I was assuming he'd already tried hitting the computers on the side.

OK - Upgrading a laptop HD is not a simple screwdriver project. It isn't much more difficult, but it is easier to screw up due to the close confines, limited working space and the ease with which other sensitive components may be harmed. The cases are pretty tricky to get apart and you don't want them damaged right? Plus, the form factors for one laptop may be very different from another - you absolutely need to know that the HD ordered will fit into the space within the case. Most will be OK, but, you must check this.
I'd dig around for a user's group forum with specific experience upgrading the internals of your specific model for guidance.

Actually IMO laptop HDD are typically even easier to swap out than a desktop drive.

Almost all laptop hard drives will be accessible without getting into the case itself. Typically there will be one or two screws to remove and then the drive/caddy will slide free.

You remove the drive from the caddy (typically 2-4 screws on the side/bottom) and swap in the new drive and then slide the entire assembly back into the laptop.

Some laptops will have a proprietary adapter on the back of the HDD that will also need to be swapped (essentially it is just a pin to card edge adapter).

A standard height 2.5" form factor drive will work in just about every modern laptop. There is also some drives that are slightly taller (12mm vs 8mm I believe) than normal that will NOT work in most laptops but they are few and far between.

If you give me the model and manufacturer of your machine I (or someone else here no doubt) can walk you through the process step by step.

Chances are the manufacturer will also have a diagram on how to swap the drive on their support page.

Yeah well ... :p

I remember trying to the upgrade RAM in brand spanking new 2nd Gen iMacs (the ones with the LCD on a stalk sticking out of a half globe).

The second set of DIMM slots were on the back side of the board and couldn't be accessed without breaking some sort of epoxied seal and voiding the warranty!!

Idiots.

I recently got a Dell Vostro 200 at work. It came with XP Pro. The last two days I've come to turn it on in the morning and the power light has been flashing on the front. Pressing the power button, unplugging the power cord, etc. does nothing to stop the flashing. I've found the only thing I can do to stop it is to remove every cord on the back of the computer. After I do that and re-attach everything the computer powers on.

Anyone have an idea what's going on?

Well if it keeps flashing after you've unplugged the power cord it is obviously possessed.

Contact a priest immediately.

Seriously though you stated the power light was flashing, is it Blue or Amber when it flashes?

Call Dell and talk to the techie in Sri Lanka. My laptop power light will slowly flash when it's in power save mode. Try looking at this setting in Display Properties/Screen saver/power.

Dells seem to have this bad habit of battery or power supply issues on their laptops. Not all of em, but it seems like if something breaks, that is what breaks.

And as far as the mac comment.........you can upgrade it very easily, but it serves no earthly purpose, so what's the point of upgrading?

It was blue and yes, it did freak me out a little. :lol

For some reason the power scheme was set up for Portable/Laptop. I switched it to Home/Office Desk and it hasn't done it since. Not sure if that was the problem or not but so far so good.

Oh, cut the bleeding heart crap, will ya? We've all got our switches, lights, and knobs to deal with, Nutty. I mean, down here there are literally hundreds and thousands of blinking, beeping, and flashing lights, blinking and beeping and flashing - they're *flashing* and they're *beeping*. I can't stand it anymore! They're *blinking* and *beeping* and *flashing*! Why doesn't somebody pull the plug!
