Notes on how the Browns will approach Sunday's game and how players will be used...
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
Reuben Droughns was named the Browns' starting running back, ending any debate about William Green and Droughns sharing the ball. Green will get a few chances, but only to give Droughns a breather if the Browns are able to string long drives together.
"Reuben has a foot up on William," Coach Romeo Crennel said, inferring that Droughns has to have more games like he did against the Bengals - 12 carries for 78 yards plus three catches for 22 yards - to get a 'leg up' on Green.
Green ran strong in the first three preseason games, but he did a poor job avoiding tacklers in the final preseason game and in the four carries he had against the Bengals.
GAME PLAN
The Lions put pressure on Brett Favre and the Browns would love to do the same. It would mean pressuring from the inside where Favre is trying to cope with the loss of guards Mike Wahle and Marco Rivera in free agency.
The Browns were reluctant to blitz last week against Carson Palmer and might be even more gun-shy against a 15-year veteran, but blitzing might be their only chance to get to Favre.
Last week Trent Dilfer threw 43 passes. Coach Romeo Crennel does not want that to happen again if it can be helped. If Reuben Droughns can get 20 to 25 carries it means the Browns are playing ball-control offense, which they want to do.
MATCHUPS TO WATCH
Browns RB Reuben Droughns, who describes himself as a downhill runner, vs. LB Nick Barnett, the Packers' leading tackler the last two seasons: By his own admission, Droughns does not wiggle to make tacklers miss. He needs a good initial block and if he gets it he is difficult to bring down because he is a powerful runner.
Browns LT L.J. Shelton, a bulldozing run blocker, vs. Packers DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, who has 49 sacks in four season: The Browns did not allow a sack last week. That mark will be tested in Green Bay. Shelton has to avoid holding penalties that can kill drives. Trent Dilfer could use three-step drops to frustrate the pass rush.
INJURY IMPACT
TE Aaron Shea is listed as questionable for the second straight week, but once again he cannot lift his right arm. Joshua Cribbs is out with a sprained left MCL. He is the Browns' best kick returner and also one of the gunners on punt coverage. Rookie Antonio Perkins will return kicks. The gunner replacement has not been announced...LB Matt Stewart is out with a sprained right MCL. Chaun Thompson will replace him in the lineup. Stewart is not expected to return until Oct. 9 at the earliest.
PLAYER/PERSONNEL NOTES
  • RB Lee Suggs is practicing, but he might not play until after the bye. He has been out for nearly a month with a sprained ankle and Crennel says Suggs will have to get his conditioning back.
  • CB Gary Baxter returned to full practice for the first time since suffering a concussion Aug. 20. He has had some memory problems since the injury and is concerned about remembering the play called.
  • TE Aaron Shea is listed as questionable with a pectoral strain and did not practice. He still does not have full use of his right arm.
  • LB Matt Stewart is week to week with a sprained right MCL. The Browns are considering bringing in another linebacker but are holding off that decision for now.
  • KR Joshua Cribbs is listed as week to week with a sprained left MCL. Rookie Antonio Perkins is replacing him on kick returns.
  • DE Orpheus Roye has a hyper-extended left knee that limited him in practice, but he is expected to start against the Packers.
BROWNS-PACKERS FACTOIDS
  • It is the 16th meeting between the clubs. The Green Bay Packers lead the series 9-6 and have a 4-2 advantage in Green Bay. The Browns have not won in Green Bay since a 24-7 victory Nov. 4, 1956. The have been to Green Bay four times since and lost each time.
  • Rookie quarterback Charlie Frye was nine years old when Packers quarterback Brett Favre was a rookie with the Falcons in 1991.
  • Jim Brown's final NFL game was against the Packers in the NFL championship game played Jan. 2, 1966. The Packers held him to 50 yards on 12 carries.
  • Packers defensive coordinator Jim Bates got his NFL coaching start with the Browns under Bill Belichick.
  • The Browns have played the Packers once since returning to the NFL in 1999, a 30-7 loss in Green Bay. The lasting memory from that game was Jamel White rushing for 131 yards on 26 carries, by far his best game with the Browns.
  • Fifteen Browns are in the Hall of Fame. The Packers with 20 are one of four teams with more H.O.F. representatives. The others are the Bears with 26, the Steelers with 17 and the Giants with 16.
  • BY THE NUMBERS: 2-7 - Trent Dilfer has that record as a starting quarterback against the Packers. He has not faced them in a starting role since his final year with the Buccaneers in 1999.
  • QUOTE TO NOTE: "I've seen that offense too many times. Those guys are capable of lighting it up if you don't play a good game against them." -- Browns safety Brian Russell, formerly of the Vikings, when asked if the Packer offense has lost some punch.

Matt Stewart

The Browns are will have to continue to learn the 3-4 defense without the experienced Matt Stewart. Despite losing the linebacker to an MCL, the team is focused on continuing to make progress with the
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
After allowing the Bengals 420 total yards and Rudi Johnson 126 yards rushing, the Browns are preparing to face the Packers and their best running back, Ahman Green, with a depleted linebacking corps.
Matt Stewart, versatile enough to play either outside linebacking spot or inside with Andra Davis, will miss the game Sunday in Lambeau Field and most likely a few more games because of sprained right MCL suffered in the first quarter of the season opener.
"Matt is very smart and he plays fundamentally sound," said rookie Nick Speegle, who is getting more reps because of Stewart's injury. "He's not as big as the other linebackers but he can take on a block and force it back in the hole or he can drop back in pass coverage.
"I think he's a great linebacker. He's one guy I look up to because he can play both sides. It's going to be hard to replace him, but we have to move on."
This is an obstacle Coach Romeo Crennel did not expect to be in his way as he tries to reshape the Browns. He said in preseason, when he called his relationship with players "a honeymoon," that the test would come when the losses started adding up. The Browns are 0-1 and facing a Packers team that lost 17-3 in Detroit last week. Never in Brett Favre's previous 225 consecutive starts did the Packers score as few as three points.
Crennel has no plans to alter the course he set out on when he was named Browns head coach Feb. 8. He is convinced the 3-4 defense will work, even though the Stewart injury is a critical loss; he was the most experienced Browns player in the 3-4 because he played it in Atlanta before signing with the Browns as a free agent.
"After one game, if I go in there and say, 'OK, guys, this 3-4 sucks, so I'm throwing it out,' and after another game, 'Hey, this new defense I put in last week sucks, so I'm throwing that out,' then they don't have a system, they don't have a defense and they don't know what to hang their hat on," Crennel said. "We're going to try to hang our hat on the things that we know work and we're going to work to get it done. I think these players will work with us to do that.
"Staying the course, to a degree, can solidify the locker room. You don't want to be helter-skelter."
Crennel said it is up to him as head coach to deliver the message about staying the course, but it helps that guard Joe Andruzzi and cornerback Ray Mickens have been on teams on which Crennel was an assistant coach. And even though Andruzzi plays offense, he is championing Crennel's cause.
From the beginning, Andra Davis has followed Crennel. None of this is to imply there is grumbling in the locker room, but Davis and his teammates are happy to know Crennel is not panicking after one bad game. This is a team with 28 players on the roster that were not on the team at the end of the 2004 season.
Davis is convinced the defense is good enough to win, as long as the players do what they're coached to do.
"We have to go back to the drawing board," Davis said. "We know the system works. They've used it in Pittsburgh for years and Romeo made it work in New England. When you look at that team you don't see a lot of superstars.
"We gave up too many easy plays against Cincinnati. We can't do that this week or the same thing will happen."

From Berea, Fred Greetham reports on Chaun Thompson's increased role with the loss of LB Matt Stewart...
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
BEREA – With the knee injury to linebacker Matt Stewart, the Browns linebacker corps becomes even thinner in the experience department.
Chaun Thompson, who tracked down Carson Palmer in last week’s game and forced a fumble, will be counted upon even more to make those types of big plays.
“That type of play is me,” Thompson said. “I do it in practice all the time. The guys up front had a good push in the middle of the field and they flushed (Palmer) out of the pocket and I made the play.”
Thompson will make his first start of the season at right outside linebacker. Thompson had six tackles last week against the Bengals, including a sack. He also had a pressure, a forced fumble and he broke up a pass.
Thompson is in his third year after being the team’s second-round draft choice in 2003 out of West Texas A & M. Thompson had 80 tackles last season with 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery. Thompson started 13 games last season.
Thompson’s speed and athleticism is expected to help him in the 3-4 scheme.
“Chaun has always flashed,” Romeo Crennel said. “He’s got good abilities and can chase. On his chase play he caused a fumble. He’s learning the defense and I still believe he’ll be a good player for us.”
With Stewart injured, Thompson will be counted upon to make plays.
“I’m anxious to get more opportunities,” Thompson said.
Many felt Thompson was drafted too highly by Butch Davis and Thompson has been motivated to show that he belongs.
“I’ve been trying to prove that since day one,” he said. “That continues to motivate me and drive me.”

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Roye, who missed practice Wednesday with a hyper-extended knee, returned to practice Thursday and said there's "no doubt" he'll be ready for Sunday.

"I'm good," Roye said. "I got a day off just to recover."

Thursday's official injury report listed Roye as questionable and said he sat out the "team" portion of practice.

Baxter has now gone through two practices, his first two practices since suffering a concussion Aug. 20. Browns coach Romeo Crennel said Thursday morning he couldn't yet say if Baxter would be ready to start.

But Baxter said Thursday afternoon he feels good and "God willing, I will be in the starting lineup."

Lee Suggs also practiced for the second-straight day Thursday. He'd been sidelined with a high ankle sprain since Aug. 17.

"(Suggs) moved around better than I thought he would," Crennel said.
It's unclear what role Suggs will play Sunday. Reuben Droughns is expected to make his second straight start at running back.

Aaron Shea (shoulder) and Leigh Bodden (groin) missed practice again Thursday. Both remain questionable for Sunday.

It's a cheesehead!

Date: Sep 18, 2005

The cheeseheads will be out en masse as the Browns take on the Packers today at 4:15. All of us here at Bernie's Insiders are getting fired up for gametime! Here are some up-to-the-minute notes on personnel and strategies for today's game.
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
KICKOFF: Sunday, 4:15 ET
GAMEDATE: 9/18/05
SURFACE: Grass
TV: CBS, Jim Nantz, Phil Simms, Bonnie Bernstein
SERIES: 16th meeting. The Green Bay Packers lead the series 9-6 and have a 4-2 advantage in Green Bay. The Browns have not won in Green Bay since a 24-7 victory Nov. 4, 1956. The have been to Green Bay four times since and lost each time.
*2005 rankings: Browns: offense 9th (18th rush, 6th pass); defense 30th (26th rush, 25th pass). Packers: offense 30th (28th rush, 25th pass); defense 6th (19th rush, 4th pass)

PREDICTION: Packers 27-24

KEYS TO THE GAME: The Packers are struggling to protect QB Brett Favre, especially in the middle of their offensive line, and now are without top WR Javon Walker. That makes it all the more vital to establish a running game that has been inconsistent through the preseason and Week 1. The Browns could prove the perfect medicine as they make the transition to a 3-4 defense despite insufficient personnel -- especially at the pass-rushing positions. Cleveland feels better about its offense, although coach Romeo Crennel doesn't want QB Trent Dilfer throwing the ball 43 times again. It's key for the Browns to keep the game close and rely on RB Reuben Droughns. They need to be able to control the clock if for no other reason than to keep their defense off the field.

FAST FACTS: Browns: Dilfer is 2-7 as a starting quarterback against the Packers. ... WR Dennis Northcutt needs 57 punt return yards to pass Gerald McNeil (1,545) for the franchise's all-time lead. Packers: Lead the series 10-6, and won the only meeting since the Browns re-entered the league, 30-7, at home in 2001. ... Favre has six TD passes and no INTs with a 108.5 passer rating in three career games against the Browns.

PERSONNEL NEWS
Browns
  • RB Lee Suggs returned to practice and moved pretty well, according to coach Romeo Crennel. Suggs has been sidelined since Aug. 18 with a high ankle sprain. Crennel probably will decide on Sunday if Suggs will play.
  • RB Reuben Droughns will start against Green Bay and figures to get most of the team's carries. Droughns outperformed William Green in the opener and earned a shot at being the lead back.
  • CB Gary Baxter returned to practice and there's a good chance he will start Sunday in Green Bay. Baxter has been sidelined since Aug. 20 with a concussion. If he plays, it will be the first time all season that starters Baxter and Daylon McCutcheon will be on the field together. It might not matter a lot, though, as neither are pure cover corners.
  • DE Orpheus Roye has been listed as questionable on the injury report with a hyperextended knee, but Roye vowed to play in Green Bay. Roye is always there on Sunday.
  • LB Matt Stewart could miss up to a month with a sprained MCL in his knee. Stewart is not a superstar, but his loss does not help the Browns run defense. He is replaced by Chaun Thompson, who is a fast linebacker best suited to rushing the passer. Kenard Lang, a converted defensive end, starts at the other outside spot.
Packers
  • OLB Na'il Diggs practiced for the second straight day after being out since Aug. 8 with a torn MCL in his left knee.

Diggs is questionable for Sunday's home opener against Cleveland. With Paris Lenon getting most of the reps with the No. 1 defense at the strongside spot, it's possible Diggs will be held out until the Sept. 25 game against Tampa Bay.

"I really don't want to rush it," Diggs said Thursday. "I don't want to put any pressure on (the knee). When everyone feels confident that Na'il Diggs is ready to play, Na'il Diggs will play."
  • WR Javon Walker remains on the 53-man roster, though he's headed to injured reserve after suffering a torn ACL in his right knee during the season-opening loss at Detroit. Surgery has yet to be scheduled for Walker, the only player who hasn't practiced this week.
  • WR Robert Ferguson, who will move into the starting lineup alongside Donald Driver with Walker out, will have his sizable role on special teams reduced. Ferguson has been an invaluable coverage man on punts and kickoffs and also has returned kickoffs. A final decision on whether Ferguson will continue to return kickoffs or be used solely on the coverage units hasn't been announced. Fellow receivers Antonio Chatman and Terrence Murphy are candidates to replace Ferguson on kickoff returns, working in tandem with RB Najeh Davenport.
  • DT Cullen Jenkins is entrenched as the starter on the interior of the defensive line beside NT Grady Jackson. Jenkins, younger brother of Carolina All-Pro tackle Kris Jenkins, will work in a rotation with Corey Williams and Colin Cole at the three-technique position.
  • QB Aaron Rodgers has resumed working on holds for field goals and extra points now that he's been thrust into the No. 2 role behind Brett Favre. The team backed off having Rodgers, its top draft pick this year, audition for the vacant holding job early in the preseason when it appeared fourth-year veteran Craig Nall would emerge as Favre's top backup. Punter B.J. Sander is K Ryan Longwell's holder. Despite Sander's bungling a snap that foiled what would have been a 22-yard field goal in the opener, Longwell said he prefers having the second-year punter as his holder. Rodgers is merely being groomed for "a worst-case scenario," according to Longwell.

INSIDE THE CAMPS

Browns
The Browns have one fear for Sunday's game in Green Bay: The Packers will turn the offense over to running back Ahman Green.
There's good reason. The Browns front seven is suspect, and Rudi Johnson and the Bengals showed in week one that it's not all that difficult to run on the Browns 3-4 defense. Cincinnati ran for 148 yards and averaged 4.6 yards per carry.
In their season-opening loss in Detroit, the Packers ran Green just 12 times.
Penalties partly led to that low total, but the Browns know that Green is too good to run only 12 times.
So the defense is preparing for Green - and perhaps even backup Najeh Davenport - to get a bunch of carries.
Until the Browns show they can stop the run, teams will continue to run on them. It is, after all, the simplest way to win a game in the NFL.

Packers
Coach Mike Sherman has gone old-school during practice this week in his latest attempt to crack down on his team's troublesome propensity for getting into trouble on the field.
Players who are penalized by a local crew of three officials or commit a turnover are promptly subjected to running a good distance. Generally, from one end of the expansive outdoor field to the fence on the other end.
"That's a long field - that's a 200-yard field. Nobody wants to be running that," running back Tony Fisher asserted Thursday following a practice that he said included quite a number of winded participants.
"We had a few too many penalties today, so there was a lot of running. We have a couple of more days to get it out of our system."
On the heels of committing 36 penalties totaling 274 yards in four preseason games, the transgressions were alarmingly unprecedented in a season-opening loss at Detroit on Sunday.
The mischievous Packers were cited 18 times for breaking the rules, of which 14 were enforced for 100 yards. It's the greatest number of penalties for one game with Sherman as coach since 2000 and the team's highest in nearly 18 years.
"What we did last week was unacceptable, and we know that," right tackle Mark Tauscher said.
Sherman has prided himself on coaching teams that have been highly disciplined. In his first five years, the Packers averaged only six penalties for 49 yards per game.
One game into this season, they rank second in the league behind the notorious lawbreakers from Oakland, who were penalized 16 times for 149 yards.
Eight of the Packers' penalties were charged to the offense, with four negating gains of 75 yards. Cornerback Ahmad Carroll, a chief offender as a rookie last season, committed four infractions on defense and lost his starting job this week to Joey Thomas.
Since his constant directives in meetings have seemingly fallen on deaf ears, Sherman resorted to the high school-like punitive measure of having players run in practice to pay for their inexcusable mistakes.
"There's only so much a coaching staff can do," Tauscher said. "It's up to the players to start executing better and more crisply. We have to start taking some ownership. The coaches coach, and we play. The coaches aren't the ones out there getting penalties. They're putting us in the best position to make plays, and if we don't start doing it, we're going to continue to struggle."

Cleveland 26, Green Bay 24

CNNSI Game Recap

p1.edwards.jpg

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- The retirement of Reggie White's number couldn't inspire the Green Bay Packers past the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

Trent Dilfer won for the first time in nine trips to Lambeau Field, guiding Cleveland over the Packers 26-24 for new coach Romeo Crennel's first win. Dilfer threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Braylon Edwards and a game-icing 62-yarder to Steve Heiden with 1:50 remaining.

Dilfer, who lost six times as a starter at Green Bay, once as a reserve and another time as an observer, completed 21 of 32 passes for 336 yards -- the second-highest total of his career -- and three touchdowns. The only time he threw for more yards was on Sept. 15, 2002, when he threw for 352 against Arizona.

His 62-yarder to Heiden made it 26-17, too much for the Packers to overcome.

Brett Favre broke John Elway's single-stadium NFL touchdown record of 180 with a 4-yard toss to Tony Fisher with 4 seconds left. But Brodney Pool recovered the onside kick for Cleveland (1-1).

After Favre, who also joined Dan Marino and Elway in the 50,000-yard passing club, pulled the Packers to 19-17 with a 19-yard TD to Robert Ferguson with 3:40 remaining, the Browns were backed up and facing a crucial third down.

With the crowd chanting "Reg-gie! Reg-gie!" in honor of the late White, whose number was retired at halftime, Dilfer calmly hit running back Reuben Droughns for a 12-yard gain on third-and-5. Then, he found Heiden over the middle to put the game out of reach.

The Packers (0-2) looked at first like they wouldn't miss Javon Walker, their star receiver who went down with a season-ending knee injury in the opener.

After being held out of the end zone at Detroit a week earlier, the Packers went ahead 7-0 on their first possession. Donald Driver caught a short pass over the middle, turned the corner and raced past defensive backs Ray Mickens and Chris Crocker for a 42-yard score.

The Browns (1-1), who also struggled offensively in their opening loss to Cincinnati, responded with an 80-yard drive capped by Dilfer's 1-yard throw to Heiden.

Phil Dawson added field goals of 21 and 39 yards to give the Browns a 13-7 halftime lead.

His first field goal followed the first of Favre's two interceptions. Favre tried to force a pass to tight end Bubba Franks, but it was tipped twice and cornerback Daylon McCutcheon came down with it and returned it to the Packers 22.

The Packers came out of the locker room early to watch White's No. 92 unveiled beneath the north end zone alongside those of Don Hutson, Tony Canadeo, Bart Starr and Ray Nitschke. White's widow, Sara, spoke to the crowd, and highlights were shown of White sacking quarterback after quarterback and holding the Lombardi Trophy aloft after the Packers' Super Bowl win following the 1996 season.

Then, it was back to 2005, and the Packers continued their sloppy play in losing their home opener for the third straight season.

Gary Baxter intercepted Favre's pass for Ferguson in the left corner of the end zone in the third quarter. Two plays later, Dilfer hit Edwards 10 yards downfield, and Edwards split defensive backs Joey Thomas and Nick Collins, racing 80 yards for the score. Cullen Jenkins blocked the extra point.

Favre finished 32-of-44 for 342 yards, three TDs and two interceptions.

Man , that division is HORRIBLE this year...the Vikings, Packers, Lions, and Bears will be lucky to win 15 games...combined.

Green Bay is awful.

Nice win for Cleveland though...certainly looks like they can compete as long as Droughns gets some space and Dilfer doesn't do anything stupid.

GAME SUMMARY
Solid offense line play and an opportunistic defense set the tone for the Browns against the Packers today, enabling Head Coach Romeo Crennel to notch his first win as the Browns head coach.

Cleveland held off a determined fourth quarter charge by future Hall-of-Famer Brett Favre to seal the win, clinching the victory on a surprising 62-yard touchdown catch and run by TE Steve Heiden.

The Browns offense started out strong as the team's veteran offensive line kept Trent Dilfer clean and allowed him to complete 13 of his first 16 passes for a first-half passing rating of 118. Sticking with their running attack much longer than in week one against the Bengals, the Browns managed to control the clock throughout much of the game, although starting RB Reuben Droughns was held under three yards per rush. Reuben Droughns finished with 50 yards on 20 carries. The Packers had held the Lions to similar numbers last week, although they lost that game as well.

The Browns run defense, which was abused last week by Rudi Johnson, allowed over 100 yards by the Packers but held rushing mainstay Ahman Green to 54 yards and slightly over three yards a carry. Brett Favre had time to throw, but was frustrated by clutch efforts by cornerbacks Gary Baxter and Daylon McCutcheon. McCutcheon had a key interception as well as two passes defensed, and Gary Baxter had a key end zone interception to prevent the Packers from creeping too close in the second half.

Other than what appeared to be a blown coverage leading to a 42-yard touchdown run by Donald Driver, the Browns defense was opportunistic in keeping the Packers under control. Andra Davis was very active, with twelve solo tackles and seven assists to lead the team.
