I was on a different team ot tOSU, and even we got drug tested. We all knew that after August everything was off limits. We had no possible ways to make millions and we still abided by the rules. If this is true, this is such poor judgement, and puts, what couldve been the best defense EVER, at risk.

Same Here. I was in a minor sport in the early 90's, with no scholarship money. The Athletic Dept. would pull me in every once in a while to pee in a cup (I think twice in four years). They would usually call two days before and tell you to be at French Field House at 7am the following day, or the day after.

I was a good boy, so I didn't have anything to worry about. A couple of my teamates got busted for Pot. The first positive was coaches discretion (usually a very long talking to). Second positive was mandatory suspension. If they caught you once, you would be put into heavy rotation. They've probably updated their policies since 1995.

Although this is not a funny topic, I do have a funny story.

When I was getting tested, an O-Lineman was at the urinal next to me. After about 30 minutes of Bashful bladder, he had to move into a stall to do double duty in order to provide his specimin. Trainers were right in front of the stall, with the door open laughing their asses off.

As long as you don't smoke on gameday, it won't be a problem at all as far as performance goes. They certainly aren't the only ones on the team who smoke a little weed...they're just the ones who are stupid enough to get caught.

Nothing at all? Cardiovascular fitness and smoking don't exactly go hand in hand.

Consider the thought process that is involved with making that type of decision. There are some athletes that won't even touch "unhealthy" food for various performance reasons. Yet here is a starter on a team trying to redeem it's failures over the past two seasons lighting it up. Not exactly a championship mindset.

Disagree with it not effecting performance. Now, I'll admit it doesn't effect an athlete to the point of not being able to compete, look at say, Ricky Williams.. he's a balls-to-the wall stoner, and he's still a damn good tailback.

But to say it doesn't effect performance so long as your not smoking on gamedays is incorrect IMO.. take it from a former athlete/smoker.

I really don't have a problem with people who smoke weed. Heck, I've smoked my share and probably more. But there are times in life when you just can't do it. I spent 4 years in the military and we were tested fairly frequently (at least 2 or 3 times a year it seemed). I never once even got close to smoking because getting tested was always a good possibility. If these kids know they are going to get tested but don't know when, why smoke the stuff? It's like playing russion roulette given the level of drug testing that these guys must be subjected to. Do it enough and your going to get burned.

At least there is plenty of time between now and September to make adjustments and these are positions where we are relatively deep. But first and foremost, hopefully by the staff coming down hard on these kids, it will serve as a lesson to others on the team who are tempted to toke it up and there will be less problems in the future (especially mid-season when it really screws things up).
