  • I thought this would be an interesting thread.

I was just wondering which football program do you think is the most similar to your program over the past 100 years, 50 years or whatever time period you want to compare.

I think that Michigan compares to Texas in a lot of ways. They both had some seasons where they struggled but are two of the most consistent programs over time. They are top 2 in wins. Texas has 2 Heisman winners with Michigan having 3. They both have 30+ conference titles. They both haven't had many national titles. Of course I'm not including the Michigan titles pre ww2. Texas has 3 AP titles and Michigan has 2. I may be biased but they both have nice uniforms and trademarks that are unique to college football. The 70s were good decades to both teams. Texas won a national championship in 1970 and had 6 conference titles. Michigan won 7 conference titles and had 9 top 10 finishes.

Michigan basketball is more like UNLV. Not great basketball programs but from the late 80s to mid 90s they were good. They both got in trouble with the NCAA. They both made several Final Fours and won national championships in 1989 and 1990.

"Championships" were handed out before bowls back then, which never made any sense to me. Texas lost to Notre Dame and Ohio State lost the Rose Bowl, but both had been credited with a title.

Odd thing is, both the Whorns and Buckeyes share the same 1970 title, the MacArthur award, named after General MacArthur of WWII fame.

The Coach Solich show was better than the Coach Callahan show. Neither compare to the Nebraska Football Show with Bo Pelini.

Of course, there's SportsCenter on E..nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.....don't say it...

All programs suck donkey nutz. The only program that matters is:

The thing about 1970 is that was the way it was done. Those were the rules and that's how the UPI (coaches) and, for that matter, National Football Foundation, determined their national champ. It's not exactly crazy talk, either. UNL did have a tie and Texas did thrash the bejesus out of OU. 1970 UNL, while good, wasn't earth-shattering unbeatable like 1971 UNL.

The biggest joke national title is 1973 Alabama (UPI). The coaches had gone to post-bowl voting in 1971 but switched back for a single year in 1973. Thus, the fact that ND beat Bama in the Sugar Bowl that season was of no consequence to the UPI poll.

Personally, I still say Ohio State was the best team that year. 64 points given up and an absolute whupping of USC in the Rose Bowl. Oh well.

These little debates are part of the fun of CFB.

I'm torn on stuff like this. Sure, we can discuss the merits of before- or after-bowl voting 40 years later, but mostly I wish college football was free of stuff like this. I'm a playoff proponent, have been for a long time, so that's probably why I don't appreciate the merits of these discussions that much.

The merits are of debatable value. It's one of he things that I like about CFB, though. I enjoy the history, in part because of its ambiguity.

Playoff? Heh. Where's the fun in that? Heh.

BTW, looking forward to the trip to Lincoln. Even though OSU's chances with the Joe Bausermann Experience aren't so good, it still should be a good weekend.

Well, you mentioned a 50 year time span and also said you weren't counting Michigan titles pre-WWII. Take a look at my signature, its obvious which team is really on a par with tOSU over the last 50 years. Nebraska and tOSU are the two winningest programs over the last 50 years. Post WWII, Nebraska has 5 national titles, tOSU has 6.

Now I might agree with the Michigan-Texas comparison. They both think their [Mark May] don't stink, and have pretty inflated impressions of themselves! :wink2:

Historically, just on the performance of the football program, I think TSUN compares to Tennessee.

And if I had to name a program with a similar track record to tOSU, I'd say Oklahoma.

I agree with the tOSU - OU comparison. Though their record is marked by dynasties and down periods where tOSU is more consistent.

As for TSUN, "just on the perfromance of the football program", I'd have to say Yale.
