The Blue Jackets' Nikolai Zherdev looks to make a pass late in the third period against Nashville.

The Blue Jackets were looking for oohs and aahs yesterday in Nationwide Arena out of their experiment with the No. 1 forward line.
This was not the kind of gasp that they had in mind.
Right winger David Vyborny was slammed awkwardly into the boards and lay face-first on the ice in the first period of a 3-1 exhibition loss to the Nashville Predators. He suffered a sprained left knee, but early returns for a recovery appear positive.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Blue Jackets goaltender Pascal Leclaire played just 40 minutes last night, but this time it was by design.
Defenseman Duvie Westcott liked little about his game, yet relished the fact he won't have to wait eight months to play another.
The two Blue Jackets, who missed a combined 107 games to injury last season, returned to the lineup in a 3-1 loss to the Nashville Predators in an exhibition opener in Nationwide Arena.

Blue Jackets: Shelley will make presence felt -- somewhere

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 3:32 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Rick Nash might be the Blue Jackets' franchise player, but enforcer Jody Shelley is the fan favorite.
Shelley's popularity is only part of the reason that coach Ken Hitchcock could face difficult decisions in the 2007-08 season when filling out his lineup card.
A slew of up-and-coming young players and a handful of offseason signings have created a traffic jam of sorts on the Blue Jackets' Nos. 3 and 4 forward lines.

Jackets notebook: Vyborny injury not as serious as feared

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 3:23 AM
By Aaron Portzline

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Blue Jackets had a good day at the rink yesterday, even before they took the ice for the fourth day of training camp.
Right winger David Vyborny, who crumpled to the ice clutching his knee Sunday in a 3-1 exhibition loss to Nashville, was diagnosed with a sprained left knee. He is expected to miss two or three days of camp after a magnetic resonance imaging showed no structural or ligament damage.
"We caught a break," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "He could be back by the weekend."
Vyborny was slammed awkwardly into the boards with 1:37 left in the first period by Nashville forward Martin Erat.

The Columbus Dispatch

CHICAGO -- The Blue Jackets played their third exhibition game in four nights last night, giving them three days of practice and three games in the first six days of training camp.

"Not ideal," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "When you want to teach and you want to get everybody on board with your system and some of the fundamental things we're going to do this season, it's not at all ideal.
"And we're not doing this again."

Blue Jackets 4Blackhawks 3
Boll evil in Hawks' eyes but good in Hitchcock's

By Aaron Portzline

The Columbus Dispatch

CHICAGO -- Here's a name for Blue Jackets fans to keep in mind: Jared Boll.

That's Boll, pronounced bowl, as in, bowl you over.
Boll, a 21-year-old right winger, played wrecking-ball hockey last night and made a clear impact in the Blue Jackets' 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.
"He's in the middle of the action in every game he plays," Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock said. "That's just the way he plays. He's right up in your face."

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Team building takes many forms in the NHL.
Sometimes, it's a well-organized, off-ice gathering. Other times, it's players responding to an adverse circumstance.
Then there are unscripted moments like last night in the Blue Jackets' 4-1 exhibition win over the Buffalo Sabres. Moments when rushing to the aid of an aggrieved teammate can help develop binding ties.

In the wake of a turbulent spring, Blue Jackets majority owner John H. McConnell spent much of the summer in Colorado.

"It was good to be away," McConnell said. "Lots of stuff happened here with the Blue Jackets."
On April 18, the Blue Jackets fired Doug MacLean, the only president and general manager in club history.
Mike Priest, a longtime employee of JMAC, Inc., was quickly named to replace MacLean as president. Two months later, Scott Howson was hired as the new general manager.

New workouts don't stress out Leclaire's knee

Sunday, September 23, 2007 4:09 AM
By Aaron Portzline

The Columbus Dispatch

Blue Jackets goaltender Pascal Leclaire started and finished only five games last season after Ken Hitchcock took over as coach Nov. 23.

Leclaire lost all those games before he had season-ending knee surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee. So he arrived at training camp ready to make a second impression.
Leclaire will make his third start today when the Blue Jackets play host to the Buffalo Sabres in an exhibition game in Nationwide Arena.
