it's all about opportunity costs. atlanta ponied up a steep price to get jones, and really, they should have been bounced in their first playoff game each year if seattle doesn't shit the bed for no real reason. atlanta's defense is still soft and they can't run the ball effectively on a consistent basis. would they have been better served to use those picks to shore up their interior OL and keep their defense from being carved up?

Well Seattle DID have a real reason to shit the bed. His name is Pete Carroll....

My point is simply this...I'd MUCH rather have a special WR than a good interior DL-man. Hindsight 20/20 or whatever...these kinds of choices have contributed greatly to the clowns being the worst franchise in sports going on a decade and a half with no real end in sight.

It should. If the Browns take him two years ago and Colt fails again, the push to get a QB looms much larger and there is no Brandon Weeden being 29 and throwing game-ending Bauserbombs when he needs to keep them in-bounds for anyone to have a chance.

And what QB would have we taken to turn this franchise around?? The only
2 legitimate franchise QB's in the last 3 years have been Luck & RGThrice.

Geno and Barkley this year are just as questionable as Weeden.

I think even with Jones, the Browns still would have been bad - maybe bad enough to qualify for one of those two QBs, you never know.

And who knows, you might have gotten more out of Colt too.

Either way, the Browns missed on a special player. You don't win in the league unless you have them and the Browns have zero on offense right now (Richardson needs to be healthy before we can truly say yes, he is special).

It isn't really worth debating - I'm sure Jones would have dislocated his neck stretching his hamstrings on the first day of OTAs or something and never played again.

Bjoern Werner is a 4-3 defensive end. Alternatively, the better DE on Fsu's roster going into the season was Brandon Jenkins. Unfortunately he broke his foot in the first game and now looks like a 2nd or 3rd round pick. He was considered slightly undersized but the better pass rusher. I could see him being a steal assuming his foot has healed properly. Amazing first step.

The best thing about Werner is how well rounded he is. Good against the rush, good at getting to the QB, but definitely a guy who needs his hand in the dirt.

If they go OLB in first round I think it will be Jarvis Jones. Awful in run support but do is Aldon Smith and San Fran seems to be OK. I think pass rusher is the biggest need and Jones would fill that need.

Maybe it's the homer in me, but I think John Simon would be fantastic as a 3-4 DE. He will be able to hold 270-275 lbs pretty easily and has held up in run support even as a DT in a 4-3. I imagine having a guy who can maintain leverage at his size but also get to the QB with his speed and strength from that position would make him a good candidate. Wouldn't mind the Browns taking a look if he slips a little come draft day.

And you don't feel Simon is someone who needs his hand in the ground?

I love Johnny as much as the next Buckeye - but if he's drafted to be our
Primary pass rusher - then I think this defense is in some serious trouble.

Maybe I'm missing something, but didn't he just say he'd have his hand on the ground as a 3-4 DE?

Good god. I'm paying attention to the AFC title too much. For some
Reason I thought OLB.

No worries, I'm sitting on a conference call with nothing to do and no TV in the office since we're moving to a new office next week.

If he had said OLB, I'd be right with you in think he was out of his mind

As a DE not OLB. But ya, with his motor I could see him thriving in a 3-4, especially with attention you'd have to give Rubin and Taylor as wide-bodies.

I noticed you didn't like Dion Jordan earlier but he has good speed and would probably be effective on the edge. It's a tough business to accurately call good 3-4 OLB's IMO. I think it's easy to pinpoint the traits you want and like a certain body-type but sometimes it doesn't translate either. In fact, I thought Bruce Irvin was one of the worst picks I had ever seen and the guy was a monster this year. I thought he may even be too undersized as an OLB in a 3-4 but first step is so huge at that position.

I'm ok with a Jarvis Jones even after watching bama abuse him because he would be protected as an OLB on run plays.

I guess my question is how many times in the NFL does a team lineup in an actual 3-4. I would think that the majority of plays after first down the defense has 5 DBs on the field anyway.

Really depends on the team. SF usually has some form of a 3-4 going. They don't sub much.

The Browns don't have anything close to what SF has on defense though.. that's exactly why Aldon Smith has so much success. His game against the run is hidden by the d-line, Willis and Bowman.

San Fran is much better than Cleveland, no doubt, but the Briwns actually have some talent up front. They desperately need a guy who can get to the QB in passing situations. I think overlooking a glaring weakness for a good strength is OK in this scenario.

Didn't see it posted in here yet, but thought I'd mention that Chip Kelly hired the Walking Colostomy Bag to be his OC in Philly :slappy:

He may very well do a good job at that...he was a decent OC before. He just blows armadillo scrotom as a head coach, so if he has no decision making or game management decisions whatsoever, he will be golden.
