Well if you say "i remember that"....you're not credible because you don't have a link. I don't agree with that.

Actually you would be completely credible, since you are the sole authority on your own memory. Just don't expect your memory alone to convince anyone else in an internet discussion.

No, everyone has their own credibility. If I say I talked to the pope, you could believe me or not. It would depend on how things I've claimed before panned out later. That is, if I have a history of being right about recruits coming to OSU, my credibility goes up. If I say "I heard A about Recruit X" I don't need a link, because I have my own credibility. I could STILL say that, even today, with virtually NO recruiting credibility. If I did, people would want me to back up what I said with something... why? I have NO credibility when it comes to recruting. Even though, I might be correct in what I assert.

Credibility is about "support" (or, not support, as it may turn out) for a position. Nothing more nothing less. It doesn't have anything to do with "making anything official"
I know credibility doesn't have anything to do with making something official. But if there's a link about something then people are going to believe it more than if there isn't. More often then not, that's a good thing. But there are cases where demanding a link isn't right.

Providing a link from lebron that says "I would've gone to OSU" is misleading. when did he say that? 3 weeks ago? then he's biased based on his favorite school and the fact that they're good now. (and that they're wearing his name on their jerseys).

All I'm saying is that in this isolated incident, asking for links as proof is pointless. He could say 100 different things to 100 different reporters, but as long as only 1 of them wrote it down and made a link for everybody to see, then people will just use that one as the official word.

but the recruiting thing can be proven. this can't. so why ask for a link?

this is an isolated incident where asking for a link doesn't make sense. there are others. recruiting information isn't one of them.

Exactly. Your memory is support for a "fact" Who cares about "proof?"

I mean hells bells... there's so many links in the poli board supporting this or that, and hardly anyone on the other side of an issue is swayed just cause there's a link. It comes down to sources.. always. And that's all a link is... a source. (as is memory, I might add).

Well, again, I don't understand how or why this all began, wasn't part of the original thread.

Anyway, I still don't see how asking for a link is an issue in this case. I mean, if LaBron said such a thing, someone would likely report it. And, besides, if someone says "link?" to me, and I don't have one, it's no big deal to me to say, "I don't have one. Thought I heard him say that once" and be done with it.

I never said linking is a bad thing. It's just pointless to ask for one about Lebron and where he would go to college. What was that...3 years ago?.

No. You said:
I don't understand the universal message board cry for "sources" and "links". As if everything ever said is linked.....and that makes it official.
The word "universal" usually does not refer to a single example such as your Lebron James discussion. My response addressed your evaluation of the "universal" (as in widespread, common, etc) practice of linking to support one's position.

universal refers to the fact that on every message board, when something is said, a link is demanded right after. more often than not, that's a good thing. in this case it isn't.
