Contest XV: Where Am I?

ScriptOhio

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
You probably won't see any posts from me the next couple of weeks. ....Wait for cheering to subside.... I'll be on a vacation. Since a lot of you like trivia, contests, and/or guessing games; I am having another contest to guess where I am going. The first person to guess the correct place that I will be at on Tuesday, 9 September 2008 wins greenies, 25,000 vDollars, and a gift. If nobody guesses correctly the closest guess (geographically) wins.

Note: The vDollars and gift are due to the generous support of Deety (again) who is willing to help on awarding the vDollars and buying the gift. The gift is contingent on still being available via BP's software.

Thank you Deety,

for the larger (25,000 vDollars prize).

The clues are in the form of pictures:

This contest is actually a "Where will I be?". I may have some internet access so there is a possibility of some additional posts (declare winner, another hint, etc.) from me. The first person to guess the correct place wins. The prizes will be awarded shortly thereafter after I get back: Sunday, 14 September 2008. If nobody guesses correctly, then the guess that happens to be the closest (geographically) to the actual country wins. Other unique, novel, funny, and/or close guesses may also get greenies. As before, whoever can ID all pictures and explain how they are a clue will get additional greenies.

The usual rule still applies. You can guess as often as you like; however, one guess per post. Without this rule I'm sure someone would get the idea to cut and paste an entire atlas listing every city/state/country known to man and say one of these places.

Ancient legends claim?!

The statue of Helios isn't a bit of mythology you know.

The Colossus is something that was a real statue. At no other time have I ever heard anyone state that it was a myth. BTW I consider myself fairly educated in Greek & Roman History as it was my passion throughout my schooling. It was destroyed by an earthquake and Rhodes didn't have the resources at the time to rebuild it.

Ptolemy (forget which one) offered to finance reconstruction but they decided against rebuilding it upon counsel from the Delphic Oracle.

I've never heard that before but that would seem to make more sense then my information. I read before that the earthquaake that destroyed the statue also destroyed much of the city and it was first priority to rebuild the city.

Well looks like I need to brush up my knowledge a little.

The inaugural Amica Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island will take place on July 13, 2008. The course will utilize a variety of Rhode Island's scenic areas, including Narragansett, the picturesque communities along State Road 102 and downtown Providence.

The swim will be held in the protected waters off Roger Wheeler State Beach in Narragansett. Water temperatures are expected to be 68-72 degrees F. The majority of the bike course encompasses the quiet, scenic communities of Exeter, West Greenwich, Coventry, North Scituate and Johnston. The bike route finishes in downtown Providence, with the bike-to-run transition located at Waterplace Park. The two-loop run course takes athletes through the historic East Side of Providence, tree-lined Blackstone Boulevard, Brown University campus and downtown Providence's business district. The race finishes with a backdrop of the State Capitol and Providence Place Mall.
