Uh, how do they decide the #1 and #2 teams now? You take the BCS rankings and seed them accordingly...pretty simple, actually. In an 8-team bracket:

#1 vs #8
#2 vs #7
#3 vs #6
#4 vs #5

His point (and mine)was that no matter how you do it, in light of the way this year has gone is no matter how you pick , there will be those who feel slighted. When you get into more losses per team there are more teams that fit that mold ergo, more teams that feel they should be in it.
I agree that just about any format you use could work , just that there will always be dissentors, just as there are now. so what is the difference if we use the voters in place now to decide the way it is done now, or use the same voters to vote teams in using another format? I would dare say that they would vote for the same teams that they do now, keeping in mind that the voters probably don't watch more than x percent of the games now but just vote from what they hear. Or maybe use the group espousd by Cooper as permanent committee to decide. Who knows? but no matter what the powers that be decide on there will always be teams who feel they got the shaft.

And...? Too bad. A #3 team complaining about be slighted from playing in the BCS title game holds a lot more validity than a #9 team being left out of an 8-team playoff.

In fact, to actually use your "in light of the way this year has gone is no matter how you pick , there will be those who feel slighted" argument against you, most of the teams from #3 to #8 have a valid argument for having a chance to play for the national title, and they would indeed get that chance under the playoff system, whereas they don't under the current BCS system.

You are asking how to choose - not whether the method of choosing can please all the teams (and fans) all the time - which no method can achieve.

The fact that there will always be some fanbase or coach or team feeling slighted in no way means that a method selection is poor. Nor, might I add, does it fall out that such controversy would kill any chance of a playoff ever happening.

Again - so what if there are dissenting opinions. That isn't the likeliest cause for the BCS conferences to adopt a playoff.

$$$$$ and Inertia and Politics surrounding the existing Bowl system. These are the primary hurdles to overcome. Selecting the teams is child's play compared to those factors.

That's true, but with a playoff the teams that are truly at the top of the game would all be in, and the controversies would be at a much lower level. If the argument goes from "we deserve to be in the top two" to "we deserve to be among the also-rans," it's easier to say just take what you get.

I haven't decided if I favor a playoff or not, but how #9 would feel is one of the least important factors IMO.

That actually was holtz's remark but I agree that it is hard to decide who gets in and who doesn't. I have even agreed that a playoff would be ok with me. Hell I don't care as long as the Buckeyes get their share and I get to see them play.
I just don't see it happening because the universities and bowls and the networks don't want to replace the system they have in place. And they won't until the demands of each and every one is met. Hell , how would the contract that the Rose bowl has with the B10 and BCS be worked out? No way the Rose bowl gives that up? And the contract the Sugar bowl has? There are so many things that would have to be worked out.
