Minnesota signs football coach Claeys to 3-year deal; had served as interim when Kill resigned

Minnesota signed interim football coach Tracy Claeys to a three-year deal Wednesday, a move that had been widely expected since Claeys stepped in when Jerry Kill retired suddenly for health reasons.

Financial terms weren't immediately released.

I see a definite resemblance here:

Three years is a nice generous time span for his employment. That might even give him enough time to figure out how a damn game clock works.

It seems like it wasn't that long ago when Minny thought coach Mason wasn't the guy who was ever going to take them to the next level.....

FWIW, Glen Mason has had the best record (64-57; .535) of any coach for Minnesota since George Hauser went 15-11-1 .577 from 1942-1944.

See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota_Golden_Gophers_football

Mason had a better record at Minnesota than some other notable coaches there like; Wes Fessler, Lou Holtz, and Murray Warmath (who is credited with a National Championship in 1960).

Not a good hire, but depending on terms could be a smart move.
If they leveraged the last 2 games (esp scUM), the buyout should remarkably low. And they can get back on the market in a year where there isn't so much turnover going on. Meanwhile, he keeps whatever they had going w/recruiting etc. flowing.

Actually, I'm gonna go against the grain and be a MaxBuck here and say that hiring Claeys is probably the best thing Minnesota could do right now. He's going to keep that coaching staff intact which contributed a big portion of Kill's success in Minny. Claeys just needs to better himself in regards to total game management now that he has the HC gig.

I know this is a fired coaches' thread, but he still could get fired,

Bo Pelini draws two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in final minute of Youngstown State loss

Fifteen seconds later, after a pair of YSU incompletions, Penguin QB Hunter Wells was sacked for an 8-yard loss, resulting in 4th and 33 at the YSU 7 with 11 seconds remaining. According to the TV broadcast, the Penguins coach then drew a second flag for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving his team 4th and 36 from their own 4-yard line.

"I've never seen anything like this in my life," said one commentator.

"Nebraska fans have," replied his broadcast partner, referencing various unsportsmanlike conduct penalties received during Pelini's 7-year tenure as coach of the Huskers.

The fail in all it's awesomeness...
