Saw this on Twitter and can’t really believe it.
Everyone knows I’m a Sidewalk Reds Fan and I pull for the Braves first. But IF this is true, it tells me one of three things:
1). The Reds management is very serious about locking down De La Cruz, Steers and McClain and others and believe they can replace India cheaply with talent at the farm or in free agency. They view the extensions of those three more pressing than India’s.
2). The farm system is so talent deprived of pitching prospects that this is simply the best move to address this deficiency moving forward.
3). A division title might be nice in 2023, but the real prizes are in 24, 25 and 26. It’s time to prepare for that now.
Idk, maybe all three are true.
#2 is far from the case. The pitching depth in the system is about a year behind all of these position guys but then again, they are mostly a year early.
#3 yes, they are (seemingly) trying to build a consistent winner and have accomplished the first, big step in creating a solid core of young talent.
As far as India goes, he's ARB1 eligible next year. McClain is 3 years away from that and a better player. Every team with a brain is going to look to replace older, less productive and more expensive with younger, cheaper and better. That isn't to say India is a bad player, it's just a sign that the Reds are getting better.
Herbie's vagina will be clenched like a fist over this but that should tell people it's a smart move.
