Browns' Droughns acquitted of DUI

Associated Press

<!-- begin body-content -->MEDINA, Ohio - Cleveland Browns running back Reuben Droughns has been acquitted of drunken driving.
The 10-person jury in Medina Municipal Court deliberated for 35 minutes Tuesday before deciding Droughns was not impaired when State Highway Patrol Trooper Sam Crist pulled him over Nov. 1. A breath test showed Droughns had an alcohol level of .08, the state's legal limit.
Droughns, 27, was charged with failing the Breathalyzer test, driving under the influence and traveling 50 mph in a 35-mph zone. Prosecutor Matthew Lanier dropped the latter charges before the trial began.
Crist testified that he spotted Droughns speeding and weaving in traffic while driving in suburban Cleveland.
Droughns and his wife, Kellie, disputed the trooper's testimony that Droughns was weaving, and Droughns said he was unfamiliar with the speed limit in the area. Droughns said he drank three cocktails at a Halloween party that night.
Droughns, who signed a three-year contract extension with the Browns earlier this year, said after the verdict he was happy to get the charge behind him so he could concentrate on football. He rushed for 1,232 yards last season on 309 carries, scoring two touchdowns.
Kellie Droughns said the acquittal was a relief.
"It's been hard on us, hard on Reuben," she said. "We're taking a limo everywhere, even to the grocery store."

BROWNS UPDATE: Savage sees future in Sowells

Thursday, May 11, 2006

IN BROWNS PLANS Former Indiana University offensive lineman Isaac Sowells was the 112th overall pick in the NFL Draft by the Browns, who hope he can convert to guard.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

BEREA - Isaac Sowells comes to the Browns from the Big Ten’s poor side of town.
Whereas Ohio State had nine players picked in the most recent NFL Draft, Sowells’ alma mater — Indiana — has had five this decade.
Sowells, though, will be a money pick if the Browns’ plan for him — get good enough to start at guard by 2007 — pans out.
The Lousiville, Ky., native started at offensive tackle the last three seasons at Indiana. He can feel Cleveland’s pain. The Browns went 15-33 during the same period the Hoosiers were 9-25.
Cleveland made Sowells the No. 112 overall pick of the draft, preferring him to Ohio State guard Rob Sims (Seahawks, No. 128).
“We did as well as we could at Indiana,” Sowells said. “The Big Ten is probably the most physical conference in the country.
“I thought I did pretty well. No one kicked my butt or anything like that.”
When Sowells was a redshirt freshman guard in 2002, the Hoosiers got hammered, 52-7, at Penn State, but he got to test himself against defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy, a No. 12 overall draft pick in 2003.
Moved to tackle in 2003, Sowells suffered through a 30-7 loss at Ohio State, but he was respectable against end Will Smith, a No. 18 overall draft pick in 2004.
In a 22-18 loss to Penn State in 2004, Sowells battled end Tamba Hali, a No. 20 overall draft pick this year.
In 2005, Indiana got drilled, 41-10, by Ohio State, but Sowells hung in there amid changing matchups.
“Against some formations and some second- or third-and-longs, I went against Bobby Carpenter,” Sowells said. “I faced Mike Kudla, who was pretty strong.
“Obviously, Carpenter was good enough to be picked in the first round by Dallas. I thought I was a good player, too. I thought it was pretty even.”
At 6-foot-3 1/2, 324 pounds, Sowells has an NFL guard’s body.
Browns General Manager Phil Savage helped Baltimore find a long-term starting guard in the fourth round of of the 1999 draft, taking Edwin Mulitalo at No. 129 overall.
Savage began to visualize Sowells as a Cleveland guard along about the Indiana-Ohio State game last October.
“They had three or four different offenses in Isaac’s years there,” Savage said. “I think about mid-year in ’05, he really showed what his NFL potential could be.”
Developing Sowells is a priority for offensive line coach Jeff Davidson. Current No. 1 left guard Joe Andruzzi is getting older and has knee issues. No. 1 right guard Cosey Coleman can be a free agent in March.
Sowells understands why he’ll have to move to guard. Guards generally spar with defensive tackles, who are bigger but not as athletic as the defensive ends that offensive tackles must neutralize.
“NFL tackles tend to be 6-5 or taller,” he said. “It’s amazing how an inch and a half makes a huge difference.”
Davidson is teaching Sowells to use more compact footwork than he did at tackle. Strength coach John Lott wants him stronger than he was at the NFL Combine, when he bench pressed 225 pounds 20 times.
“It’s neat,” Sowells said, “because I don’t have too much pressure on me to the point of, do this now or you’re going to get cut.”
Savage, though, is banking on Sowells doing something by 2007, or earlier if injuries hit.

Trench troubles
The Browns have received little help from big blockers drafted in the expansion era. A review of their picks:
Long-term starters None. The Bowns hope Round 4 pick Isaac Sowells becomes one.
Medical center Jeff Faine (Round 1, 2003) started three straight years, but finished each one on injured reserve.
What’s my line? Melvin Fowler (Round 3, 2002) bounced from role to role before getting traded. ... Paul Zukauskas (Round 7, 2001) couldn’t hang on to a guard job. ... Joaquin Gonzalez (Round 7, 2001) made some starts as an injury replacement. ... Kirk Chambers (Round 6, 2004) and Jonathan Dunn (Round 7, 2005) are fighting to stay on the team. End of the line The only other offensive linemen drafted since 1999 were Brad Bedell (Round 6, 2000) and Manny Savea (Round 7, 2000).

Kosar’s wife seeking a divorce in Florida

Thursday, May 11, 2006

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD>By Steve Doerschuk REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

Bernie Kosar’s wife of 16 years has filed for divorce in Florida’s Broward County.
According to a report in Wednesday’s Miami Herald, court documents say Babette Kosar accuses Bernie Kosar of “increasingly bizarre and erratic behavior and various other addictions ... (he acts) financially irrationally and irresponsibly.”
According to the newspaper, the former Browns quarterback refutes that he has addictions, characterizes his financial habits as generosity and wants to stay married.
According to the paper, Kosar said, “I love my wife and kids. I don’t want to be divorced. I don’t believe in it. ... I’m very comfortable with who I am and what I’ve accomplished.”
The paper cited a 1990 prenuptial agreement in which Kosar listed his assets at $20.76 million.
The couple married in 1990 shortly after Kosar’s run as Browns quarterback peaked. He had helped the team to three AFC championship games within four seasons from 1986-89. They have four children, 14, 13, 8 and 6.
Babette Kosar filed then withdrew a divorce petition in 2004, the paper said. For most of this decade, Kosar was the face of Bernie’s Insiders, a Browns-oriented magazine, but he withdrew his backing and his name. Kosar has an informal role with the current Browns and has developed a relationship with quarterback Charlie Frye. Frye said this week that he and Kosar went over game film in Berea recently and had regular phone talks during the 2005 season.

it would be nice the rival that was is no more and I would like nothin more then to see it come back...

No more? Come back?
From the Browns side of this, it never went away, and needs no coming back.
From your side though, I can kind of see where you are coming from as it has been pretty one-sided lately.
But once we spank your ass a couple of times this season, the hatred will come back...
