  • With only one more game to go (the BCS Nat'l Championship) I thought it would be fun to look back at the records of the conferences since the inception of the BCS.

SEC (13-5 overall) Standard Bearer (Florida 5-1, LSU 2-0) Dog (Bama 0-2)
PAC 10 (9-5) Standard Bearer (USC 6-1) Dog (Stanford, UCLA, WSU all 0-1)
Mt. West (3-1) Standard Bearer (Utah 2-0) Dog (TCU 0-1)
WAC (2-1) Standard Bearer (Boise St. 2-0) Dog (Hawaii 0-1)
Big East (6-6) Standard Bearer (Miami Fl 3-1, WVU 2-0) Dog (Cinci 0-2)
Big Ten (10-11) Standard Bearer (OSU 5-3, Whisky 2-0) Dog (Scum 1-3, Illini 0-2)
Big 12 (7-9) Standard Bearer (Texas 3-0) Dog (Oklahoma 2-5)
ACC (2-10) Standard Bearer (None) Dog (FSU 1-5, VT 1-2)
Independant (0-3) Dog (Notre Dame 0-3)

You know what I see there?

I see a conference that's been to 21 BCS games...

10-11 record isn't the best...but it sure is sayin' something...

Its saying something about the other BCS conferences not named the SEC if its saying anything at all.

    13 out of 18
    5-0 in NC games
Chance to add 1 more Thursday night (although I don't think they will)
    Unreal

And the media still rides our ass about our "BCS woes" whilst not uttering a fucking peep about Oklahoma.

Ramzy had a pretty good article on BN about this topic...

Tuesday Morning Delirium ?€“ Will of the People | Football Article

Case in point: Note this ESPN headline which perfectly captures the ongoing narrative perpetuated by the sports media:
"Ohio State ends BCS struggles, captures first Rose Bowl win since '97."
That fits in nicely with the story that's been propagated about Ohio State football ever since Florida snuffed out the Buckeyes' 2006 season, which somehow reset the balance of time and established January 2007 as Year One. A similarly truthful headline deficient in even medium-term memory would be, "Tebow Leaves Heisman Ceremony Empty-Handed Yet Again."

Another route this Ohio State headline writer from above could have taken, while maintaining 100% accuracy:
"Ohio State ups BCS record to 5-3, Rose Bowl winning streak at two."
but that's only interesting to Ohio State fans, and Ohio State fans are already pleased with the outcome, they're already reading the story and they're already looking for more like it. The story that attracts outsiders is that of breaking free from the clutches of futility, flinging the proverbial monkey off the train, triumphing after (three) years of endless sorrow.
