country where the overwhelming majority are paycheck-to-paycheck, have no sick days, and either have useless high deductible insurance or no insurance ... it's inevitable. Somebody will get it. They can't stop working and provide for their family - or even just eat.
Imagine all the uber drivers... they get a soar throat and pass it to everyone in the car. Recycling the air from front to back (this is suspected to be major factor in the cruise ship outbreaks).
Then all those people go home. Give it to their family. Go to work, give it to their coworkers. A couple weeks later, there's 100 people showing up to the ER because 1 slipped through the cracks.
Or the grocery store gets it, but they don't have benefits. So they keep going to work... and infect random people in the store.
This is the American work culture. We work when sick. If you don't... you might not have a job to return to.

Let's say we had 100% testing. So you test those 100 who were tied to the Uber driver... and all their connections.
What happens when half those people refuse to stop working? Maybe they get fired. Then you end up with a bunch of fired diseased people on the streets unable to pay rent or buy food.
We're back to the draconian measures. Are you going to put them in a concentration camp like China? Force them into a Hospital at the point of a gun and hand them a $100k bill with bankruptcy paperwork on the way out?

For countries that have their shit together and didn't hollow out the Middle Class for the past 40 years, they haven't needed to shut down their economy.
Strong testing and border control are important... but if it's the only line of defense, you're just delaying Patient 0. Japan has hardly done any testing - leaning hard into border control and their societal advantages. But they have one of the best healthcare systems, people routinely go in for any cough, and they have a work culture that encourages sick days, takes normal influenza seriously... plus a mfr base for medical equipment. Every household and apartment already had a private stockpile of masks and sanitizer. Every workplace with a stockpile of shoe covers and slippers. And a hygienic obsession that's literally religious (Shinto has some strange ideas about "uncleanliness" when things are normal, but it makes a lot of sense in times like this... def some kind of blood disease in Japan's ancient past)

But we're not in that position.
This disease is exposing all the rot at the core of what's left after 40 years of NeoLibs and NeoCons selling the country off piecemeal to one Lobbyist at a time.
