Gary Baxter's injury just adds more adversity to what has been a lackluster Cleveland Browns season.

The Texans, looking to snap a seven-game losing streak, may get their Pro Bowl receiver back in the lineup when they host a Browns team without one of its biggest offseason acquisitions.

Houston is 0-6 for the first time in its short history, and hasn't won since Dec. 26 at Jacksonville.

Johnson, though, may return this week after missing the past two games and most of a third with a calf strain, giving the Texans reason to be encouraged. Johnson had more than 1,000 yards receiving last season and often forced double teams that opened up other receivers for the Texans. With him out, Houston's offense has become one-dimensional and very predictable, and David Carr has been sacked 35 times.

The Texans had negative yardage in the second half last Sunday and allowed the Indianapolis Colts to record almost 300 yards and 24 points after halftime in a 38-20 loss.

Despite his frustration, Houston coach Dom Capers still thinks his team can salvage the season. He's previously dealt with 0-4 and 0-5 records, and is trying not to crumble under the pressure.

``Hey, we're all part of this. It's how we respond right now that will determine where we are at the end of the year,'' he said. ``I'm still convinced that we can get this thing going right.''

Carr said the feeling the Texans got from some solid play in the first half against the unbeaten Colts could benefit this battered team.

``We are an 0-6 team but we go out and really believe that we can execute,'' he said. ``When we did execute, it gave us a little boost, a little confidence.''
Cleveland has lost two straight and three of four, and will play the remainder of the season without Baxter.

The Browns placed the cornerback on injured reserve Tuesday after he underwent surgery for a a torn pectoral muscle suffered in last Sunday's 13-10 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Baxter was one of Cleveland's most important acquisitions during the offseason, signing a six-year, $30 million free agent contract in March. He finished the season with 20 tackles and two interceptions.

One player that will continue to start for the Browns is quarterback Trent Dilfer despite having two straight awful performances.

Against the Lions, Dilfer completed 10 of 19 passes for 73 yards and threw three interceptions. His passer rating was just 22.4.

A week earlier, Dilfer went 16-of-30, fumbled twice and threw an interception in a 16-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He has eight turnovers in his past three games and the Browns have not scored an offensive touchdown in two weeks.

``I haven't played well on Sundays the past couple weeks,'' Dilfer said. ``I know I need to fix that.''

Crennel contemplated personnel moves, but decided to keep his starting units intact for at least another week. His alternative at quarterback is rookie Charlie Frye, who has yet to take a regular-season snap in the NFL. ``The quarterback position, with that guy being the leader, you put him in charge,'' Crennel said. ``He's in charge, so you try to give him the benefit of the doubt and not make knee-jerk reactions. What is a knee-jerk, or how long does it take? Well, that's a judgment thing.''

Texans QB David Carr has been under attack all year, and is somehow managing to stay healthy under a barrage of sacks. The Browns hope to continue that trend this weekend, according to BerniesInsiders.com beat writer Fred Greetham. Here is Thursday's Browns report from Berea: The FIRST and FREE daily update for all Browns fans!
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
BEREA – The Browns hope this isn’t the week they wake up the winless Houston Texans and David Carr.
Entering his fourth NFL season, Carr had been sacked 140 times heading into the 2005 season. After being sacked 76 times as a rookie, the Texans cut it to 15 in 2003. However, he went down 49 times last year and has been sacked 35 times this season for an average of just under six times a game.
He was sacked eight times by the Steelers in the second game and seven times against the Bengals and the Titans. He’s on pace over a 16-week schedule to be sacked nearly 100 times. In 2003, Carr missed four games due to injury.
Carr has spent more time running for his life than a fugitive. How has he been able to hold up?
“By the grace of God,” Carr said in a conference call Wednesday.
Orpheus Roye feels this is a chance for the Browns pass rush to get some sacks, as the Browns have just eight sacks through six games.
“You get excited,” Roye said. “But, some teams seem to have their best protection against us.”
For the season, Carr is 85-of-142 (59.9 pct.) for 769 yards, including five touchdowns and five interceptions. His QB rating is 71.6.
Carr has been the Texans second-leading rusher behind Domanick Davis with 29 rushes for 192 yards (6.6 avg.), including one touchdown.
Last year, in the season finale the Browns sacked Carr six times as the Browns went on to win 22-14. Carr was 15-of-25 for 114 yards with one touchdown in that game. In his career against the Browns, Carr is 37-of-61 for 381 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He has been sacked 14 times by the Browns in just two games.
“I think it’s a combination of getting behind and him trying to make a play and maybe holding on to the ball too long,” Roye said.
Roye knows not to take the Texans lightly.
“They have moved the ball against every team,” he said. “We just need to get ready to let it all go on Sunday.”
Quick Hits
Romeo to NY: Crennel will miss Friday’s practice to travel to New York to attend the funeral of Welllington Mara, former owner of the New York Giants.
“Wellington Mara gave me my first job with the New York Giants,“ Crennel said. “He had no ego about him. Wellington knew the business in and out. I’m very respectful for what he’s done for the NFL and for New York.”
To Play or Sit: Despite the rough start to his career, Carr said he would not change anything if he were to do it all over again. The Browns are in a similar quandary trying to decide if it would be better for Charlie Frye to watch and learn from the sidelines, rather than being thrown right into the fray like Carr was as a rookie.
“It gave me the opportunity to play from the beginning,” Carr said. “If I were to do it all over again I would want to play, rather than sit.”
Browns Fault: Carr said he thinks the beginning of the end for Chris Palmer in Houston was the season finale last year when the Browns beat the Texans, 22-14.
Palmer was fired as the Texans’ offensive coordinator after the second game of the 2005 season.
“I think it started in the off season and the loss to Cleveland last year” Carr said.
Roye Near Top: Unofficially, DL Orpheus Roye is near the top of the NFL among defensive linemen in tackles. Roye has 43 tackles, including one tackle for loss, one sack and four QB pressures. He has also forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.
“I’ve heard that I’m at the top in (linemen) tackles,” he said. “I haven’t checked it out, but I’ve made a lot of plays at the line of scrimmage.”
Red Zone Blues: The Browns have been plagued all season on third down. Last week, against the Lions the Browns were 0-of-8 in that department and for the season are at just 32.8 percent.
“If we can do a better job on third down and in the red zone that will help,” Crennel said. “If you do a better job on first and second down, that’ll help on third down. Third and three is better than third and 13. We’re going to try to have more manageable third down situations, so we have a better chance to convert on third downs.”
Crennel said that is a primary focus at practice this week.
“I just want better execution on first and second down, so if we don’t get a first down we have a chance at third-and-3, instead of third-and-13,” Crennel said. “The defense wants third-and-13 because the odds are against the offense making a first down. On third-and- three, your choices are expanded.”
Pool Coming On: Crennel said rookie second-round draft choice Brodney Pool is coming along fine.
“Brodney has made a lot of progress,” Crennel said. “He’s starting to make plays. He has shown flashes and will continue to develop. He’s going to be a good player for us, but he’s not ready to be a starter.”
Pool played in most of the sub packages and has seven tackles, including one sack and two passes broken up.
Injury Update: Other than RB Lee Suggs (thumb) being out, no other player is expected to miss Sunday’s game with the Texans. CB Daylon McCutcheon (ankle), OT Ryan Tucker (neck), DL Orpheus Roye (knee), LB Nick Speegle (ankle) are all probable.

God, this team is fucking impossible to watch. I've never been able to gain the same connection once they came back that I have with the Buckeyes or Indians.

The worst part is that they have no tangible plan in place.

Dilfer is the worst quarterback in the national football league. Our punter averages like 17 yards a punt...

The defense plays their heart out, and then the offense fucks it up.

Trent Dilfer SUCKS.
4th and 17, and you run a play action pass?
Who is going to fall for that?
Did I mention that Dilfer sucks?

Exactly what I said, why waster 4-5 seconds on a play-action fake on fucking 4th and 17. I never want to see Dilfer even hold a football again, put the rookie in there, he cant do any worse. Dilfer should be never allowed to even look at a football again.

Or how about a draw on first down that pretty much killed the last drive. Why do I make myself watch the Browns every week? Dilfer is just horrible, Bryant had a good step on the defensive back. It's time to let Frye play a little bit. Cleveland's remaining schedule is one of the easiest league, I think it might be a good time for Frye to be eased into the starting role.

Pepsid doesn't work anymore

I've been a Browns' fan for more than 40 years, but I can no longer stomach the seemingly endless Sunday afternoon meltdowns. Acid reflux is getting the upperhand just about every week. I know I can't speak for every Browns' fan, but from one who is long-suffering I say.....The city of Cleveland deserves better, the state of Ohio deserves better....and so do all the Browns' fans around the country.

I'm hoping for Frye to play just so Browns fans can see how badly he sucks and how their team has no hope for the next several years. A few weeks ago I was at a Columbus bar and the Browns/Ravens game was on. The Browns fans were yelling and cheering every 5 minutes. The funny thing was that they stunk that game and they barely had a chance to win. My girlfriend even asked, "Imagine how annoying they would be if the Browns were actually doing well"
