Cincinnati Reds 2023 (sell the team Bob)

The hero is a different guy day after day. Eclipsing the BRM in obscure stats that they never would have told us about in the 70s (*today's was consecutive games with at least one h.r. I think). It's an electric time for Reds fans.
* - I mean they still have one game to go to tie the record, but that wasn't set by the BRM.

Was watching MLB Tonight and they were talking about potential trade destinations for Shohei Ohtani since the Angels are imploding. They made the argument for the Reds trading Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Noelvi Marte to rent Ohtani for the last few months of the season to push for a playoff spot. The Reds do have a bevy of high end infield prospect talent and they could conceivably swing this deal without hurting their long term outlook. Would you make this deal if you were the Reds knowing it would be just for the rest of the season? I think I would look into it and see about pulling it off. Who knows? They have already caught lightning in a bottle with these youngsters, maybe they could turn it into a full fledged storm.

It’s an interesting topic but there is no way I pay that price for a rental. We could still move people around and get those guys in the lineup o we the next couple of years and sustain the success.

We could trade them Votto and then both contracts would be off the books at the end of the year and some prospects that aren't CES, EDLC, HG or Matt Mclain. That group is what you build on and Ohtani leaving immediately after is a stinger. Now if we did a sign and trade kind of thing...

I like the idea of getting a bad contract of the books in exchange for getting better prospects. And I understand you don’t want to mortgage your future by trading for a two month rental especially when you are a year or two ahead of schedule, but there is something very intriguing in getting a generational talent like Ohtani for a couple months in his prime and see what happens.

If you are looking at scenarios to take bad contracts off of other teams hands to lighten the prospect cost then look at teams like San Diego and the Mets when they finally tap out.

You could take Blake Snell, Hader and Soto off San Diego’s hands for the pro rated ~$40MM or so and help keep them out of luxury tax. One would think that would lighten the return on prospects considerably.
