Cleveland Gladiators' Otis Amey handles Georgia's defense

Plain Dealer Reporter
Fittingly, the onside kick by the Georgia Force in the final seconds landed in Otis Amey's hands. Amey had earned the right to secure the outcome for the Gladiators in a 73-70 divisional-round victory Monday night in Duluth, Ga.
The Gladiators will play the Philadelphia Soul in the National Conference championship game Saturday in Philadelphia.
Georgia owned a regular-season division title, was coming off a bye week and had home-field advantage. It featured strong offen sive and defen sive lines and a quality quar terback.

Marvin Fong/The Plain DealerBernie Kosar has kept a prominent profile alongside the Gladiators' bench during the team's first year in Cleveland. But the former Browns star has deferred the spotlight to coach Mike Wilpolt and the players as the team surged to the playoffs.
Ron Jaworski said he caught part of Bernie Kosar's playoff pep talk in the Gladiators' locker room on cable television recently. "I gotta write some notes for him," said the voluble "Jaws," the ESPN analyst and top football man with the Philadelphia Soul. Kosar, the president of the relocated and formerly sad-sack Gladiators, has mastered most of the material quickly, pep talks aside. "The game's not going to be won by what's said in the locker room anyway," said Kosar of Saturday's National Conference Arena League Championship Game in Philadelphia.

Comfortable in the Arena: Gladiators roll to semifinal behind indoor lifers Philyaw, Wilpolt

Tracy Boulian/Plain Dealer file photoGladiators quarterback Ray Philyaw has used a strong arm and his Arena League savvy to lead an efficient offense deep into the playoffs.
Think Bill Nelsen. Think Brian Sipe. Think Steve McNair after a few years in the NFL.
That's Ray Philyaw, the 33-year-old quarterback who has carried the surprising Cleveland Galdiators to the Arena Football League's Final Four.
This is his ninth year in the AFL, and he has been knocked down, beat up and physically bounced around from one end of the league to the other. In the process, the 5-foot-10 Philyaw has become one of the league's greatest quarterbacks -- ever.

Ray Philyaw has nine years of experience in the Arena League.
"If Ray were a few inches taller, he'd be an NFL quarterback," said Gladiators coach Mike Wilpolt. "He takes 3 to 5 hits a game that are almost frightening, and gets back up. He is so special."
That opinion also is held by Bernie Kosar, who marvels at Philyaw's grit. When the former Browns' quarterback says a fellow QB is tough, he speaks from his own career history of broken bones, concussions, sprains, strains and other assorted pains.

PHILADELPHIA Matt D'Orazio had himself a good week.
The quarterback engineered a last-second game-winning drive, won the Arena League's Most Valuable Player award, and capped it off by throwing eight touchdown passes to lead the Philadelphia Soul to its first appearance in the Arena Bowl with a 70-35 win over Cleveland on Saturday.
D'Orazio, an Otterbein College graduate, completed 17-of-25 passes for 184 yards. Larry Brackins and Brent Holmes each caught three touchdown passes.
"I'm really fortunate, its not about me though, I'm just happy to be part of this organization," D'Orazio said.
