Cleveland Browns (official thread of Masochism 2015)

I guess that is the problem with keeping big Mike around. If you keep him, he is not going to change DC's so that means O'Neill would be back as DC next season. That might be the biggest reason Haslam might have if he wants to keep Pet for some reason. I am not a big fan of Pet because he just does not show me anything on the sidelines and the players seem to lack discipline with regard to their techniques. The rookies have not shown much improvement over the course of the season and that is a direct reflection on the HC.

Wait? They have a scheme? I was confused.

I have to apologize to big Rubin for last year. I thought he was washed up. Clearly Carroll knows what to get out of him as he's been an effective player inside for the Hawks.

This defensive coaching staff, particularly Pettine have an issue with their philosophy. It's falling apart in front of them and not just in Cleveland. As tsteele has pointed out, the Bills as well.
If you're a defensive coach worth your salt, your defense doesn't magically play better AFTER you leave nor does it suffer a downturn AFTER you arrive.

Rather remarkable considering that for the past few seasons before the Pettine era, the defense was verging on competent while the offense was dog shit.
Now the tables are completely reversed and its god damn incredible to watch.

I'm not sure it matters who the DC since it'll be Pettine's / Rex Ryan scheme regardless.
If we have to keep Pettine so other coaches will take the job seriously, then fine. I'm not sure why Haslam fired Chudzinski after 1 year just to hire a defunct DC. Not that I think he was the solution, but it's hard to get potential HCs to look if they think Haslam is gonna pull the trigger after 1 season.
If you pull the trigger, you better have some confidence that you can pull in an improvement. Not a mirror image on the other side of the ball.

Alright, as long as everyone is seeing the same thing, I guess. lol

Yeah, great point on Rubin, and I generally remember a lot of negativity toward the guy last year, and it was the canary in the coal mine I guess (of course its hard to know sometimes how dinged these guys are, but "washed up" didn't make any sense) he'd been nothing but a very competent football player up till then. I'm not saying Ndomakong Suh, I'm saying if you have a guy like he had been in your rotation at the right price, you're in pretty good shape and all of the sudden he's completely ineffective and you're getting torched on the ground and no pressure on the QB.

Anyone notice when they put 4 DL's and and just play straight up like a 4 man front, its actually not terrible?

I thought I was a pretty entertaining game to watch. The first half was not pretty at all and it almost looked like the coaching staff has told Johnny "do not leave that pocket" and at halftime that must have told him to get the hell out of the pocket and revert back to your days as a Aggie. I do not know if it is is footwork that caused so many passes to be off target or what but if he could and hit a few of those this game might have turned out different.

The defense played pretty good in the second half which is surprising because usually it is the other way around. Maybe Pettine did not make any adjustments before the game and then may be he made some during the half. I do not know if it was because Kansas City is not very good or because the Browns are playing for their coach.

It certainly will be interesting to see what happens next Monday because Farmer and Pet cannot coexist so one or both of them will be gone. I sure as hell hope that Haslam get some input from a football person regarding his big decision.

if that is true it better be with the stipulation that O'Neill goes or Pettine takes over as the DC along with being the HC and I wonder if Farmer will blow the whistle on who actually made the calls for the #1 draft choices

Not gonna happen. Pettine has said as much that he would be making most of the same calls that O'Neil has.

As for who made the calls on the #1 picks? We all know whose hand it was with Johnny. As for Gilbert? I truly do believe that was Farmer and Pettine.

Jury is still out on Shelton. Erving? I'm still not sure why we went Oline in the 1st round.
