49ers ship Dorsey to Browns for veteran Dilfer

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- The San Francisco 49ers acquired a proven backup quarterback for Alex Smith, getting Trent Dilfer from the Cleveland Browns on Thursday in a trade for quarterback Ken Dorsey and an undisclosed 2007 draft pick.
Dilfer, who won a Super Bowl with Baltimore in 2001, will give the 49ers depth behind Smith, who struggled as a rookie last season after being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft.
"Trent was a player we had interest in last season," 49ers coach Mike Nolan said in a statement. "We were looking for a veteran quarterback with experience that could help mentor Alex Smith. Trent fits the bill on both counts and we are excited to have him with the 49ers."
Dilfer signed a four-year deal with the Browns last year after stints with the Baltimore Ravens and Seattle Seahawks. He went 4-7 as a Browns starter before losing the job to rookie Charlie Frye. Dilfer completed 59.8 percent of his passes last season for 2,321 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
"Trent Dilfer played an important role in the making over of our football team last year," Browns general manager Phil Savage said in a statement. "At this point, to add Ken Dorsey and to give Trent the opportunity to go back home to California is a win-win for all parties."
Dilfer, who played in college at Fresno State, has started 107 career games, throwing for 106 touchdowns and 117 interceptions. He made the Pro Bowl with Tampa Bay in 1997 after passing for 2,555 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Dorsey started 10 games in his three years in San Francisco, including three last season. He completed 48 of 90 passes for 481 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in 2005.
Cody Pickett is San Francisco's third-string quarterback and the team also drafted Michael Robinson in the fourth round last month. Robinson, a quarterback in college at Penn State, is expected to mostly be used as a running back, receiver or kick returner in San Francisco.

Browns trade Dilfer to 49ers

By Patrick McManamon

<!-- begin body-content -->Let the Charlie Frye era begin.
One year after bringing in Trent Dilfer and touting him as the best possible mentor for a young quarterback and following an offseason when coach Romeo Crennel said he didn't know who would start at quarterback, the Browns traded Dilfer to the San Francisco 49ers.
In a deal that was completed late Thursday, Dilfer was sent to the 49ers for a 2007 draft choice and quarterback Ken Dorsey, clearing the way for Frye to take over the quarterback spot.
Dorsey has three years experience in the league.
But it would not be surprising to see the Browns make another move at the position to add another veteran before training camp.
The Browns tried last weekend to acquire Joey Harrington and Marques Tuiasosopo.
What happened with Dilfer?
Anyone's guess. He declined to comment Thursday night.
When he came in, he was touted as a potential starter for four years by Savage, to the point that he was given an $8 million, four-year deal when he joined the Browns.
Dilfer played last season on a partially torn patella tendon and let slip occasional remarks that indicated he did not see eye to eye with offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon.
Dorsey, 25, has been with the 49ers for three years, throwing 316 passes with eight touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He was the quarterback for the University of Miami when Ohio State beat the Hurricanes to win the 2002 national title.
Undrafted free agents
Sixteen undrafted free agents will join the Browns' draftees this weekend for their rookie minicamp.
Among them: Charlton Keith, a defensive end in college who will move to linebacker.
Keith, who went to Buchtel High, was first-team All-Big 12 last season, when he had 61 tackles and nine sacks for Kansas. He is the cousin of Cavaliers guard Eric Snow.
Other undrafted free agents:
• Dustin Almond, who threw for a school-record 64 touchdowns and 7,342 yards at Southern Mississippi.
• Running back Chris Barclay, who left Wake Forest as its career leader in seven categories, including rushing yards (4,032).
• Lance Butler, a four-year starter at Florida at guard and tackle.
• Darrell Hackney of Alabama-Birmingham, who finished as Conference USA's fourth-leading career passer.
• Defensive back Dontez Sanders of Wisconsin, who attended Bedford Chanel.
• Wide receiver Steve Sanders of Bowling Green, a Cleveland native.
• Rob Smith of Tennessee, a co-captain who moved from guard to center.
• Punter Kyle Basler of Washington State, wide receiver Carlton Brewster of Ferris State, linebacker Kevin Culbert of Frostburg State, defensive back Charles Hall of Southeast Louisiana, defensive back Willie Hughley of Florida Atlantic, linebacker Ricardo Hurley of South Carolina, defensive back Dwayne Ijames of Elon University and wide receiver Brent Little of Southern Illinois.
The rookie minicamp will run today through Sunday and is not open to the public.

Brownies . . .
There is a possibility backup quarterback Trent Dilfer could be traded after all. He said this week he did not want to be traded, but the feeling coming from the team is he would like to be elsewhere.
The Browns and San Francisco 49ers have talked, but no deal had been completed as of late Thursday afternoon.

Browns send disgruntled Dilfer to San Francisco

Friday, May 05, 2006

Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter

With his wealth of NFL experience and willingness to share it, Trent Dilfer was supposed to be the ideal mentor to Charlie Frye. When he joined the Browns last year, Dilfer talked of making Frye better by competing with him before finishing his career in Cleveland.

But something went terribly awry at the end of last season, and now Dilfer is just another footnote in Browns history.

He was traded to the San Francisco 49ers Thursday night for an undisclosed 2007 draft choice and quarterback Ken Dorsey. The draft pick is lower than the fourth-round selection the Browns used to acquire Dilfer from Seattle in 2005.

Relations became so fractious between the Browns and Dilfer that the team decided to trade him without having a suitable replacement in hand. Dorsey, 25, was a throw-in who may or may not serve as Frye's top backup in 2006.

The Browns will take a $575,000 hit on their 2006 salary cap by trading Dilfer.

Dilfer was 4-7 as Browns starting quarterback last year before injuring the patellar tendon in a knee. A frosty relationship with offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon worsened, a source said, after Frye took over as the starter.

After the season, Dilfer confronted coach Romeo Crennel about his unhappiness with Carthon. Dilfer was told that Carthon was not going anywhere.

Dilfer's attitude should have set off fire alarms in Browns headquarters, but the team proceeded in the off-season as if there was no problem. In fact, Crennel consistently portrayed the competition between Frye and Dilfer as open and refused to name a starter, he claimed, because he didn't know which one deserved it.

As late as Sunday, the second day of the draft, when it was revealed that Browns General Manager Phil Savage tried to trade for Detroit's Joey Harrington, Crennel said that he expected Dilfer to attend the team's mandatory minicamp in June.

While Dilfer publicly claimed he was happy in Cleveland, he privately stewed and, according to a source, threatened to retire if the team didn't comply with his request to be traded to San Francisco.

In a prepared statement, Savage said, "Trent Dilfer played an important role in the making over of our football team last year. At this point, to add Ken Dorsey and to give Trent the opportunity to go back home to California is a win-win for all parties."

Here they come:

The Browns will have 51 players on hand for three days of rookie orientation camp, which begins today. Practices are not open to the public.

The rookie roster includes 10 draft picks, 16 undrafted free agents, 23 tryouts and two first-year players from their 2005 roster.

The undrafted free agents signed by the Browns are:

Quarterbacks Darrell Hackney of Alabama-Birmingham and Dustin Almond of Southern Mississippi; defensive backs Charles Hall of Southeastern Louisiana, Willie Hughley of Florida Atlantic, Dwayne Ijames of Elon and former Bedford resident Dontez Sanders of Wisconsin; offensive linemen Lance Butler of Florida and Rob Smith of Tennessee; linebackers Kevin Culbert of Frostburg State, Ricardo Hurley of South Carolina and Charlton Keith of Kansas; receivers Carlton Brewster of Ferris State, East High graduate Steve Sanders of Bowling Green and Brent Little of Southern Illinois; running back Chris Barclay of Wake Forest; and punter Kyle Basler of Washington State.

Ken Dorsey?!?!?! Real good.:roll1:

For as great of a track record as Savage has evaluating talent in general, he has just as bad a record when it comes to quarterbacks.

Not that this trade really means anything ... Dilfer SUCKED and Dorsey will SUCK, and Frye is going to have a real hard time because Carthon is terrible offensive coordinator. Hopefully, Carthon gets better this year, but I just don't see it. The sooner he's gone, the better. You can't honestly tell me that Dorsey as a #2 is any worse than Dilfer. Dilfer's only asset was his experience and knowledge of the game, and Carthon didn't let him take advantage of that.

In the end, I'll bet they bring in somebody else with experience to challange for a spot during camp.

I dont see why people rag on carthon as much as they do. we had a 1000 yard rusher and reciever last year, he will be ten times better this year with an offensive line to work with, i was amazed he did so much with what we had last year.

Dorsey's completed over 50% of the few passes that he's thrown in the NFL, and he has a 1.0 TD to Int ratio. He's not a great quarterback, or maybe not even a good quarterback, but he'll be an adequate quarterback to backup Frye. That's alot cheaper than a bench riding veteran that couldn't hit the broad side of a barn last year.
