Cleveland Indians (2011 Season)

Nice piece on Adam Miller...

http://www.indiansprospectinsider.com/2011/05/pomeranz-and-miller-ships-passing-in.html

Also around the farm, Nick Hagadone is DOMINATING (0.00 ERA, 18 strikeouts in 13.2 innings with Double-A Akron). Wonder how long until he's in Cleveland? If he ends up being a key piece of the BP and Masterson keeps pitching the way he has, that Victor trade may end up being a steal for the good guys. Cheng, the catcher in Akron, another one of the Tribe's better prospects is hitting really well, wonder if they maybe look at Santana as more of a 1B long term?

Also, the depth in C-bus is ridiculous which is a very good thing going forward...especially if the injury bug keeps biting. What I like about Phelps and Kipnis is that they're both showing patience at the plate and drawing walks this year. Chis is coming around too, but hopefully Hannahan keeps hitting so there's no need to rush him.

Indians had a little over 9000 again yesterday:! maybe by the time they get back from the West Coast people will start to turn out. I don't know how much Dolan can offer besides giving away free tickets to everyone.

The problem is almost no one believes the Dolans or Shapiro want to win. At all. They look at this great start and figure they have 2 words on their minds: "TRADE VALUE!111!!1!11!1!" You take the way this franchise has been managed since they took over and it's hard to argue with people who think that they are salivating at the thought not of making the playoffs, but of falling 2 games out of first at the deadline so they can firesale everyone they can to get more "prospects" back. Now I don't necessarily agree with that, but I think it will take a year of people seeing a commitment to winning for the turnstiles to click, especially on weekdays when the weather sucks. People will come when they think there is a properly managed product that is not intentionally set up to fail...that will take time.

This drives me crazy. (yes, I know you don't agree with that thinking) Goes back to the fact that this was never a great baseball town. The 90s was just a great opportunity for football fans to fill the void the Browns leaving left by rooting for the Indians. And never realizing how baseball ebbs and flows.

The scary part is what is going to happen as the weather warms up. Cuz this can be a dangerous game of chicken. If fans don't come out to support even a winning team, how can Dolan justify going out to trade for players? Then that will feed into the fans fears for going to the games thinking the Dolan's are cheap, where really Dolan just doesn't want to lose shitloads of money.

Conversly, if the fans start coming out and in July the team is averaging 30k+ in fans a night. Dolan MUST make a trade if the team is still contending to reward that faith. And if he doesn't, a large group of fans will NEVER go to the games.

But worst case... what if there are no good pieces the Indians need at the trade deadline? Do they make a deal just to make a deal?

I think NOT moving Sizemore and Carmona would accomplish not ticking off the fans... or should anyway.

choo having to much Sake the other night

Shin-Soo Choo was arrested for DUI on Monday morning in Sheffield Lake, Ohio.

An unfortunate bit of news for one of baseball's best all-around players. Choo is in the Indians' lineup Tuesday night against the A's and is unlikely to face further punishment. He is batting .250/.322/.394 with four homers and 15 RBI on the year.

I don't think they necessarily have to go out and get anybody...Orlando Cabrera and Hannahan, for example, are trade deadline moves that the Indians can make that they basically made at the start of the season (if that makes any sense), guys for experience and defense on smaller, shorter contracts. I agree with AKAK though, and the point I was making too, is that hanging on to a Sizemore, a Carmona, a Chris Perez...keeping the core of guys that have us in the positions we are in will be critical to showing the fans what they want to see. If we are 2 behind Detroit at the deadline...do the Dolans firesale? If they do, like you say, fans will never show up, because it will become obvious that no matter what position the franchise is in, we will always be looking to get rid of rather than keep. I am pragmatic about what the Dolans are faced with, but they have a good team and some young commodities right now, well sooner than they thought...NOW we'll see what they are made of and what strategy they will employ.

Whether the fans support the owner or not...they SHOULD be supporting the players, because they are out there playing hard and providing some great baseball for a season that was supposed to be a waste.

I'll be sure to make it to a series this summer.

(I know waiting just like everyone else...I'm out of state. :p)

great to see Miller back pitching, talk about a guy with some terrible luck, would be an awesome story if he could work his way to the MLB pen at some point.

the IPI guy said around the AS break on his twitter a few weeks ago for Hagadone if he continues to perform at his current level.....Hagadone reportedly has the best stuff in the system, just been beat up by injury issues...he could be a huge addition to the bullpen later in the year if he stays healthy and maintains his progression

and yea its nice to have the fallback options we have in AAA this year if the injuries start piling up...no need to rush anyone though, which has been the nice thing so far this year, there has not been any need to rush anyone up...Phelps/Kipnis/Chis getting as much development in AAA as possible is a good thing

Pomeranz....REALLY hope he turns out and gives us a top of the line Lefty Starter 1.54 ERA 34K/7BB and a .160 BAA in 23 1/3 in Hi-A ball so far, want to see what he can do once he hits AA (which should be soon)

this Oakland series could be a rough one for the bats

Cahill (4-0 1.88) Tomorrow and Anderson (2-2 2.95) Thursday 2 excellent young pitchers

good thing is Oaklands lineup is laughable....they are 27th in the MLB in runs scored
